Hi All. Im 15weeks today, have had my 12 wk scans and a booking in appointment with the midwife around the same time; but am not scheduled to see anyone else til my consultants appointment on 25th of this month. By which time Ill be nearly 17wks. Is this usual? It just seems quite a long time to go without even a check up. I realise I might be worrying unnecessarily, but its my first pg abduction I feel like I don't have any point of contact. Has this been anyone else's experience?

Hello - I'm not sure whether it differs from NHS trust to trust, but where I live you have a booking in appointment at 8 weeks, scan at 12, then scan at 20 - all being well. It seems a long time but after the 20 week scan the checks soon mount up, and get quite regular after 30 weeks or so. Obviously if they had found something odd at 12 wks, you would be seen more often - that's my experience anyhow. The first pregnancy can be a bit daunting, and if there is anything you are worried about, you should not be worried about popping in to a midwife clinic, or whenever they are doing their sessions at the surgery - good luck, and dont' worry:)

Where we are, you get a booking around 9/10 weeks, then a scan at around 12 weeks, back to the midwife at around 16 weeks and a scan at 20 weeks. Then I think the next time I'll see a midwife is 28 weeks, then they are a little more often

PurplePidjin · 13/05/2012 08:49

I had my booking in at 8 ish weeks, scan is booked for 12+4, then ill see the mw again at 16.

There's a sort of schedule thing in the massive pile of paperwork I was given, you might have one too? Afaik monthly is pretty normal in the early stages unless you're at risk - I'm trying to convince myself that the less they want to see me the better Wink

sparklekitty · 13/05/2012 09:02

I had booking at 7 weeks, scan at 12, midwife at 16, scan again at 20. I now have to wait till 25 weeks to see midwife but then I see her every 2/3 weeks till birth. Guess its probably different in every trust.

I had booking at 8 weeks, scan at 12, scan at 20, then 24, 28 weeks. have another next week at 32 weeks and then it's 3 weekly til 38 weeks when it is weekly. It's my second pregnancy, totally uncomplicated and actually the number of appointments feels a bit excessive this time round. If you are worried why not ring your community midwife for a chat?

Thanks everyone. Looks like its pretty normal then, Im just panicking! I've only really started to worry cos I've had a bad stomach bug this weekend and realised I didn't really have anyone to ask for advice, although MN came to the rescue!
purplepidgin is probably right, the less they want to see you the better!

I'm trying to drum it into myself! Btw my mw gave me a work mobile I can call her on anytime, and also said I can call the office anytime; are you completely sure you don't have similar buried in your paper mountain? :)

pregnantteacher · 13/05/2012 11:33

How did you know about my paper mountain? Have you been in my house?! ;-)
Actually, the midwife I booked in with isn't my midwife. Apparently the practice here is for me to meet with the consultant on 25th and if everything seems ok, ill be assigned a midwife in the community or something.

I walked out of my appointment with an entire epic novel of information. I'm fairly literate and don't understand half of it, it would be very easy to lose one little phone number in it all!

ragged · 13/05/2012 11:56

There should be a MW team you can phone at any time, failing that there's A+E

the more they see you the more chances they'll find an imaginary problem, a worrisome false alarm. Believe me, less is often better!!

PestoPenguin · 13/05/2012 12:02

Yup, appointments in pregnancy seem pertty thin on the ground these days, which is good in one way, but a bit disconcerting in another. so far this time I've had:
11 weeks booking in with MW
12 weeks blood test
17 weeks check with MW
20 week scan
28 weeks blood test
29 weeks check with MW

I was quite shocked that it would be 12 weeks (3 months!) between MW checks. So far my urine has only been checked once and blood pressure twice! I looked it up on the NICE antenatal care guidelines and actually 6-7 appointments seems normal for low risk subsequent pregnancies.

I was also offered a 12 week scan, but declined.

PestoPenguin · 13/05/2012 12:06

Actually, Ragged'd viewpointt is probably spot on Wink

What upset me a little is that we now have team midwifery care, and so it'll likely be a different midwife I see each time. Given that I will have a homebirth that's hugely disappointing, as I want the chance to get to know the person who's most likely to deliver my baby. As it is, I may meet each member of the 5 person team once, or a couple of them twice, and then goodness knows who'll turn up in labour Sad. Though, having said that, the last two homebirths I had they were so stretched that despite in theory having 1-2-1 care throughout pregnancy, when it came to the birth each time I got 2 midwives I'd never seen before Sad.
