Lots of Kicking, Now Not So Much...

Hi All

I am 24 weeks pregnant and have been feeling my baby move since week 15. It's always been really active, but the last couple of days the movement has eased off and when I do occasionally feel baby move, it is more gentle...

...is it normal to have days like this? This is my first baby so I worry about small things!

TYIA!

Any change in movement is always worth a call to the midwife

PoppyS34wantssleep · 08/05/2012 11:57

Definitely call the MW, they told me off for not contacting them about a change in movement pattern.

It's always better to get it checked out, although I think mine was caused by a change of position :) and I think he was just tucked away and hiding.

Good luck. x

MIdwife's phone is off :( She must be on a day off! How very dare she! I've texted her though. About to go to lunch so will lie down and prod the baby to see if she wants to play ball!!

Can you call the maternity department instead?

Kveta · 08/05/2012 12:04

I have had this a few times with DC2. almost always the day after a midwife appt Hmm

anyway, you can also call the labour ward for advice you know?

I did, and was told to have a cold drink, then lie on my left hand side for an hour, counting the kicks. If I felt movement, but couldn't feel 10 distinct movements, then lie there for another hour, counting.

If after the first hour I'd felt nothing, then I was advised to go in for monitoring. Likewise if I felt nothing more after the second hour.

As it was, DC2 always started kicking the minute I'd connected to the midwife/labour ward...

hope all is well :)

My midwife never answers her phone either, in the front of your notes do you have a list of other numbers to call? I'm at the same stage as you and I've called up a couple of times about various things (2nd baby, but the worrying isn't any better!), the number I call is for the maternity assessment suite - it might be called something similar at your hospital?

Each time they've reassured me - they move around so much at this stage, it's still so early & how much you can feel at this stage depends where your placenta is too

I've been using one of those kick counter wristbands from the count the kicks website which is useful in working out the baby's activity pattern

McPhuck · 08/05/2012 12:13

Call the maternity unit and have a chat with someone there. They may suggest you pop down just to ease your mind Smile

PoppyS34wantssleep · 08/05/2012 12:16

I just remembered, to get baby to wake up for monitoring the MW gave me a cup of really cold water to drink straight down, which seems to wake Bump up - so maybe try that?

Thanks everyone :)

A midwife came out to see me at my lunch break because I was freaking out, and she listenend to the heartbeat. As it was everything was fine. She said it is very likely that baby had turned round so she was facing inwards which means you are less likely to feel kicks. She said the heartbeat was great and I have nothing to wory about! Phew!!

Silly baby Smile

And the stressing mummy out has begun already Grin

Glad you've been reassured

PoppyS34wantssleep · 08/05/2012 13:22

Phew, glad she's reassured you. :)

joanna1985 · 08/05/2012 13:34

im a bit worried, my baby normally kicks all the time an di havent felt it today at all. ive tried drinking old water and nothing.

Boys2mam · 08/05/2012 13:41

Joanna I would ring your midwife/labour ward too and get yourself in for monitoring.

joanna1985 · 08/05/2012 13:43

My midwife isnt available either, maybe try ringing maternity. it was moving last night ok. im 23 weeks and it normally moves about alot.

Boys2mam · 08/05/2012 13:46

I had reduced movements at 28 wks and rang the labour ward (number in my notes) and they told me to drink cold water/have a bath/lie on my left and when that didn't work they advised me to come right in - I did and they listened to the heartbeat. They advised it was probable he had just changed position but not to hesitate if I was worried again and go straight back in.

Give them a call x

joanna1985 · 08/05/2012 13:49

yeah i might go home and try that and get it moving, if its anything liek me today its really really tired! thanks Boys2mam x

Boys2mam · 08/05/2012 13:53

Yes they have a tendancy to have lazy days too but if still nothing please don't wait to go in.

xx

welliesandpyjamas · 08/05/2012 14:01

I've just come back from the midwife unit for the exact same reason. No movements for a few days. Baby was hard to locate, hiding in lower back. All ok, just not near the front where I'd be able to feel movements normally at this stage.

It's always worth calling them, they too are happier to see a relieved if slightly embarassed panicky mum than not to check or worse.

joanna1985 · 08/05/2012 14:22

i cant even get in touch with anyone. my doctor said there is no midwife on, so gave me aother number to ring, when i did it was a recorded message that gave out a wrong number for me to call. so i rang the maternity unit in the hospital and they put me on hold for 20minutes then hung up!

0FrillyKnickers0 · 08/05/2012 15:05

Joanna, it may be the same as mine. When they turn and face your spine you don't feel the movements and kicks. It was reassuring for me to hear the heartbeat, but apparently that is SO common. Try not to worry yourself too much (easier said than done, I know).

Joanna - without wishing to be accused of scare mongering - please call them back, you need seeing asap for monitoring.

joanna1985 · 08/05/2012 16:04
