Can anyone recommend a physio to treat SPD in SW London (or anywhere in London if they're good!)?

I'm nearly 36 weeks pregnant with my first child and have recently started getting quite severe pain in the front right of my pelvis. It fits the descriptions I've read of SPD and it's pretty difficult to walk with it. I'm a bit worried as I'm so close to the end of my pregnancy and don't want to be inactive for the last few weeks. Also want to understand what it might mean for the birth itself.

Can anyone recommend a specialist physio? I live near Clapham Junction, but happy to travel further afield if I get a good recommendation.

Thanks!

I can't recommend a physio but I can recommend a chiro if that is any help. In Parsons Green. He is treating my SPD - am only 17 weeks but I see him anyway and he picked up that my pelvis was "going a bit" at 11 weeks. I am getting pain but it is a lot better having seen him. Here is the link to their website and sorry you are having horrid pain. I also have an SI belt which I wear and really helps alleviate the aching at the front.

I have this from my first pregnancy. unfortunatley I have a severe case of it. it never got better and im 20 weeks pregnant with our second. We spent 4.5 hours walking around Hyde Park yesterday and today i can barely walk to the toilet, let alone take my toddler outside for some fresh air. it is the worst thing ever!
The Physio i saw (in Australia) got me to do exercises and gave me a belt to wear, which was too uncomfortable on my pregnant belly. I had to be super careful rolling over and made sure my OB was well aware of my pelvis while i was giving birth, so as not to cause further damage. Im hoping after this baby a skeletal specialist can sort me out. i will also love the number for the physio you find! :-)
i hope you are not in to much pain.

Sixphysio are v good, the branch that helped me is not in your area but they do have a branch in parsons green (same as first poster- wonder why it's such a nexus!)... Actually if memory serves me right they have a 'women's' Physio specialist at the one in parsons green.

I went to pro physio near earlsfield station after birth of my daughter (very traumatic pregnancy labour exasperated existing condition)... Took few months but did make real difference- remember to do exercises they give u though :). www.prophysiotherapy.co.uk/services.html

I'm seeing a chiropractor for SPD, which started at the end of my first pregnancy, came back earlier during 2nd and was noticeable at 4 wks with this my third.

The chiropractor is amazing, she says SPD is very treatable. Her treatment is gentle involves no special excercises for me to do and has left me feeling much more 'stable' after just 2 sessions.

Unfortunately I'm not in London. Maybe your midwife can make a recommendation? Look for one that has an interest in SPD/PGP. Having seen a physio last pregnancy I would say the treatment from my chiropractor has been much better - I couldn't even do the excercises I was given as it was too uncomfortable last time.

I had severe SPD in pregnancy 3 (physio wanted me in a wheelchair type of bad!), I have to be honest and say I found physio useless in both pregnancy and postnatal but my osteopath was a miracle worker.... and has maintained me at a relatively pain free level in this pregnancy too.

british school of osteopathy near borough market. They are very affordable because supervised students will treat you. If that is your thing.. I went recently and had a great result.

lastexitbrooklyn · 15/05/2012 13:25

oh, wanted to add that they have an expectant mother's clinic so I found that reassuring. Good luck

SweetPea3 · 15/05/2012 13:41

As per a previous poster, Six Physio are excellent, and the one in Parsons Green/Fulham has a women's health specialist. You can also do pilates supervised by her

Goosee · 15/05/2012 20:02

Thanks so much for all the responses! I'll definitely check out the places suggested and report back once I've had some treatment. Good luck to everyone else suffering too...

I know a fantastic chiro in Barnes, SW13 or I can recommend wholeheartedly a fantastic physio clinic in NW London www.edgwarephysio.com/index.asp

Juliet Moss & Associates - Nightingale Lane SW12 & the Thurleigh Road Medical Centre

Otherwise try to get an urgent NHS referral to the St Johns Hill team

Hi, I found the women's physios at St George's in tooting really good. I got a referral and first appointment in days and more than sufficient time and appointments to help. Apparently, they are renowned for their NHS physio there (and it was all on the NHS too). If you have a sympathetic GP I would request a referral there (I was not even booked in to deliver at St George's but still got my physio there).
