Would you eat a McFlurry whilst pregnant?

I know I am supposed to avoid whippy ice-cream because of the risk of Listeria. However, I'm thinking it's more of a risk from an ice-cream man who doesn't clean his equipment thoroughly. Surely McDonald's is very concerned with health and hygiene so their McFlurrys should be ok to eat in pregnancy surely? What do you all think?

I wouldn't eat one ever, pregnant or otherwise. If you want ice cream, why not buy a nice one.

sillymillyb · 19/05/2012 13:33

I ate them.... It didn't even occur to me not to! But then I ate runny eggs and had the occasional wine too so I wasn't hardcore avoiding anything :)

Going by the rules you shouldn't really. I avoided them the last two times but have given in and had a couple this timeBlush

savoycabbage · 19/05/2012 13:37

No.

McKayz · 19/05/2012 13:39

I haven't had them. I have been dying for one but decided to avoid them.

TheHouseofMirth · 19/05/2012 13:41

McDonalds much better than icecream man. I know someone who works for Carpigiani, the equipment manufacturer and you are right about the scrupulous hygiene. Also, I was shocked to discover that it is real ice cream i.e made on premises from milk, cream etc. I always assumed it was some reconstituted crap!

RubberBandit · 19/05/2012 13:45

Wouldn't occur to me not to eat it. Although I haven't actually had a McFlurry whilst pg but have eaten shitloads of cake batter containing raw eggs

IHaveAFeatureWallAndILikeIt · 19/05/2012 13:48

No, I didn't eat icecream from machines. If I wanted a soft icecream I got one of those whippy cornettos. I just don't didn't trust that the machines had been cleaned properly.

LadyBabsFlashesHerFanjo · 19/05/2012 13:53

I ate them Blush didn't occur to me not to

Flightty · 19/05/2012 13:54

Well I'd not normally eat one but I don't see a problem...I'd no idea it was a risk. I only knew about brie and shark HmmGrin

There goes my Wednesday night shark supper club

Having consumed an entire Sara Lee Pavlova within the past 24 hours all by myself, I have no standards though

ItsMyLastOne · 19/05/2012 14:49

I'd avoid it, but mainly for it being disgusting!

I travel through henley-in-Arden every week and really want to stop at the Henley ice cream place. Their ice cream is luverly. I might just have to stop tomorrow now you've made me think so much about ice cream!

Loonybun · 19/05/2012 14:58

I ate one from the mcdonalds in rome :) on honeymoon at 25 weeks preg... Didn't even occur to me not to!! Was lovely :)

DaisyMaisyJessicaEmily · 19/05/2012 15:01

www.nhs.uk/chq/Pages/917.aspx?CategoryID=54&SubCategoryID=130#close I't snot on the list so therefore I would yes.

ItWasThePenguins · 19/05/2012 15:07

Why not? It wouldn't even occur to me not to. I eat everything i do normally, with the exception of roule which is the only cheese i eat (it's a bit soft).

McKayz · 19/05/2012 15:09

I can't believe the nhs website says its ok and my MW said no!! That's so unfair!

Sarahmarie2505 · 19/05/2012 15:09

I wouldn't I got seriously I'll from a Mcflurry once and my GP contacted environmental health never had one since !

CupOfBrownJoy · 19/05/2012 15:22

The only thing my gynae told me avoid were raw meat and eggs.

So if they weren't revolting, I would probably eat one without thinking about it.

ItsMyLastOne · 19/05/2012 15:29

I had my booking in apt on Thursday and she specifically said no mr whippy, no mcflurry, no crushems (KFC or burger king I think - I can't remember) as they all use unpasteurised milk. Also she said no goats or sheeps milk as that's not pasteurised either.

seeker · 19/05/2012 15:33

Well, my ds- currently a hale and hearty 11 year old readin Match magazine next to me was practically made of Crunchie McFlurrries - they were my only craving. But I didn't realise til reading this thread that I wasn't supposed to eat them!

GoldenGreen · 19/05/2012 15:40

Never seen soft ice cream on any "official" list

McKayz · 19/05/2012 15:42

I was told with DS1 not to eat it and he's 5 now so it isn't a very new thing.

GoldenGreen · 19/05/2012 15:43

Oh, and yes I would. And did, lots!

Am doubtful about that advice, Itsmylastone - might try and find out if that's true as I would think they would warn you if so as presumably elderly people and children would also be advised against eating those products?

Floggingmolly · 19/05/2012 15:44

I sincerely doubt they're made from unpasturiesed milk Itsmylastone
Anyone using this in their products is required by law to display the fact very prominently.

Don't believe everything midwives tell you!

Elpis · 19/05/2012 15:53

I'm afraid that ever since my booking-in for this second pregnancy, when I told the MW I was still breastfeeding (DD was nearly three) and she asked, alarmed, if I'd started her on solids, I don't have a lot of faith in midwives. Never seen the same one twice and sometimes that's been a relief. The one I had sitting with me during my failure to progress was very kind, though.

I licked some of DD's Mr Whippy last Sunday without thinking about it. On the other hand, I won't touch liver or Brie. Never liked either.
