Do you eat ground beef and burgers?

I really want a burger but have developed a fear of red meat during pregnancy (which I need to get over!) is it best to avoid ground beef and burgers though? I'm thinking cooked at home, good quality burger rather than fast food.

As long as they're cooked properly why would you avoid mince or burgers? Confused

A nice big home made burger has loads of red meat in it, the iron will probably do you good. Of course you want things cooked properly, but no reason why a burger can't fall into that category. And it makes sense to avoid takeaway burgers even when you're not pregnant!

why afraid of red meat- is it the toxoplasmosis thing ( easily avoided by cooking thoroughly), just curious as I have had an attraction to red meat this pregnancy and early on ate Bolognese 3 times a week!

Whysoserious · 21/05/2012 19:24

Yeah it's the toxoplasmosis thing Blush

It's not a home made burger- tesco finest so hopefully that'll be ok. My body def needs iron!!

I do. I grind my own meat or I ask the butcher to grind it in front of me.
Re. toxoplasmosis, ground meat isn't more dangerous than any other meat. The main risk, if you buy ready-made mince or burgers, is e. coli.

Whysoserious · 21/05/2012 19:57

So my tesco finest could be harbouring e.coli?

Why is it a risk in ready-made burgers?

If it's properly cooked then there's no reason to avoid either.

Just had one for dinner so do hope it's ok! If it's well cooked I can't imagine why it wouldn't be ok.

It was delicious, too!

Ecoli is often present in animal poo, so there's a risk of it getting into the meat during the slaughtering process.

Thorough cooking kills ecoli.

I ate plenty of meals made with ground meat when pregnant, but made sure all meat was cooked thoroughly. I didn't eat any burgers from takeaways just in case.
