Have really sore dry lips and am drinking lots and lots of water now so cannot be due to dehydration - think must be the heating and winter etc. Anyone got any suggestions as to what products are best to use - is vaseline (petroleum jelly) in those little lip therapy tins safe to use?

What do you mean by safe to use?

Vaseline is vaseline whatever container its in. I find its the best thing for dry lips.

Drink plenty of fluids.

Avoid wetting lips with your tongue which increases dryness.

Avoid petroleum based lip balms such as Vaseline as they are drying.

Use hydrous lanolin, cocoa butter, vegetable oil based products or aloe vera. Cracks at the corners of your mouth may be infections, alert your doctor to see if you need medication.

Just know you have to be careful with some products whilst pregnant and was wondering if anyone had any recommendations.

Do you know any specific products mothernature? Most lip balms seem to be petroleum based that I have had in the past.

vaseline is perfectly safe for use during pg. And personally i do not find it drying at all.

Carmex lip balm pot
Helps to provide relief of the symptoms of cold sores and dry chapped lips. Carmex contains camphor and menthol. These ingredients give Carmex a cooling effect and help relieve itching of rough, chapped lips.

Available from Bare Beauty @ London Price: £2.25

Thanks everyone - will go and hunt for something - have only got vaseline lip therapy at home and chapstick which contains petroleum - have been using these though - do you think it will have caused any harm?

i would use a toothbrush or a muslin cloth every day to slough off the dead dry skins sounds horrible but does not hurt I do it every day and it is better than using creams...

MrsBadger · 19/02/2006 16:23

Second vote for Blisteze (now marketed as Blistex Relief Cream - red, white and blue packaging) - every hour or as often as you remember. Smell's a bit... penetrating but really does the job.

Have battled with dry lips all my life but I have been using Essential Care Lip Slik for over a year now and it's lovely and has been given lots of good press. Check out their website www.essential-care.co.uk (no I don't work for them!!)
