Traveling - what is the last safe week to travel during pregnancy?

My DH and I booked a sailing trip to Croatia a while back, I am not 12 weeks pregnant and we are going in August when I will be around 28 weeks. Not sure if I am being paranoid but am a bit concerned that now we will be on a boat and not that close to medical help... any advice greatly appreciated!

I think at 28 weeks I wouldn't worry about it too much about the boat bit though I would a bit later on. A few things to check / consider though

  1. Many insurers are reluctant to insure pregnant women especially during third trimester which you'd just be starting.
  1. Most airlines will require a fit to travel note from your doctor before agreeing to take you
  1. Are you sure you'll be able to cope with being on a boat without being sick? Sometimes (though not always) quesiness and morning sickness return in later pregnancy.

I really hope you get to go and enjoy yourself. take a look here for more information

Most airlines require a dr/ midwife note from 28 weeks, and do not permit flying from36 weeks. I have travelled twice - at 30 weeks and 32 weeks, but have not been asked for my notes. But I am flying again at 36 weeks and will get another note, just to be safe.

Sounds like a fun trip!

If this is an organised sailing trip then you may well find they have policies on how late you can go on it. Aside from that, are you going to be doing the active part of sailing? By that stage I couldn't have done the working part (we had a mostly sitting down holiday at 30 weeks and I still ended up in hospital with raised blood pressure).

Thank you for your advice MrsHoarder - it's a relaxed organised sailing holiday, so I won't be doing anything. Totally agree, based on how tired I am now there is no way I'd be any use except to hold a deck chair down!
Faintpinkline - I have had hardly any morning sickness which is lucky, the cabins on the boat are air conditioned, so it should be ok.
It is supposed to be a lazy holiday, with short trips and walks around the lakes in the second week.
Alligatorpie - I will definitely get a note from my GP before I fly.
Thanks everyone!

Is this a Neilsen type holiday when you're actually doing the sailing or are there crew and you just get to sit around looking decorative? If the former, how many are on your yacht & what size is the yacht? At that stage, I certainly wouldn't want to be the one jumping onto shore with the warps, wouldn't have been able to move that quickly around the deck, would probably have been very concerned about doing anything up in the bow & walking along a gang plank (just because your centre of gravity will have changed) and would probably also find sleeping in the cabins pretty uncomfortable. Also, the Neilsen holiday I did in Croatia (about 5 yrs ago) involved mooring in small harbours where there weren't street lamps so everything was done by torch light and, whilst you'd be sober, I'd still be nervous about tripping as the ground could be very uneven & rocky.
That sailing holiday was one of the besy holidays I have ever been on but I'm not sure I'd want to do it at 28 weeks. I'd definitely double check that the holiday company will still take you & make sure you have comprehensive insurance.

It's a more 'luxury cruising holiday' than sailing with a crew, catering and air conditioned cabins which stops off at various islands. I think I should be able to take it easy.
Thanks Murtette - good advice I have emailed the travel agent to check the implications and as you say to check that the company will still take me... fingers crossed!

Hi everyone thanks again for your advice, I have now checked and the boat cruise company is ok to take me, also had a scan which means I will actually be closer to 26 weeks, so this should hopefully help with the insurance.
Husband is still nervous about this holiday, but I am hoping it will be ok. I have been very lucky so far, no complications and feeling good.
Now to sort out the letter from my midwife/ Gp and comprehensive insurance.
x
