Is it safe to dye your hair whilst pregnant?

I didn't last time round as I wasn't quite as grey as I am now. This time I'm sorely tempted, but the worry about whether it's safe has meant that I've not yet...

Yes, but your hair may react unpredictable compared to normal.

Apparently it's better to use non ammonia dyes, especially in first tri.

Bellaboo123 · 09/05/2012 15:35

Apparently it's better to highlight as opposed to colour as it does touch the scalp and get absorbed into the blood stream

Doesn't not does!

I dyed my hair at home....it went bright day glo orange, then dyed it again and it went egg yolk yellow :( went to the hairdressers and they sorted it out. It reacted strangely to the home dye, it's perfectly safe but I'd go to hairdressers

Dyed mine both pregnancies, was the same as always...

HaggisNeepsTatties · 09/05/2012 16:02

Yep - I've had mine done several times so far (though am gradually moving from my bright red back to chocolate brown natural colour as doubt I'll have time to get my roots done every six weeks when the baby arrives!)
As others have said you're hair/scalp can react differently when you're pregnant but I've not had any issues.

Perfectly safe - the dye doesn't get into your body. However, your skin/hair changes, so as others have said, it may react differently. It's always recommended to do a patch test but I think its even more necessary during pg.

Some people don't react badly at all, but again, it might worth getting a hair dresser to do it anyway!! I don't dye my hair but I have noticed that I am more sensitive to chilli in pg - my DH reminded me that it was the same with DD when I commented that the (v slight) spice in food recently made my lips tingle when it wouldn't normally cause a reaction.

I dyed mine both times and no bad reaction or weird outcome. Saying that, I have very dark hair and was just getting rid of the greys, so I had no ammonia in the dye, and wasn't going lighter. There is a helpline number on the pack, so maybe give that a call, and do a patch test if you are concerned.

I dyed mine last time with a semi permanent as no harsh chemicals and if all goes wrong it washes out in around 20 weeks plus cos it washes out you don't get the roots thing like you do with permanent. I also thought you had to use ammonia free dye but there are many permanent ones now with no ammonia

Thanks everyone, I might try!! Dubious about what colour I'll turn out!

Go for a neutral colour, rather than a red or bright colour!! I did mine red last week and it went orange!! Nightmare will be using black from now on!
