Glamping whilst pregnant

Just a wwyd really. One of my friends is getting married this year (incidentally 2 weeks before my due date!) & she wants us all to go Glamping for her hen party. I'll be around the 30 week mark at the time (20 weeks now) & I also hav a slipped disc. I've read up on what glamping involves & th whole proper bed & toilet thing is obviously far bette than normal camping. Think I'm jus a bi concerned with the fact that we're gong to be in the middle of nowhere - everyone else will be drinking so there's no possibility of being able to get to a hospital shoud "anything happen" (not sure what I'm thinking could happen!) - I can't drive btw. So, advice please! Am I just being a worry head over nothing?!

I'll be 34+4 weeks when I go to Green Man Festival, we will be taking the caravan and I do camping a lot. Also we will be in the Breacon Beacons and there are medical facilities available. I also don't have a slipped disc.

IMO pregnancy wise the chance of you needing emergency care are quite small, but I'd still want to know I could get to a hospital if I had to. How far away is the nearest one?

I'd be more concerned about how physically hard you will find it, especially if you don't camp regularly. I went on a hen party last week @ 20 weeks and left at 1am feeling very tired and achey from sitting in a horrible chair!

Can you convince your friend to have a hen meal the week before or something so you can go to that and skip the glamping?

PollyIndia · 20/05/2012 18:05

Ah, shouldIbecrossaboutthis, I too will be 34 weeks at green man festival! How funny!! What is your due date?

I'm not sure I'd go camping or glamping heavily pregnant on a hen weekend either.. it's just the fact everyone would be pissed but me and not having access to medical care if I needed it. Plus the slipped disc and not being able to drive... I just think there are too many variables.

The meal is a good idea.

I am 28 weeks and have enough trouble getting comfy in my bed with memory foam mattress at night so I would be wary about sleeping in a camp bed when 30 weeks. Also, my toilet breaks are fairly regular and I wouldn't like to have to walk to find toilets in the middle of the night. Also, if you do decide that you are tired and want to go to bed, I imagine it will be noisy.

I wouldn't go personally but I am a bad sleeper though and pregnancy makes it worse.

Pollyindia, how weird!! I'm due Sep 24th with a little boy. How about you?!

Are you camping or in a campervan? I plan to sit on my bum for the entire festival, really hoping the weather is dry!

I'd go, but then I went camping (airbed, campsite loos) when I was 37 weeks. Admittedly DH was with me, and was sober enough to drive at all times, and we were with friends who could have looked after DD1 and DD2 if necessary. I went to Egypt at 27 weeks - decided to opt out of camel riding, but could manage everything else.

If 'something happens' at 30 weeks it may well be an emergency, so need an ambulance anyway (and is very unlikely). As already asked - how far are you from the nearest hospital? Is everyone else definitely planning to get drunk? On most hen parties I've been on there have been people not drinking, for a variety of reasons.

Check how 'middle of nowhere' you'll be. Some seemingly remote places have hospitals close by, quicker to get to than getting across a busy town in rush hour.

Could you join them for a day? Have a weekend away with DP or friend, based nearby, where you join the hens just for a day?

Look into it all (which you are doing) - and if, all things considered, you'd spend the hen party, and the weeks before, worrying, it may be best not to go.

ShouldIbecross I am due 27th! Don't know the sex.
I was going to camp backstage, but I think we are going to get a B&B. Just think camping anywhere could be uncomfortable and I might just want to get away and have a proper rest before going back into the fray. I'm hoping I'll have enough energy to see some bands. Its my first baby, so NO idea what I'll feel like by then. Everyone I know who has had kids says no way will I want to be at a festival!! I think I'll have to carry my own chair around with me. It'll be a very different festival experience from my normal one. I think green man is a good one for a preggers person though isn't it? It's not like it's glasto eg - way too much walking there for an 8 month pregnant lady.
Also hoping it's dry. It's always much harder in the wet, especially when you don't have alcohol to create internal heating!

Thanks guys, good to know I'm not being paranoid over nothing! At the moment I don't know where we will be going, but once I do I think I'll need to do a bit of investigating! Good luck with all your camping ladies!

You could see if there's a B&B nearby (and some campsites offer this in the farmhouse).

milliemorgs · 20/05/2012 19:49

I think glamping should be fine. The fact that you're asking tells me you really want to go...so go!! I'd love to do this if I get the opportunity before baby arrives...though not sure what DH would think about it lol. Enjoy whatever you decide to do! :)

sharonhall · 21/05/2012 15:17

Glamping is great fun! I am 16 weeks and that will be my summer holiday this year!!
Everything will be fine! Don't stress yourself out with worry! :)

ColumboIsMyHero · 21/05/2012 20:32

Glamping, pah! Did a festival at 35 weeks (and huge) with SPD and a toddler to look after and it was totally fine. I'd hate a hen do - but I hate all hen dos. Get details of local hospital for your own reassurance, take your notes and make sure that whatever bedding you've got will cover you. I had a comedy moment trying to fit my enormous beautiful bump into a sleeping bag.

applecrumple · 21/05/2012 20:35

Just out of interest sharon, where are you going glamping? Made me smile about the sleeping bag columbo!

Cornwall! :) beautiful place x x

lamby79 · 21/05/2012 21:38

I recently went to my friends 'glamping' hen do at 32 weeks and although I was knackered for a week after I was really glad I went! When I was pregnant with DD I missed my best friend's hen do and always regretted it! It will probably be the last time for a while you'll get to do something with all your friends! Perhaps get a number for a local taxi / hospital just in case but there are few places too far from the emergency services these days. I went to Love Lane on the Lizard in Cornwall :)

ColumboIsMyHero · 21/05/2012 21:44

I was , literally, rolling on the floor laughing like a huge snake that had swallowed a baby elephant.

Turns out DD was over 10lb, so not a million miles off.
