Ketones, glucose, protein AND Group B Strep - should I be worried?!

Currently 33wks pregnant with DC2 and just had a routine midwife appointment - with a midwife I have never seen before who advised that I have Group B Strep - which apparently showed up in a urine test back in March although nobody had told me until now!! When I asked what that meant she said 'Nothing really, you'll just get some antibiotics during labour.' Clearly she hadn't read my notes as I am most likely to have an ELCS due to EMCS with DC1. She then tried to talk me into a VBAC despite having no knowledge of what I - or my DS - went through last time but that's a whole other story!

Perhaps more importantly, she also advised that I have 1+ protein, 2+ ketones and 4+ glucose in my urine and said 'OOh that's a bit worrying, we don't like ketones. Have you had lots of sweets today.' The answer is no - I had some fruit and a mocha (choc/coffee thing) for breakfast and a sandwich, crisps and 3 glasses of water at lunch. So, should I be worried? I did ask what the ketones / glucose meant but she just said she would call me tomorrow to let me know if I need to go to the day assessment unit at the hospital.

Basically, I had sudden onset of PE with DC1 at 33+2 and then spent 3 weeks in and out of hospital being tested / monitored until failed induction at 36+1 resulting in a crash section. We are both fine but it wasn't much fun and I honestly thought I might have avoided any problems this time around - being back in hospital would be a nightmare as DS is on;y 18mths old. So, I am now panicking a bit.... Annyone have any insight into what these levels might mean? Thanks so much!

The ketones & glucose are indicators that you should have your bloods done to test for gestational diabetes. It doesn't necessarily mean that you have it though! Urine tests are not diagnostic for diabetes.

Hopefully you'll get some answers tomorrow -please try not to worry too much - and don't change what you eat meantime - as changing your diet will affect the accuracy of the test.

Hope you get on ok - keep us posted.
