Does this sound like SPD?

Only 16 weeks but for the past week I've been getting and ache in my groin (inside my left thigh at the very top of my leg, next to my lady bits). It's not agony but certainly umcomfortable and it's there when I walk or get up out of a seat etc. it feels almost like a pulled muscle. I also feel a pressure at times in my pubic bone.
It gets worse as the day goes on.

I also get some similar pains in my lower back near the pelvic bones.

When I google this it says SPD. What do you reckon?

This is the second thread I've started today! Definitely valuing the mumsnet pearls of wisdom today Wink

Sounds like it could be. I have SPD but also have hypermobility so Im not sure what SPD on its own would feel like but you certainly describe similar to me.

Ask your doctor to refer you to a physio asap.

Also keep your knees together when getting in and out of the car and try to avoid any side steps or lunge type steps in the mean time.

Hope that helps :)

yes it does
that pain on standing up -I remember it well but not very fondly

get yourself to the GPs and ask for a refferal -physio really makes a difference so get in early

It sounds like it could be, but at 16 weeks you body is also pulling in all sorts of directions moving and growing to make room for baby. I'd suggest it to your gp or midwife for diagnosis, and if they confirm ask for physio referral as soon as they can. SPD can be hugely debilitating and very painful so early treatment is essential if that is what you have. I'm on my 3rd pregnancy with SPD now Sad and already at 12 weeks unable to walk more than 10/15 minutes without being in agony.

Thanks for your advice ladies. I actually went to the GP yesterday, mainly about the fact that I'd been potentially exposed to the Slapped Cheek virus (oh the joys of being pregnant) and was having to concentrate on pushing for a blood test for that, which I got. I mentioned this to him and he did say it sounds like SPD but that, at 16 weeks, I was too early to get it which I suspect is probably nonsense after reading some of the threads on here.

I've just had the worst night's sleep due to achey hips and thighs (which I don't think is anything to do with SPD) and getting up to go to the loo. The groin pain was particularly noticeable in the night when I got up and also when I was turning over (as I think someone mentioned upthread, I'm sorry I can't check the name as on phone) which happened a lot due to the achey leg syndrome.

Did you ladies find that it started off bearable and got worse? And how early did you start to get it?

Mine most certainly started as early as 16 weeks though it did progressively get worse as time went on. At that stage I could still walk and stand it would be my days after I had been at work which were the most painful. By the end it was quite painful and after the birth I couldn't walk properly for a good few weeks. Interestingly I never suffered from it during my first pregnancy.

I was never offer physio but I know to push for it if there ever is a 'next time'! As for sleeping try putting a pillow between your legs. Hope it eases for you soon!

I started with my spd at about 19 weeks and by 20 weeks it had hit me hard! So had the crutches! So word of advise, if you do have crutches, use both, not one like I did and now have a rotated pelvis!! My son is nearly one and I'm still under physios and skelletomuscular therapists to try and rectify it!! Hope it's not though!! But if it is, gentle exercise to keep it moving and mobile helped a lot, on days where I sat a lot (mainly due to grade 4 pp) the next day I was wheelchair bound! To be honest, think it was a godsend for me as I would of never rested with pp!

Mine started at 16 weeks and I put up with it as the 'aches and pains of pregnancy' for 3 weeks
I then went to the docs about it, she lightly pressed on my pubic bone and then spent the next 10 minutes trying to peel me off the ceiling where I was crying, I was at the physios 3 days later
I was working at the time and went off sick at 20 weeks as walking up the satirs to the office was taking ages as I was literally pulling myself up, plus sitting down for a long time made it increddibly painful to then stand up

the exercises they give you are pretty much core strength exercises that you would do in a yoga class

until you get to see a physio then the best advice is keep your legs together as much as possible, sleep with a pillow in between your legs, be aware of your posture (sit up straight etc -my physio used to go mad with me for slouching) if you swim keep going with it but NOT breast stroke -back stroke or just floating on your back feels wonderfull!

pingdriver · 19/05/2012 13:55

as others have said get midwife to refer to physio (some hospitals will let you self refer). Keep legs and knees together when getting in/out of bed, car etc etc. Pillow/cushion between knees in bed at all times. Climbing stairs, one step at a time with each foot (slower but better). swimming good but be careful with strokes. My physio and osteopath also said to keep walking/moving as well.

I can't see that link mama2many - you have to be a member and I'm not. What is it?

My SPD/PGP started at 8 weeks and has gotten worse. It got to the stage around 20ish weeks where it leveled out, but then at around 30 weeks has started to get worse again. I'm 34 weeks now. The pain started as what I thought was a pulled muscle and I always noticed being uncomfortable after my usual shopping trip, it then got to the point where I couldn't do my usual shopping trip without literally inching my way around the store in pain. We've learned now that around 10-15 minutes is my limit and whenever I need a rest just stop and have one. I'm sorry I don't have any better news, but hopefully you will find something for you that helps to relieve your pain. Good luck! :)

Hi Galaxy - I had it with 1st preg and have now with 2nd. I have hip/ thigh pains as well as the pubic bone and lower back stuff so that could be it too.
I thought it was just back pain for months so get referred straight away and do not waste any time.
The single best thing for me has been going to aqua aerobics with this one (never did it with 1st) and so am coping 10 times better even though symptoms are actually worse second time around.
Start doing pelvic floors like crazy- your gp is taling out of their bum about "when is too early".
My mw tried to fob me off with a wait and see tactic but as I knew what to do this time I politely re-iterated my desire to be referred to physio.
Be assertive
