Employment rights during pregnancy

Does anyone have any experience of having to test their employment rights during pregnancy?

I am possibly facing a redundancy situation. I can avoid redundancy by possibly being asked to work on a site about 150 miles away from home. (I am a consultant and until my present placement I did this sort of thing for 3 of 4 years). Truthfully the idea of being away from home (and DS and DP) all week is not great. If I wasn't pregnant I would push for redundancy (probably will only get statutory minimum redundancy pay which is not great at all). However being pregnant I also feel that the long drives on Monday mornings and Friday evenings (or long train journeys with luggage) would be exhausting and stressful. Last time I was pregnant I went into premature labour at 34 weeks as I had been travelling around too much (they stopped it and I eventually delivered at 42 weeks!). I also have a minor heart condition which means I am seen more closely by the obstetrician and have been advised to not overstress myself.

I don't want to be awkward or difficult but I am worried. Particularly as the job market is so down at the moment.

I have no expertise on this, but you might find it easier to resist this because you are pregnant, as your employer may be reluctant to get into trouble at a tribunal by making unreasonable demands on a pregnant woman. There are several Mumsnetters who work in HR. Can they help out here?

Sorry, haven't any experience myself, but the Maternity Alliance may be able to help - they've got an information line.
