Where on god's green earth can I buy a reasonably priced maternity dressing gown?

Mothercare have 2 - both out of stock

Everywhere else seem to either be hideous (why would I want a dressing gown that didn't quite meet in the middle Mamas and Papas) or hideously expensive? (realistically I'm going to be wearing it for 3 months tops)

Would like a nice lightweight jersey one if poss as will be end if June/ July when I go into hospital and it's always baking in there anyway.

Cheers

Seriously?

heliumballoon · 19/05/2012 22:28

Genuine question- why do you need one? If your nightie is quite modest then you're ok in hospital, then at home you'll be back in your normal dressing gown, no?

lindsell · 19/05/2012 22:28

Have you tried eBay? Usually lots of maternity stuff available

trixymalixy · 19/05/2012 22:32

Just buy one a couple of sizes bigger than your normal size, I don't get why you would need a specific maternity one.

QuickQuickSloe · 19/05/2012 22:33

I bought a lovely white cotton one in Primark last year (also had a summer baby) for seven pounds. It wasn't maternity but I just bought it in a really big size. I found it really useful as a cover up in hospital and for the first couple of weeks at home. My nighties were drop down ones for BFing and I felt quite exposed in them.

misslinnet · 19/05/2012 23:26

I just bought a normal dressing gown that was a bigger size than normal.

SilverSage · 20/05/2012 10:00

I'm 37 weeks, and have just bought one from M&S to go in my hospital bag, mainly because the one I have is too hot to wear in hospital. They have some nice light, 100% cotton "waffle" ones at the moment that are very reasonably priced, and I only had to go up one size from normal.

Alligatorpie · 20/05/2012 10:10

I think I have the same £7 one from Primark. I tried it on today and thought "what a bargain " I bought 3 sizes bigger than I am and at 36 I can tie it with lots of room. Plus, I can bleach it if i need to.

This is not something I would pay maternity prices for.

TessTosterone · 20/05/2012 12:02

As above just buy cheap summer one in a bigger size?

ellesbell · 20/05/2012 12:05

I rate the cotton waffle ones in M&S also. I have a huge bump and still managed to get away with buying my normal size, so it'll do for after the baby too.

dontlaugh · 20/05/2012 12:05

Primark one a few sizes bigger. I still wear mine. Definitely not up there with the investment buys, save your money for the things that are worth it.

Enfyshedd · 20/05/2012 12:06

I've got the £7 white cotton waffle dressing gown from Primark as well. I think the biggest size they do is 20-22? I'm normally a 16 and got the 16-18 - it was fitting fine over/around bump when I packed it in my case a few weeks ago (am 39 weeks today!)

newtonupontheheath · 20/05/2012 14:12

I have one from matalan from my last pregnancy that I'll be using again this time. My favourite post-birth outfit was nursing croptop/sleeping bra + matalan £3 shorts (lots of dark colours!) + said dressing gown which was about £10 max.

littlemissnormal · 20/05/2012 15:01

Mine is from sainsburys. Make sure it is light though as I found the hospital really really warm.

Catsycat · 20/05/2012 15:13

I bought a lovely jersey one from Sainsbury's in an XL for about £16. It fits fine at 39 weeks.

In answer to why someone would want a dressing gown, I'll be in hospital for a couple of days for an ELCS (tomorrow). I want one for going to and from the hospital bathroom / toilet / day room. I don't want people to see my nipples sticking out through my nightie (even though it is extremely frumpy modest), or have my G cup boobs wobbling about in front of all the other people's DH's if I get put on a ward!!!!

I agree with MooBaaWoofCheep

With DS I took this one to the hospital... www.johnlewis.com/4929/Product.aspx in a large :)

Florin · 20/05/2012 15:29

I have just borrowed my husbands light weight summer dressing gown. Can't be bothered to buy something special

Snowboarder · 20/05/2012 16:07

Thanks all!

Yes, it was a serious question Confused My life hasn't yet become that boring tha I have to start fake threads about dressing gowns to spice things up a bit Grin

I already have a dressing gown but it is one of those fairly warm super soft things and is quite short too - not appropriate for a roasting hot hospital maternity ward.

I should have said that I am going in for c-section so likely to be in a couple of days at least. There's also a string chance that baby might be early (DS was 3 months prem) so I could end up spending a week or so in hospital.

I always assumed a proper maternity dressing gown would just fit better and be a bit more comfy generally but glad to hear that this isn't the case. I'll get myself to Primark this week and see if I can pick up a lightweight cheapy.

I did pop into Mothercare earlier and buy some lovely maternity pj's to wear until the birth and afterwards in hospital as I was so fed up of slipping around in baggy bottoms and DH's t-shirt. These but in black with tiny White polkadots if anyone's interested. They fit really nice and look cute not frumpy which is a rare thing in maternity wear I've found!

A string chance - jeeze! Sorry for appalling spelling, grammar and whatever else, damn iPad.

They are gorgeous Snowboarder I am due the same time and have the dressing gown dilemma also.

People have told me to go for dark colours and I spotted these PJ's from Tesco, outrageous price though, but nice PJ's, won't show stains! PJs

scarletforya · 20/05/2012 17:32

Oh, I've just seen the Mothercare ones come in black!

startail · 20/05/2012 17:46

DH snuggled DD up in my dressing gown after she was born, don't think I wore it. Far to hot. Changed into leggings and a top ASAP because I felt stupid in nightshirt in front of everyone's visitors.
