I am 13.5 weeks pregnant following 2 MCs and have had scans at 8+0,10+0 and 11+6, all of which show a perfectly fine baby. I have my NHS scan booked for 14+2 (on 10 May) and I am rapidly slowly going round the bend. The problem is that I am not showing/increasing at all. I don't look any bigger, my clothes still fit, etc.

So, please could you lovely ladies tell me your stories about how, following scans where everything looked fine, it was all OK? Bonus points if you also were not showing at this stage :)

Any advice as to how to be a happy calm person as the next scan approaches also welcome!

I have my 20 week scan next week and I'm not really showing yet! Statistically, you know everything will be just fine. And once you have had the scan, try to relax a little - it all goes so fast, you want some time to enjoy it!

shouldIbecrossaboutthis · 04/05/2012 12:59

I literally just got home from my 20 weeks scan (19+5) and the sonographer said my baby was the easiest she has met to scan and that he's very healthy!

I'm currently wearing my size 12 jeans and my bump has been the same since 8ish weeks. I have enough fluid, but not loads which accounts for the small-ish bump.

When I start to worry, I just try to distract myself usually by buying baby stuff!

AAK1797 · 04/05/2012 13:01

With baby 1, I didn't tell work until 16 weeks and even then was not really showing, just a bit thicker round the waistline. I had a totally normal pregnancy, normal scans and now have a large healthy 2 year old.

I am almost glad I didn't have more scans as the weeks leading up to them were by far the most nervewracking of the whole pregnancy each time (and again so far this time round). You can't help but convince yourself there will be something wrong even if there is absolutely no indication of it.... I have no solution other than distraction - work / TV / whatever...

Good luck and I hope all goes well for you!

Hi Tiago - I think you are more nervous about scans when you have been disappointed before. I had a MMC at 14 weeks and I was a real state for my 12w scan this time. I am now 20+1 with my next scan next week - and a very small bump - and am already worrying.

When I get paranoid thoughts I try and and stop myself and rationalise what I am saying - when I think something is wrong with the baby, I go through the list of pros and cons for that thought. There are never any pros or evidence that my thought is based on anything tangible!

As you have seen a healthy baby and HB at all these early scans it would be very unlikely for anything to go wrong now. Good luck!

Truffkin · 04/05/2012 13:06

I didn't get a bump until around the 20 week mark and if you think about it, the baby is so very tiny at 12 weeks pg, it's not always going to start showing. Especially if you don't carry a lot of fluid.

I had scans at 6+0, 12+1 and 20+1 and all was fine. I had a decent bump by the end and my perfectly healthy son is 23 weeks old today! (he's adorable at this precise second as he is soundly asleep Grin)

Sounds like you have no reason to think there is anything wrong so why waste your pregnancy stressing yourself out? You can't affect an outcome by worrying but you can actively choose to celebrate and enjoy every day that you safely carry your baby.

AceOfBase · 04/05/2012 13:08

You shouldn't be showing yet anyway! even though I am at 11 but it is my third with my first I was about 20 weeks before I showed at all.

Tiago · 04/05/2012 13:17

I love you all :)

I like the idea of going through the pros and cons. I'm just not very rational when it comes to being pregnant.I've never got this far before so it is very reassuring to hear from people who didn't show for ages (a colleague of mine is 20 weeks now and started showing at 6 weeks - but she is a very very skinny person which may explain it).

I didn't start showing until about 18 weeks and at 39 weeks am still not huge (though I certainly feel it) - I know it's hard to be rational about these things but everyone is different - I was at the antenatal clinic today and there were women there who were much bigger-looking than me and were only just 30 weeks :)

flipflopper · 04/05/2012 13:41

I was also very very nervous about my 12 week scan. Ive had a mc in the past, so was expecting it again, even though I had a successful 8week reassurance scan!
You just cant help it can you?

