Three wheeler pushchair advice?

Beans1977 · 07/05/2012 09:13

Hello. We are expecting #DC1 in September and are a bit baffled about the amount of pushchairs there are to choose from! We are moving to a very small village in the next month so we figure a three wheeler may be best for the terrain - we plan to do a lot of country walks etc and lots of the roads aren't well made up. Beyond that - I guess something light, easy to manoeuvre and not ridiculously expensive are our only requirements. I've been liking the look of the Quinny Buzz but a couple of friends have told me that they're very big to get through shop doors / on buses and trains. Does anyone have any thoughts? Any help welcome from more experienced mums! x

I had the quinny buzz, i sold it within weeks the wheel at the front had a mind of its own!
I have had a phil & teds sport and i must say its brill, it has been everywhere with me and has took a fair bit of battering and its still here to tell the tale.
Great uphill, grass , uneven pavements and it also fits nice on bus even with extra seat on (also a plus if you have another dc).
Love it wouldnt be without it, the oldies love it and are always surprised to see a baby underneath lol.
They even do a peanut bassinet for it now too

I've got a Phil and Ted's Vibe and I have to say I think it's great! Much better for up-hill-and-down-dale-ing than the Bugaboo I had before! Some good deals to be had on ebay if you haven't got your heart set on a new one. Good luck - it's a pushchair minefield!

I've had the Quinny buzz and the Quinny zapp and hated both. I've now got a Phil and Teds sport and I love it! So easy to handle and folds down really easy. It can be a bit bulky if you only have a small car, and it's worth getting the gunk to fill your inner tubes with to stop you getting any punctures, but overall a fantastic pushchair

melliebobs · 07/05/2012 10:07

I looked at the Quiny Buzz and although it looks nice it was big, not the easiest to put down, v.wide and the pushchair seat looked quite small.

In the end we got a iCandy peach jogger and I LOVE IT! Turns on a sixpence, quick fold down, fits in the boot of my car and my husbands KA. We've had it off road and it's been fine. Carrycot is nice n long so dd will be in it for a while Smile

The ONLY downside to it that ive come across is when you have it in pushchair mode you have to take the seat unit out to collapse it. Price wise we got the pushchair, carrycot, maxi cosi car seat, adaptors for £700

Another one we saw (and I can't remember the model) was a red 3 wheel JANE

You'll probably get more replies about this on the pushchair board.

I second the peach jogger, but as melliebobs says it is expensive. Btw, I think the Jane may have been a slalom or Powertrack.

Do not get a buzz. I have no idea why they're so popular (or why I bought one) as it misses the mark in pretty much every aspect!. Avoid!

But if you want a 3 wheeler with a reversible seat there aren't all that many options. The iCandy peach jogger, jane slalom reverse and out n about nipabout are the only ones springing to mind at the moment.

However, if you would compromise on something where you can use a carrycot till around 6 months and then would have your LO forward facing, then there are many more options. I'd be looking at mountain buggy, easywalker and baby jogger models. Something like the mountain buggy swift or urban, easywalker sky or baby jogger summit.

Also consider 4 wheelers. I think it really varies on what people prefer, but I'm a 4 wheeler person, even for off road, as IMO they are much more stable and less tippy. Look at the Easywalker qtro, the new baby jogger Versa (due around summer iirc) and Easywalker June (due in June/July).

Good luck, pushchairs are an absolute mine field!

Buzz would be useless offroad.

Have used and rated Nipper, Baby Jogger, Mothercare's urban Detour (although not sure if still made) Mountain Buggy and Phil & teds

RetroMum1 · 07/05/2012 18:22

I've had a phil&teds sport and now have he phil&teds dash, I love them both but prefer the dash as the break is on the handle, the explorer and vibe also do this. I agree with the others, they ar amazing to push on all terrains and are easy on/off buses and tubes. Really compact way of having a double as well.

I love my Mountain Buggy but I have Maclaren Quest (umbrella fold) in the boot of the car for shopping trips because I wouldn't fancy putting it in and out of the boot, especially when muddy. Can't beat it for walking with though. I use it for all school runs and dog walks. I love the Quest too for what I use it for. I think there's a danger when trying to get a buggy that's good for everything you end up with one that's good at nothing (got that t-shirt).

Britax B-smart 3 is my current pram/buggy & I'll be sad to swap it for a double later this yr.

We bought it because it rear & forward faces, takes a car seat, has a big hood, is suitable from birth, has removable wheels, is easy to collapse, doesn't have inflatable tyres (solid so no punctures).

We have taken it off-road (local country parks & early spring in the New Forest through a LOT of mud!) and found it good.

It is a bit big, bulky & a little heavy; it takes up most of our Ford Focus' boot, & won't fit in a Corsa's boot, but if you take the wheels off & so on, its ok. It is a little pricey, when you add in the rain cover & car seat as extras, but we've had 2yrs of use from it & we're happy :)

We've gone for iCandy peach jogger to use all terrain. The Which reviews website rated it really highly and we loved the look and feel. Not quite put it to the test yet though (am 37wks today).

Ozziegirly · 08/05/2012 06:20

I've got a Mountain Buggy Swift, and have been pleased with it. We had it with the carry cot at first but DS was never mad keen on it when he was awake - he didn't really like being totally flat. He was fine in it asleep but as soon as he woke he wanted to be out of it.

We turned it front facing when he was about 3 months old, mainly for ease of getting it in and out of car but also because DS immediately was miles happier in it. I would have preferred him rear facing but it didn't come with that option.

It's light, easy to maneuvre and goes on pretty much everything.

gillyweed · 08/05/2012 06:55

baby jogger city mini gt

only just out so you might find it a bit difficult to find too many reviews, its basically an upgrade from the previous model of bjcm with all the minor flaws fixed and forever air types. don't be mis-led by the name you can't actually use it for jogging!

i spent months researching 3-wheelers And I'm pretty happy with my choice! very light, amazing 1 easy fold action, good sturdy wheels that turn on a penny, accessories available (we bought a carrycot for the first few months), decent basket. the actual buggy cost a little over £300 and the carrycot (which doubles as a Moses basket) was £180.

Thanks for all the replies everyone - I had no idea how much choice there was and we seem to get conflicting advice from friends and instore! This is all really helpful. We will get there... Didn't realise there was a Pushchair board - will def check that out too! Thanks again! x

Take any advice you get in a shop with a pinch of salt. Remember they want to sell you something. Generally John Lewis are good but even they are often not all that well informed. A few times I've had to but in and correct them about things! Blush
