I just received my letter inviting me to my first scan in about 6 weeks time. I saw my GP last week and he gave me the impression that I would have a booking-in appointment with a midwife first but there is no mention of this appointment in the letter.
Will a letter from a midwife arrive separately or do I need to seek out an appointment myself? This is my first pregnancy so its all completely new to me. I am in Cambs if that helps. Please help me to work out the system! Thank you.

Mine were at the same appointment, scan first, then directed to another part of the hospital for the boking in.

MrsPaynie · 17/05/2012 16:42

I had to give the midwife a call myself to make an appointment for booking in, around 9 weeks, then I had my scan at the hospital at 12 weeks

HaggisNeepsTatties · 17/05/2012 17:09

My booking in appointment was with a midwife at our GP's surgery - I had to book it in with the receptionist after I saw the GP initially. Mine was at 10 weeks, I think they are usually around 8-10 weeks.
Then I had my scan at the hospital at 12 weeks

Belchica · 17/05/2012 17:25

I'm in SW London and I got separate letters, one for the scan and a separate one for booking in with a load of about what they'd do/ask etc. Maybe call the number on the scan letter and check if you havent recvd anything else in a few days. Congrats!

emblosion · 17/05/2012 17:33

I booked in and had my scan at the same time (but I'm in northern Ireland so prob completely different system) I'd ring number on the letter and check.

It's so annoying when they expect you to just magically know what to do!

SimplySoo · 17/05/2012 17:40

Like Belchica, mine were two appointments, two separate letters. Maybe wait a couple of days in case it's on it's way, then call to ask?

Catsycat · 17/05/2012 17:40

My booking appts have always been at the GP surgery, round 8/9 weeks, totally separate to the scan. Y9ou could phone the surgery and ask how they do things in your area.

These things can be a bit vague - I remember going to see the GP when I found out I was pg with DD1, expecting him to do a pg test, tell me who to see when etc, and he didn't really do/tell me anything. So I asked him "what do I do now", and he just said "get on with it"! Not the most helpful advice ever I'm afraid!!!

blackteaplease · 17/05/2012 19:11

With my first my GP referred me to the midwife who called me up and gave me a scan date and date for booking in appt over the phone. These were 2 seperate appts, scan at hospital, booking in at clinic at GP's.

This time at a different surgery in the same town my GP told me to book my booking in appt at reception on the way out. Then at my booking in appt the MW called the hospital to book me in for my scan.

Sounds like it's different for each region.

ItsMyLastOne · 17/05/2012 19:14

First time round I saw GP then MW then got referred for a scan.

This time I saw a GP who referred me for a scan and to the MW. I happened to get my scan date before having any contact from the MW. I think a lot of procedures have changed recently, that's all.

milkysmum · 17/05/2012 19:15

I had to make the booking appointment myself with the midwife attatched to the GP surgery. I never saw the GP- was their a reason you went to see them? midwife then arranged the dating scan at about 12 weeks.

ItsMyLastOne · 17/05/2012 19:16

Sorry, just to mention that my scan is at a children's centre but my MW said you still talk to a MW at that appointment, it's not just a scan iyswim.

ItsMyLastOne · 17/05/2012 19:18

milkysmum some places just make you see a GP. I've moved between pregnancies but both surgeries made me see a GP first even though they did/said nothing of any use!

susiegrapevine · 17/05/2012 19:19

well where i live you have to have booking in before scan as you need to take your notes with you to the scan. This time round i did get my scan date before booking in but that was due to a mix up and them loosing my referal which they must have had to get my scan date to me. 1st time around the midwife gave me my scan date at booking in.

blackteaplease · 17/05/2012 21:10

Yes, I have to see the GP to get a midwife's appointment. You can't self-refer to the midwife. It's a complete waste of time for the gp and you

Loislane78 · 17/05/2012 21:22

Hi OP, I'm based in Cambridge :) I saw my GP who advised to make appt with MW. I went and it was initial quick mtg with some basic info. so she got me in the system for scans. She arranged a booking appt which was to be at my house and gave me bounty pack with notes which I was to complete before booking appt, which was around 10 wks. I was advised to take my notes to my scan.

Congrats :)

ItsMyLastOne · 17/05/2012 22:11

You do need your notes for your scan. For some reason my mw last time (who was the most horrible mw I've ever met) told me NOT to take them to the scan. So when I did as she said and didn't take them, I got huffed at about it no end!

But getting your scan date before you've spoken to a mw doesn't mean you won't see the mw first. If you're worried about it and it's getting close, just give your surgery a call to chase up your mw referral.

PicklesisScared · 18/05/2012 05:19

Hi there Grin congratulations. I'm in cambs too and my appoints booking sounds like that. I had to wait by the phone. It was like waiting for the kettle to boil. If u don't mind me asking what mw group do u have?

Incaminka · 18/05/2012 10:30

Hi Orange, Loislane and Pickle

I'm in Cambs too! I'm in the Sienna midwife group as I'm based in South Cambs.

What Lois says is correct - you need your bounty pack from the midwife centre or your GP surgery, you need to find out your midwife centre and ring and they'll make an appointment if your GP has not arranged one already. And yes, the midwife letters are separate to the scan letters, coming from different places.

This is my first - at 42! Shock
