just come from the hospital after my eight week scan and they say that i have an amniotic band that will need careful monitoring as in some cases it can lead to restricted growth of limbs in a baby - but it probably isn't the case in my case as the band doesn't seem to go across the baby but they will be able ot tell more at 20 weeks! i have looked in my books and on the web and can't find aything out about this. can anyone help? i m obviously worried as it seems to be one thing after another - if you have any info it would be much appreciated.

I haven't heard of it sorry- hope mears will be able to help you. Just wanted to say hugs. Also I have a number of friends who have had scares from scans- and everything has turned out fine. Will they be scanning you inbetween, or just leaving you until 20 weeks?

they are going to be scanning me all the way through so hopefully it will just disappear - i hope mears can help too!

daisybob, sorry to hear that you have had a scare at your scan.

I have come across this as a cause of some interference with the growth of limbs of babies, but I am afraid i can't remember exactly how it works. I have read about it on a parents site called Limbdifferences.org If you can't find it, post again and i will find the exact address. It is a busy, freindly American site (but lots of u.K parents too) for children with limb Differences.

I think that Amniotic banding can SOMETIMES cause loss of fingers, or part of an arm or hand.

If this turns out to be the case, please keep posting. I am a Mum of a DS who has an incomplete foot a short leg and a bone missing from his leg. This was obviously a bit of a shock when we found out (at 20 weeks), BUT the preparation before his birth was SO reassuring, and we came to know that it was simply a structural thing, it doesn't threaten his health, it certainly isn't affecting his 100% enjoyment of life, and has not for one nanosecond interfered with our joy in him. It just isn't an issue.

Please keep us in touch about this, daisybob, and do feel free to contact me off board if you would like to.

But remember: it's just a maybe anyway.

Hugs and Good luck.

daisybob: have just checked the limbdifferences site, and that is it's address. The talk board is called connections.

You can search amniotic band on that site, but you might be best to post a question for the doctor on that site who is there to answer q's, as the majority of parents using the site are there because their babies have been born and they were the ones where the Band DID result in growth restriction. (remember that if you look at the site! It doesn't, by definition, have parents whose scans revealed the 'maybes' that never were!)

Daisybob, a friend of mine had amniotic bands and I started a thread about it a while ago, here . You got a few more replies than me! My friend had some extra scans to monitor the situation, and her baby is now about 3 weeks old and is absolutely fine.

HTH and good luck.
