...how much do I need to worry at nearly 39 weeks?

I need to check with my mother as can't remember having it as a kid but know that I had the vaccinations (which may explain why I can't remember having it).

Did a quick google and very quickly decided to close the window, does anybody around know whether I actually need to worry?

Docs appt in an hour or so, time is going very slowly

Writing that has just made me realise... DS is also vaccinated, he's now almost 3 (so not had the pre-school set, but is up to date for his age). Wouldn't that make it quite unlikely that he has measles??

As far as I know, you're tested in early pg for immunity to measles, so give your MW a call and ask her

Have you checked his mouth? The first sign is usually cold-symptoms and grey spots on the gums

OddBoots · 15/05/2012 09:01

There is a lot of measles going around and also another virus that looks a lot like it - my dd had actual measles between her MMR jabs so it is possible.

Your best bet is to contact your midwife, either your community midwife if you have her (or his) number or direct to delivery suite. They will be able to give you the best advice.

Unlikely but not impossible. Vaccination not 100% effective.

You poor thing - v stressful. I don't know much about measles exposure in pregnancy but you probably need to try and get ds diagnosed first. Flat rash? Coughing? Spots in mouth? Don't take him to the GP, but call and explain. My ds had measles at 11 months - no one was able to give a firm diagnosis on examination but they did a saliva test which was positive. He was really sick, and it was terrifying. V much hope for all your sakes it is just a nasty virus - lots of things look like measles but aren't.

He's had a high temp all weekend, tired, bit grumpy, clingier than normal, cold symptoms. Don't know about gums yet, he's not being very agreeable, but he's been poking around inside his mouth a lot - I initially put the temp down to teething because of this. But the rash started to look a bit odd yesterday (slightly different to his usual eczema but again I didn't worry at first because of this) but today is more widespread.

Will see what doc says and then contact mw too. Have everything crossed it's just a virus.

Are you going into the doctors or are they doing a phone consultation? Do they know that's what you are going in for. I've never had chicken pox and ds hasn't had it either and he's 13. My midwife told me a story of a woman getting it at 39 weeks too and she went on to have a healthy baby. I know they are different things but I thought that maybe what the midwife said would help.

luckysocks · 15/05/2012 09:09

hmm at the moment I have an appt to go in. It's a bugger to get an appt there so I'm reluctant to cancel it, but should maybe ring them first.

I think the risks involved with measles are more concerned with the earlier months - at 39 weeks, the baby is as fully developed as it's going to be in the womb and just waiting to be evicted. That said, your DS needs to be checked out anyway and your GP should be able to put your mind as rest about baby as well as diagnose DS. I think you should also let your MW know what the GP says if it is a virus just so they know what the score is regards as risk you might carry to other people when you go into hospital to deliver (if you're not having a homebirth).

OddBoots · 15/05/2012 09:31

You should really phone, at the very least they can then see if they can sort out a separate waiting room to protect other vulnerable patients.

goingmadtrying · 15/05/2012 09:49

im sure it tells you in your pg notes whether your immune in your blood results, bless how worrying hopefully he just has a virus that is causing a rash, good luck at the drs im assuming they are expecting your ds with measles so should take the correct precautions :(

luckysocks · 15/05/2012 10:56

Well panic over, not measles, just another development of his eczema and some sort of bug!

Phew Brew

Thanks for all your replies.
