Question about cycle length and baby coming early.

Just been chatting to a friend who is at uni training to be a MW.
She said that as I only had 23 day cycles when I conceived there is more chance of DC3 being a week or so early as MWs use 28 day cycles to work out due dates.

The scans gave a due date of 21st June which is what I worked out too.

Any ideas on this?

Thanks.

It all depends on when you ovulated - the 'standard' measure is a 28 day cycle, ovulating on day 14, with a 14 day LP. You could easily have ovulated on day 14 still and only have a 9 day LP, which would put your due date exactly the same. Ideally you want an LP of 10-14 days, so you may have ovulated on day 13 or earlier.

Your MW may change the dates based on a dating scan, which is usually your 12 week scan. It sounds like your scans have all matched your expectations, so I wouldn't worry about the baby coming early.

Babies come late and early for reasons known only to them! You should prepare yourself for the chance of an early delivery, or a late one, but don't worry or obsess over it. Your DC will turn up when ready.

I ovulated on day 12 and got my BFP 11 dpo. Which was the day before my period was due.

I know she'll come when she's ready but wanted to know if there was anything in it. If should be more prepared for her to come at 38 weeks.

I have 30+ day cycles and both previous DCs had to be induced at 40+14 and took 4 days to come out!

One of the many midwives I saw said that she believes the longer the cycle they longer the pregnancy.

Your midwife/gp should have altered your due date based on your cycle length so I suspect nothing needs changing. 30 day cycle add 2 days to result on the wheel etc. The scan also uses cycle length to calculate due date by dates then looks at crown rump length and calculates due date from measurements.

Most of the online calculators ask for your cycle length as well. Baby will turn up when s/he's ready though!

Your friend is still training so whilst I wish her much luck in her career do ask your own fully trained midwife/gp if you're worried about anything just to double check.

I think if you ovulated on day 12 then that is only 2 days earlier than day 14 which is what they assume, so sounds right that the scans and your dates agree.

So your due date might be 2 days earlier than the date that you get from your LMP. This is so close that perhaps they notice / adjust from scan dates.
Then again I hadn't heard that about long cycle / long pregnancy - worth asking them about that.
SOme of the on line due date calculators, e.g BBC one, allow you to put in conception date instead of lmp - you could try this (putting in your ovulation date or your best guess of when conception happened!).

They all give 21st so match my original EDD I worked out when I got BFP and scan said the same. MW never asked for cycle length or anything and gave me a EDD of 26th using that wheel thing.

I'm not worried about it, more interested really.

I think that tends to be why they measure and date you from a scan which is supposed to be more accurate than ov date. I have a shorter cycle. From ov date DD1 should have been 10th July, scan said 1st and she came on 21st June. DD2 is 28th July with both ov date and scan so not sure how that happened! I think they just come whenever!
