What I will need?

I am sure this has been done to death but does anyone have a list of what I will need for baby?

I am only 5 weeks with my first but I am a control freak and want to research how much I need to save for what is required!

Also, I am more than a little excited and this gives me some baby related focus that doesn't involve telling anyone!

Many TIA.

Congratulations!!! I'm afraid I am still trying to work out what I should be buying, but a lot of the ladies have very practical shopping list, and you will be surprised how much of the stuff you thought you needed you wont need at all!

A mode of travel

Sling
Or
Pushchair
Carseat if u have a car
Changing bag. Rucksack or cheap record bag will do

Clothing
I'd say enough vests for 2 a day
8-10 baby grows (you'll be given loads)
Couple of cardis
Couple of hats

Sleeping
If not co sleeping a Moses basket & stand but if you've got a carrycot with your pram just use that
Couple of mattress covers (pillowcases for emergency)
Few cellular blankets
Cotbed etc can wait Cos chances are they won't be in it for ages

Feeding
Bf you'll just need lanisoh cream & pads
Maybe a good pillow to take some support
Ff I can't comment on

Cleaning
We got a baby bath cos we don't have a bath
Lots n lots of cotton wool
Muslin (supeised how much I use it)
Washable nappies, liners and bin or disposables n nappy sack

There are loads of other things. But I'd call that the essentials

The above is a great list. I would just add a boucny chair. DS spent ages in his until he could sit on his own. The cheap ones are as good, if not better in my opinion, than expensive ones.

We never had a baby bath but did have a little towling support thing for the big bath which was really helpful.

Don't buy loads of blankets, you will be given LOADS. If you want to stick to cellular blankets buy 2 tops as you might find you want to use sleeping bags fairly quickly. They are super fab for wriggly babies who kick blankets off then wake because they're cold like my DS!

Babies will have no need for toys for quite some time so wait and see what ou get given first.

I'd definitely agree with FloweryBoots that a little bouncy chair is an absolutely brilliant help when you need to pop the little one down safely to do something, and the sleeping bags are brilliant as they stop them kicking off, or wriggling under, blankets.

It may also be worth getting a couple of nipple shields in case you find BF a bit sore or uncomfortable. They really helped me get through the "getting used to it" bit - although you may not need them at all! (Some people don't like/approve of them at all but I used them for a while.)

And I needed a lot more bibs than I thought I would, so maybe get about 20 now and you will be able to use them for months!

melliebobs · 21/05/2012 10:36

Oh god yes BIBS I though I'm bf won't really need any. But dd is a right dribble eater and brings up mouthfuls of sick on EVERY bloody burp. We go through at least 3 bibs a day

Thanks ladies, I'll start my spreadsheet at lunchtime.

Although, there may be some googling required....ehm, cellular blankets?

You need a cpuple of lists, the latter maybe a subset of the first one :)

I too love lists.

nursery items
labour/hospital/ baby bags

Cellular blankets are great, got holes in but trap the warmth really well - I got 2 small ones for our crib and 1 large cotbed size and we still use them now for my 3yo. Mainly for playing with dollies - but still got monies worth
