I'm due Christmas Eve :)

How do you feel about having a baby around Christmas? I'm looking forward to having a newborn at such a lovely, special time of the year.

becca, definitely get yourself onto the December 2012 thread in antenatal clubs, its a very supportive environment (but I agree, it moves quickly).

I'm due 20th December, and I admit I'm hoping its a little bit early rather than a little bit late.... but obviously as long as it gets here in one piece then a Christmas birthday is hardly the end of the world.

Is being due around Christmas encouraging anyone else to think about home birth? I've got a mental picture of a desolate labour ward with a sad looking tree in the corner and a bit of cheap tinsel - depressing! Whereas in my ideal fantasy world giving birth at home will involve cosy log fires (we don't have one) and sheepskin rugs (ditto) lit by the soft glow of cinnamon scented candles and snow gently falling outside the lead paned windows (which we don't have). Midwife cleans up baby whilst I have a revitalising hot toddy....

I think I've seen too many Christmas films Blush

joby21 · 18/05/2012 18:27

I am due on the 16th dec. Am fully expecting to go overdue as all the women in my family cook babies for longer than 40 weeks! Quite excited about having my homebirth on christmas day (think i have a similar image to cup!

There is only 1 day i really don't want the baby to be born and that is the 20th. That is mil's birthday and i'd rather not have the baby sharing! Also it was the day when i was in hospital having my ectopic removed so can't decide if it would be a good thing or a bad thing!

xkatyx · 18/05/2012 19:46

If I can reassure you about the hospitals at Xmas, they are actually lovely :) they aren't usually busy as they don't book anyone in on Xmas day etc.
Everyone is full of Xmas spirits .. While I had my csection we had Xmas music playing.

All midwifes have Santa hats on and .. They had lovely tree and decorations up.

Hi ya I'm due 29th going by LMP but think it could be 31st going by OV! I have 2 DD's
The 1st was 3 weeks early (but I thought by my dates she was only 2!) 2nd came on her due date, when TTC 2nd I too avoided march as didn't want a Christmas birthday but it took a year to fall and wished I hadn't.
This time I took a more relaxed approached and fell in few months! DH bit shocked as we decided to try after Christmas but didn't expect to have a baby this Christmas. Coming to terms with it and hope it all goes well, but I do feel I'll be on tenderhooks all over the festive period, also my cousin is getting married on the 29th and she's going to kill me Grin
On the positive side at least I'll be on mat leave for Christmas (work in retail and only have 1 day off! Grrrrrrrr sale!) and the DD's might have an extra special present, ooh and always the possibility of being on the front of the local paper with 1st baby of new year! My friends had babies 2 weeks apart end of aug/start sept that will be youngest/oldest in school years so I agree its never the "best" time to have them (also DD's birthdays are 8 days apart and family would have been cross at another around then!)

chipsandmushypeas · 19/05/2012 07:51

Hello Christmas bumps!

I had my scan yesterday, it was amazing! Private clinic so everything was so clear, I could see baby's nose, heart beating. My DP was in awe!

Everything measuring perfect, heartbeat was 164bpm. Here's a pic:

my pudding

Hope everyone is glowing today

Hi everyone!

Ooh, I like the idea of having the first baby if the year! I think New Year's Day would be a lovely day to have a baby, new beginnings and all that :)

Livismum how lovely that you'll get Christmas off, I used to work in retail, and Christmas is just horific.

Beccabubbles Sorry your family are being rubbish. We'll give you plenty of support! It can be scary, it's all new and unknown the first time round. There is lots of information on mn, but do ask any questions you have.

Congratulations everyone :)

beccabubbless · 21/05/2012 09:04

Thanks for the support guys, been lurking around for a while now and everyone is just so lovley!
I'd love to have the homebirth described cupofbrownjoy but alas, I have the same problem as you.. The distinct lack of.. Anything required for a movie home birth! Aha.
Looked for the december chatty thing in antenatel and can't find it :( clearly, pregnancy has lead to me being blind :( aha.x

heliotrope · 21/05/2012 14:18

Currently my due date is 31st Dec but it is a bit random as unsure of lmp or ov date! I think it will probably be moved a bit later at scan and be early Jan which will be a bit more boring. Was horrified at date at first (hadn't really started trying yet or planned it properly and couldn't believe we conceived without trying, as it took ages for my other 2). Ideally I would have liked an April baby... but can't restrict trying to one month of the year!!

Am coming around to it though. A New Year's Eve or 1st jan baby/birthday would be cool, but DP says if it is born on 25th he will never forgive himself (for lack of proper planning he means!). His birthday is around then and he hates it himself.
On the plus side we won't be huge in summer, which can be unpleasant, and leaving work before Christmas will be a joy. When our babies start to crawl it will be nice weather!
It's making me want to start planning early for a really lovely cosy family Christmas and to start getting the stocking fillers for the others now!

beccabubbless · 21/05/2012 16:16

I love all of the things christmas entails, the present giving / wrapping, card writing, watching the WORST christmas films on tv, but anyone else a bit sad on missing out drinking on christmas day?!x

livismum · 21/05/2012 17:02

Yep I'm a Christmas lover too! All of it! And was talking to DH about how I have to start shopping really really early! So everyone will probably end up with loads! Will have to do newborn stocking (just in case a tad early) too or DD's will think Father Christmas has forgotten! Also think the decorations will have to go up nice and early Grin ooh I'm excited already!

mytime777 · 21/05/2012 18:31

Hi.
I too am due a December baby. 16th dec although my mum was exactly 2 weeks late with both me and my sister Confused so may look like a nye baby possibly if I follow in her footsteps!
I am a massive December/ Xmas fan. A massive kid at heart and at first The thought of. Baby at Xmas made me feel a little disappointed on its behalf ( I have a jan bday and no what it's like) but the more I think if it the more it sounds lovely.

