Has anyone tried stemetil/ prochlorperazine to help with morning sickness? I was shocked to read that its used as an anti-psychotic and am a bit concerned about risks to baby tho i've been assured by my doc it's totally safe... Help!

How sick are you? It will probably go by about 16 weeks. I am also bad at the moment but am choosing puking over the worry about what effect the drugs could have.

Yes I took stemetil. But I took the tiny dose that you dissolve on you gums so more effective and less in your body overall.

I've taken them for two pregnancies.

You might want to try Zantac too as I was choking and throwing up on my stomach acid too!

There is a wierd relationship with the culture you are in and morning sickness with some suggestion that in higher anxiety cultures there are higher incidents.

That is wh anti-psychotic can work.

I took Stemetil from 8w until the day I went into labour (the sickness went at around 24w, the nausea stayed till the end) and I couldn't have coped without it. DD is now 4mo and fine.

I saw several different docs throughout my pg, as I moved, and all of them were very happy to prescribe it to me. As far as I am aware - I'm not a medical specialist, obviously Grin - it is safe to use in pregnancy and is one of the standard anti-emetics prescribed.

I had Avomine, it's a travel sickness pill. Made me sleepy though so I could only take it at tea-time. Couldn't work or drive while on it either.

starlight that's interesting about the anxiety part, XP was being a shit in the early days of that pregnancy. Not that I've ever been relaxed TBH.

I have had every anti-sickness drug going, including Stemitil, in both pg, and both children are fine. I have dissolved stemitil on my gums, had cyclizine by drip and every other method of administration of every other drug (Odansestron, Avomine, Phenergan). The biggest help was time and rest.

Ok thanx all. Grinning and bearing it for the time being but this hot weather is actually making it worse!

I've taken that med too, and I've had Cyclizine in a drip after being hospitalised at 9 weeks for hyperemesis. Have now been taking oral cyclizine from 10 weeks pregnant-present (am 26 weeks) as I'm still sick.

Not fun at all, but my doctor told me that taking these meds has less risk than being dehydrated, ill and vomiting all the time.

Also, the doctor told me that it is used as an anti-psychotic drug as it works on a similar part of the brain. Morning sickness is vomiting, but it isn't the same sort of vomiting caused by bugs or tummy upsets. Rather it is partly a mental thing and thus can be treated with meds usually used for psychological issues. Not sure if that makes sense, but hope it does :)
