Hi all! I am very excited (cautiously so) as I got my BFP this morning! never been pg before, so I am not sure what comes next? I presume I need to see GP, but is it too early as I'm only 1 day late for AF? will they laugh me out of the surgery and tell me to go back when I'm further along? sorry if this is a stoopid question but would appreciate some advice on what happens next :)

CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!

AliceHurled · 07/05/2012 19:50

Congrats. I went to the drs at about 5 weeks I'd say. Pretty soon after I knew. They then told me to arrange a booking in appointment with the midwife. Mine may have been slightly different as a I had some light bleeding so was sent for a scan, but I don't recall that being my reason for going. They didn't laugh me out of the surgery at all. Just told me the next steps really.

Hi Crafty Smile

Ring your GP during the week and ask them what you should do, it will depend on the practice and the PCT you belong to. Sometimes you'll see the GP first to confirm the PG and other times you'll see a midwife straight away, usually by about 6-8 weeks so they can book you in for your 12 weeks scan.

Exciting times ahead!

Susieloo · 07/05/2012 19:53

Congratulations!!! Smile I'm 30 weeks today and this is my first, I made a dr's appointment straight away so saw the gp at about five weeks, she didn't do anything other than take a few basic details and then I made an appointment to see the midwife who I saw at about eight weeks.

CraftyGirly · 07/05/2012 20:04

waves at Rue fancy seeing you here!

I will ring them this week then, knowing my GPs it will be next week before they can see me anyway! thanks for the advice all :)

I get about a bit Grin

Ladybythebeach · 07/05/2012 20:14

Congratulations Crafty,

I got my BFP on Tuesday and am exactly the same as you - no clue whatsoever to do. I phoned my GP and was told there was no need to make an appointment (couldn't get one for another 10 days anyway!!) just had to pop in to pick up midwife referral form. This is then sent off and then midwives contact you directly to make appointment.

I am in Dorset, of course it may be slightly different where you live.

It's all feeling very surreal to me and I'm sure you'll feel like me and think you should be doing more!

All the best.

Hello,
Also just found out I'm pg, will be third baby if sticks.... as far as I know you don't generally need to see the GP, just the midwife to get in the system and scans booked etc. I've never seen GP before when pg (london).
So, the weird thing is there's not much to do except fizzing inside about your secret and daydreaming! (depends who you're telling though!). I think the first few weeks when nobody knows can be really special, but also frustrating as the next 8 or so weeks will be the slowest of your life.

You need to look after yourself, get lots of sleep and eat nice things so that you are strong incase any early pregnancy symptoms hit over the next weeks. BUt also do everything that you usually do, as long as safe for baby.
And also find some nice websites/books that give you nice pictures and updates on the stages of pregnancy, or email you every week. I read everything I could get my hands on - I'd brushed up on labour positions before I was out of the first trimester - but I'm just like that!!
Congratulations!

Congratulations :)

every area is different, they won't laugh at you for ringing up and finding out what you need to do.

if you aren't taking any pre-natal vitamins then get some and some folic acid as well. take them with/after main meal of the day or they can upset some people's tummies a little.

CraftyGirly · 08/05/2012 09:44

thanks for all the advice folks! I phoned up the Drs this morning and the receptionist told me I need to see GP first who will give me info for what to do next :) so got an appointment on friday!

Congratulations Crafty I found out last Sunday, did another test yesterday and one today! Already have 4 year old twins. I'm going to the doc on Thursday.
All the best x

cogitosum · 08/05/2012 17:23

Congratulations! I had a BFP on Friday (and have since done 6 more tests!) - first pregnancy as well!

cogitosum · 08/05/2012 17:29

Oh and I went to GP this morning - very disappointing as I'd been told to expect in that all they do is refer you to community midwifes (although could be consultant in my case because of family history of HELLP)

I wanted to go because I was having some crampy pains but all seems perfectly normal so not sure if it was really necessary.

Littlemissimpatient · 08/05/2012 22:49

Congratulations! In my area you have to see GP first who then lets you contact mw team. They had a case a few years ago where a gp prescribed a pregnant woman something not knowing she was pregnant with major consequences. They must have separate patient management systems or something.
