Peanuts? Chorizo?

Okay, so someone has just told me that these two things are not allowed...which are regular parts of my diet.
I have peanut butter or crunchy nut cornflakes every day. And I love my tapas....

I'm 14 weeks now.....eeessshh worried......

It used to be advised not to eat peanuts if you had a family history of allergies, but the advice changed on that in 2009.

Not sure about chorizo, I think you are supposed to be wary of cured meats. However I had chorizo and salami with my lunch today.

Check out the Food standard's agency website, they have the most up to date information.

batteryhen · 20/05/2012 20:19

I eat all of the above :) Usually chorizo is cooked and in pasta, but I just go ahead and munch away :)

Rowanhart · 20/05/2012 20:21

Hi battery hen. Same I have chorizo cooked in pasta.

And thanks for the peanut advice blacteapkease.

Happy now! :-)

If it was cooked then I am sure there was no problem at all.

monkeymoma · 20/05/2012 20:26

I think the peanut thing is outdated
I'm eating all nuts anyway, they're a massive part of my diet

xkcdfangirl · 20/05/2012 20:32

I ate all nuts including peanuts throughout pregnancy with no ill effect.

They used to think that eating nuts when pregnant caused nut allergies, so they advised pg women to avoid them, and nut allergies went UP massively, so they stopped advising that.

They are now doing research to find out whether eating nuts in pg actually protects against nut allergies, or whether it has no effect, so there's no official advice either way. I decided to eat nuts throughout as they are an important source of protein in my vegetarian diet, and I felt the loss of protien would be a more important issue than the uncertain effects on allergies.

I have no knowledge of the chorizo issue.

I had chorizo in pasta last week.

My SIL was shocked that I ate poppyseed bread during my pregnancy with DS because apparently it gives the baby an opium addiction :o

Rowanhart · 20/05/2012 20:43

Haha. Opium addiction comment wins craziest food comment from nosy Parker concerned loved one.....

We were pg at the same time and she is ultra competitive so I'm not sure whether she actually thinks that or she just wanted to make me feel bad. If it's the first then :o, if the second then it didn't work...

abbypumpkin · 20/05/2012 22:55

Yes new rules are peanuts fine as long as you don't have a problem yourself (obviously), now thought to reduce risk of baby having allergy.
Supposed to avoid any non-cooked, cured, smoked meat such as salami, Parma ham. If you cook it then there's no problem

sdaisy26 · 20/05/2012 23:15

The rules on chorizo, salami etc. have recently changed so even that's ok now apparently. The NHS site has all the info:

www.nhs.uk/conditions/pregnancy-and-baby/pages/foods-to-avoid-pregnant.aspx#close

EggsMichelle · 21/05/2012 07:53

Mmm... Peanut butter! It goes everywhere in my handbag!

milk · 21/05/2012 08:39

With DS I ate peanuts all through pregnancy, and now he loves peanut butter :D

I never listen to food advice!

Longtalljosie · 21/05/2012 12:50

If you look at the food advice you'll see the advice on peanuts has now changed - so that's fine. Some meats (eg Parma ham) tend to be avoided as they're raw - but if you cook them that's the problem solved...

lostlenore · 21/05/2012 12:56

I have GD and carbs send my glucose through the roof in the morning, so I have salami, parma ham etc and cheese (the kind with holes in it). I have also eaten mussels, runny eggs and rare steak. Eat what you enjoy, just trust your instincts and make sure the source is good.

bettybat · 21/05/2012 12:58

Peanuts aren't even nuts, they're legumes, so the nut allergy care-mongering is completely disingenuous.

Someone at work saw my eating a Snickers bar the other day, and launched into a diatribe at me about causing eczema in my unborn child. I'm really clued up about my diet, did a lot of research, and made informed decisions about what I was eating so I politely explained this. Then she said, "Oh well I suppose I was just as bad, I smoked all the way through my pregnancy".

Hmm

I don't even know what I'm more shocked at - her admitting to smoking, or the implication me eating a Snickers bar is just as bad!

minipie · 21/05/2012 13:30

sdaisy thanks so much for that link - I hadn't seen the new NHS guidance on salami, am very glad to know it's back on the menu!!

halfdoneharris · 21/05/2012 13:52

So we can eat salami and chorizo now? Yippee - I have been cutting it out from my diet but I love to eat it. I may even run down to Sainsburys now to stock up Smile

peterpie · 21/05/2012 16:46

I realise a lot of the food advice given in pregnancy is country specific. I live in Spain and was told by my Gynae here definitely NOT to eat chorizo, jamón Serrano etc unless it was cooked. However, here they don´t bother about paté, runny eggs or certain cheeses as they do in the UK (although this may have changed in the past few years)
