Ugh I am really suffering with this - anyone else? I sneeze constantly and feel like I am permanently blowing my nose. I am not due until August and am just dreading the hot summer days if this carries on. I know the doctor can really only prescribe nasal sprays while pregnant rather than tablets - do they work? :-(

They'll prescribe antihistamine tablets, too

Lortadine is fine to take, chemist may not sell it to you but you can get it on prescription.

i've just been to the doctors about this and they given me piriton tablets. He said they give it to women who have severe itching in later pregnancy, so should be okay.

Tanyaaah · 17/05/2012 13:03

I had piriton, made me really drowsy though. Doctor would only give me eye drops! She said that the nasal spray contains stearoids which can raise blood pressure.

you cen defintiely take antihistamines (on prescriptions)

anti sickness drugs (that i took max dose of from week 6 until birth) are an antihistamine

nannyl · 17/05/2012 13:05

i mean some antihistamines, obviously

Hi.
I went to the drs today as I too suffer from hay fever as well as allergic skin as a result. Normally I have to take antihistamine all year around pretty much to keep on top of it. I stopped taking them when we were trying to conceive and my symptoms have come back straight away ( I'm 9+5)
I was taking the odd piriton at night but they dont cut it for me as the give a quick burst of relief but wear off quickly.
The dr has prescribed me with my original ones ( fexofenadine) but a lower dose however as I'm 9+5 i am worried as it says online they shouldn't be taken when pregnant So think I'm going to have to persevere until I'm in my 2 nd trimester and only take every 3 days if I need too.
I find Vaseline up ur nose and around ur eyes ( not close to the tear ducts) really helps as catches the pollen. Also wear sun glasses as much as you can as that helps stop the pollen getting in your eyes and try to wash your hair each night if u can as pollen gets stuck iyswim and sleeping with it in hair can affect u over night.
Also u can get a non steroid nose spray in boots ( can't remember what it's called though- sorry)

I hope that helps

Xx

mytime

pretty muh everything says dont take when pg... simply because its not been tested on pg people for obvious ethical reasons

if a dr prescribes it to you, you can be pretty confident it should be fine as it has been fine in numerous other pg people Smile

even my folic acid says do not take if pg or planning to get pg without taking advice from a medical proffessional Shock

Thank you - it's reassuring to hear there is something I can do, as as I say, it feels like it's going to be a long haul. Mytime you really are suffering, I do hope the fexofenadine sorts you out.

There is a product called Hay Max which (I think) is a beeswax based ointment which you put around your nose to catch the pollen (like the vaseline comment above). There's a couple of variations of it (smells - there's a lavender scented one as well as original), and I think it had some award when it first came out a few years for being organic and pregnancy friendly. You can find it in Boots (was reminded of it when I saw it today in there) & probably Superdrug.
