Water Infection

Had a call from the dr's surgery this morning to let me know I've got a water infection so I need to go and collect some antibiotics. This must have been picked up in the sample I provided at my booking in appt two weeks ago.

I was really suprised as I've had no symptoms whatsoever. Also we're on holiday at the moment (only about two hours from home) but they said I don't need to go back and it can wait till we're home on Friday.

Feeling a bit anxious now as I've been walking around with this infection for a fortnight without knowing it. Are there likely to be any adverse effects on the baby?Should I conside going back/finding a dr here or are a few days really not going to matter? In addition, I am a bit wary about taking any medication esp in first twelve weeks (am 11 weeks atm) but obv know need to get rid of the infection.

I'd really appreciate other people's thoughts/expeiences. TIA.

Couldn't believe it when I saw this post as this almost exactly reflects my circumstances - sorry not to be able to answer your questions OP, but was also wondering about other people's experiences.

I'm 10+4 and had a call from the Dr today saying that they "might" have picked up an infection from the urine sample I gave at my booking appt last week. However, they want me to do another to confirm, as it could be some other dirt has got in there. No problem, picked up the sample bottle this afternoon, etc.

However, I'm going away on hols for 2 weeks on Saturday and they won't have got the 2nd set of results back in time. I told the Dr this and he seemed completely unconcerned. I have no symptoms (well, of an UTI!) and he actually said that I could wait until I got back from hols to give the 2nd sample.

So, my question is similar to that of the OP - if it turns out that I do have a water infection, what damage could be done by waiting 3 weeks (i.e. from my booking appt urine sample) to treat it? Any advice greatfully received.

Thanks for your reply - sorry you're stressed about this too! I suppose it's reassuring that we've both been told that we don't need to get it sorted straight away. Hopefully someone will be along soon who can answer our questions.

I've had a UTI 4 times so far in my pregnancy (I'm now 35+4). The second time I thought it had disappeared and it wasn't until a month later when I had a hospital check up that I found out I still had it. I've had one since last week and only got my medicine today. Thank god as I'm in pain when I wee! As far as I'm aware a UTI can't pass through to baby, but can develop into a kidney I infection, which I had 2months ago. Again it wasn't too serious but u had to have a renal (kidney) scan which was uncomfortable as my kidney was sore. I've asked the consultant at hospital what the risks are. She said there's a risk of premature labour and it could be extra painful giving birth if a UTI is present.

My DD is 26 weeks pg and at her last mw check a month ago she had a little something come up in her urine test so it got sent off with them saying fi it was anything they'd let her know. They didn't ring.

Last week she has been feeling under the weather and tired/light headed and thought it might be GD, so went in today for the GTT, they remarked how crap she looked and gave her a blood sugar test the pricky finger one there and then, which was fine and a quick urine test too which showed a massive uti/kidney inf but again she'd had no typical symptoms save for the tired/dizzy recently.

Apparently it will show up differently in pregnant women and you can have no symptoms for a long time!

Bladder infections / UTIs can be asymptomatic as far as I know, or you can have ones that don't have the expected symptoms, like pain when you wee. I had one in the second trimester this pg, and had horrible back pain and lower abdominal pain, but only a brief period of a couple of hours where I needed to wee a lot.

They will be careful about what antibiotics they give you - some are perfectly safe early on. If you are worried, ask them to show you the medicine book (not sure what it is actually called, but it lists all the medicines, and covers what trimester of pg - if any - you can take them in).

Im now 27 weeks and just got out of hospital with a water infection, for the last week Ive been feeling very weak and wobbly, didn't want to eat anything and had lots of pain in my lower belly. Passed out last night and went into hospital. Started taking antibiotics last night and having a lazy day on the sofa. Im not an expert but Im sure it won't do bump any harm. Just take it easy and don't push yourself.

I suffer with recurrent UTI's. I am on long term antibiotics (cefalexin 500mg 3 times a day) and I have been taking these all throughout my pregnancy without any issues at all - on the advice of my GP and specialist at the hospital. I am currently 35 weeks.

Don't worry about taking the antibiotics at all.

There is also no major risk to leaving a UTI during pregnancy (as long as you do get treatment as soon as you can) - apart from the fact that it can be painful (surprised you've not had any discomfort, they can be very painful!) and if left for months (and I do mean months generally) they can turn into a kidney infection which can be harder to treat - stronger antibiotics, I've had them all!

Don't panic. Take the tablets and get well soon x

Thanks for all the replies. I managed to speak to a mw this morning, who suggested that should maybe get another sample checked given that I don't have any symptoms. It's interesting to hear that others have been asymptomatic too though - everything I've heard about UTIs is that they involve agonising pain esp when weeing or otherwise make you feel generally unwell, and I've had nothing at all like this (other than the some pregnancy queasiness).

The mw I spoke to said UTIs can be "of concern" and that "on balance" it's usually better to have antibiotics. She seemed very reluctant to expand on why they are a concern, but eventually said there's a risk of early labour if you have one at 35/36 weeks. Hopefully if I do have one it'll be long sorted by then though.

Bit of an update. I went to the GP when I got back from holiday, and he agreed that it was odd I'd had no symptoms. He recommended another test and the results of that have come back all clear.

Obviously, I'm very relieved but tbh I'm a little bit Hmm about the whole thing. I completely understand that mistakes do happen, but I think the general practice of just prescribing antibiotics without speaking to you to check how you are/ discuss any concerns etc. is not great. Plus I think they perhaps should have realised how long it had been since the test and queried why I'd not been in touch complaining of symptoms as this maybe could have pointed to the test being wrong.

Although I accept that any ABs given wouldn't have specifically caused harm, surely taking them unnecessarily is not a good thing, even if only on a wider scale with the use of too many ABs leading to greater resistance of bacteria in general.

I think the thing that's annoyed me most is just this feeling of being 'processed' - you are told you need medication, you should just go and take it with no questions asked, and they certainally don't want to provide any futher information to you. I know it's all down to costs at the end of the day, and I'm also more than a tad hormonal, but I do think it could have been dealt with in a more appropriate way.