  • partner will be off at Xmas any way = more time With us
  • family around to help ( they are off work / or visiting etc)
  • lots of happy people all festive
  • plus decorations, list of food & pressies

Sounds great ( so long as its not Xmas eve, Xmas day , boxing day - all close families bdays !!!Hmm

Nicnac78 · 21/05/2012 19:21

Hiya

I'm another Christmas Eve. I don't really mind but DP is really concerned about timing. I think the first few months with baby will be lovely. It will be just getting warmer as I guess I will be getting braver with going out. This is our 1st so we're very excited but very scared and I can't wait for scan. Booking in on Friday.

beccabubbless · 21/05/2012 19:30

nicnak78 just a bit of a heads up, this is also my first but had to be booked in a few weeks early because of some problems. I found the whole process a bit.. Clinical? I'm not sure how anyone else felt about it, but I was hoping for some mollycoddling moral support but my mw was very uninterested professional.. About everything.
Anyone else have this or only me? I may be being overly sensitive as this is my first and I'm only 20 but.. :s x

(Also, off topic, I was reading a post in active earlier on my phone along the lines of 'you know your poor when..' But now I can't find it, anyone know how I can find it / were also reading and can link me plz?) :) x

chipsandmushypeas · 21/05/2012 19:54

Hey nicnac welcome :)

We have same edd and I've got my booking on Friday too! It's our first so we're very excited too, I had a scan at 8+4 though as I couldn't wait 12 weeks!

Hi! I'm due on December 28th. I was a bit annoyed with myself when I found out because I've always assumed that around Christmas must be a rubbish time for a birthday... so it's nice to find this thread with people pointing out lots of positives :) I guess it does mean I won't be able to travel half way across the country for a big family celebration though...

Sorry to hear about your experience becca. Will you always see the same midwife or might it be someone more caring next time? I had my booking in appointment today and the midwife was lovely, very friendly, explained everything, answered my questions... even did my blood test half way through rather than at the end because she could tell that waiting was making me nervous. (I'm a bit pathetic when it comes to things like blood tests... so I really don't know how I'm going to cope with the whole giving birth part!)

DonkeyTeapot · 22/05/2012 08:32

Becca Baileys for breakfast is one of my Christmas rituals, and I plan on having it no matter what stage of pregnancy / labour I'm at! I will stop at one though, but it will taste LOVELY.

Sorry your booking in was a bit of an anti climax, it's quite boring really isn't it? I have my appointment tomorow afternoon. Just lots of filling in information and weighing and measuring you. It is a good opportunity to ask questions though. Last time, that was the only time I saw that particular midwife. After that I saw the midwife at my GP's practice.

To find the skint thread, use the advanced search button on the top right, just under the main panel along the top. You can put in the criteria you know. When you find it, click "Watch this thread" so that you can find it again later.

chipsandmushypeas · 22/05/2012 08:49

Can anyone recommend questions to ask midwife? I have my booking on Friday

OP posts:
beccabubbless · 22/05/2012 09:26

donkeyteapot thank you for all the help! Will endevour to search for the thread, I was getting pretty into it!
Yeah, I saw my mw at the docs so I'm assuming she will be my mw? :s
I was very surprised that I now don't see my mw until a lot later on in pregnancy? Thought it would be an every couple of weeks thing!

I'm really looking forward to christmas, although I think that I would be happier having baby before christmas because then we could all be together as a family, but still exciting none the less!!

chipsandmushypeas I asked loads of questions at my booking appt that I never thought about before hand, you might find as she's going through your folder that you come up with questions, however, if you have the folder already (I was asked to fill some in before I went?) Then read all of the info in there, and put post it notes in to remind you of the questions!
Hope this helps, good luck!x

heliotrope · 22/05/2012 09:47

I think they've recently changed guidance on how often you are seen (so it is less frequent), I remember being surprised by that last time. I remember booking in with GP midwife with my first and had a similar anticlimax - its just another form to fill for them! Later on I had much nicer midwives who I got to know - its much more fun once the bump is big enough to be measured and the mw can listen for heartbeat (can't remember when that is - maybe after 12 weeks?).
If you are interested you could ask about options of where to give birth, but it might seem too early for that. Also anything you're unsure about with what foods or activities to avoid, or anything you want to know about the tests they do at the scans.

I had not thought of a newborn stocking in case early - good point Livismum! It would look bad if father christmas forgot the newbie.

DonkeyTeapot · 22/05/2012 13:54

Becca Is this the thread you were on? It just popped up in Active, thought I'd link in case you couldn't find it. Skint thread

beccabubbless · 22/05/2012 15:31

Yes! Thank you!!
I'm still trying to get used to navigating the site Blush x

DeterminedandSpecialMum · 22/05/2012 15:37

Hey Ladies,

My DD2 was born 22nd Dec 2011 after being induced. She ended up in SCBU until we were discharged Xmas Day and although it was right on top of Xmas wouldn't of changed it for the world. Smile So it's all good Grin

beccabubbless · 22/05/2012 15:41

Anyone else finding that they are wanting to plan christmas already due to it coinciding with the edd's?!
My dp thinks I've lost my mind talking about trees and fairy lights!!x

livismum · 23/05/2012 10:58

I think I might bring Christmas forward a bit this year so I can enjoy it! (or have 2!) I'm thinking a full on Christmas dinner when the decorations go up, might even let the kiddies have a few pressies early! Yep defiantly think a month of celebrations is the way to go, who says Christmas is only one day!!