You have already had 3 scans which show the heartbeat and that the baby is developing normally! It's really unlikely for anything to be wrong at your next one. Smile

Positiveplus · 04/05/2012 13:50

I can completely understand - I had a couple of very early MC's (probably actually classed as checmical pregnancies) but am now 21 weeks pregnant.
We didnt tell anyone until we were 14 weeks (after the 12 weeks scan) as we were worried something would go wrong.
I was still fairly worried until the 20 weeks scan (last week) but after a very thorough check by both a trainee and fully qualified sonographer (we were in there an hour and every bit of baby was being checked to the detail!) I now feel a lot more relaxed about the whole thing.
Now I know baby is growing fast, developing well, and all is fine, it makes it seem very very real and we now know we'll have a baby at some point in September!!
The chances of anything being / going wrong is very very slim so just try to enjoy your pregnancy - as said above, you cant change the course of things anyway (nature knows best!) and the chances are everything will be perfect, so smile and be happy!! Smile

PS. I've only just started showing and have finally moved over to my maternity clothes. Still doesnt feel like a proper bump as such though, just a bit fatter!! Though I know baby is in there and everything is fine!! Smile

Pascha · 04/05/2012 13:52

I didn't show til well into my 6th month. 3 weeks before DS was born someone asked me if the baby was asleep upstairs as the house was so quiet, they didn't twig I was actually still pregnant. (I did look pregnant, just not huge).

Chunkychicken · 04/05/2012 14:02

I found my pg diary from my DD and wrote on 20wks "Maternity jeans suck". I assume that was the first time I had to wear anything other than my usual jeans...

This time, I'm already on the elastic bobble through the button hole trick and I'm only 11+ weeks.

It is hard not to be anxious and fret over every little thing, especially as you've had such upsetting occurrences before, but very often people don't show much with their first (full term) pg, and the odds are in your favour for having a happy healthy baby at the end!

Doodlegoogle · 04/05/2012 14:03

Your risk of miscarriage following a normal scan at 9 weeks in an asymptomatic pregnancy is now really tiny and no less than the risk of pregnancy loss at 12 or 14 or even 39 weeks. I got really paranoid about it at that stage too as the risk for the whole of the first trimester is so high I wanted to look at the breakdown week by week so I did a lot of research googling and was reassured by that statistic.
I still worry but much much less!

I was also still swimming in a bikini without any bump at all at 22 weeks so don't worry about not showing and ive always measured fine for dates with an uncomplicated pregnancy. Even now I'm still wearing many of my usual size 10 clothes though anything tight shows my increasingly expanding bump :)

Doodlegoogle · 04/05/2012 14:06

I think I mean no more but pregnancy brain and late lunch has addled my thought processes...

ItalaItala · 04/05/2012 14:20

Hello Tiago

As doodle says the risk of miscarriage is very low now (especially after your reasurance scans). I agree tho that the buildup to the scan is quite stressfull and even tho I can feel the baby kicking I worry that something is wrong Blush

I began wearing mat jeans on mon at 29wks and this is DC3! With DD1 I told work at 20wks and nobody had guessed. On the plus side after birth they say you will still look about 4mths pg so that means you will be the envy of lots of people as you "snap back to shape" so quickly - I was back in pre-pg clothes within a week Grin

Aworryingtrend · 04/05/2012 16:05

I am 16 weeks today and only started showing last week and even then I am still wearing mainly normal clothes-in size 10 leggings today! Its just work trousers and skirts that are snug.

I can totally understand your concerns but as others have said having got to the second trimester the risk of the worst happening is very, very low.

Hope the next scan reassures you.

flipflopson5thavenue · 04/05/2012 16:31

the huge majority of women have perfectly normal pregnancies, regardless of what came before, so try to think positively - the odds are in your favour!

I am 28 weeks now and have only really started to show in the last 4 weeks or so. I didn't tell work til I was 21 weeks and they asked me where I'd been hiding it! A lot of women don't show til 5/6 months earliest, especially with a first baby.

I also found that the movements came a lot later than I expected - its only been since about week 24/25 that I could be sure it was baby and not wind...

it will all be fine.

Thumbwitch · 04/05/2012 16:36

Tiago - I am currently 17w and have only just started to really show in the last couple of weeks. Everything was fine at the 12w scan, and I've been panicking as well (3MCs before this pg) - about 10 days ago I started to feel squiggly movements most days though - before that, it had been sporadic so I was fretting wildly.

But 2-3w ago, I was desperately wondering whether or not I should be going for an emergency appt at the EPU to check for a heartbeat because I felt "empty" - despite knowing that the baby had probably just moved around to the back of the uterus so wasn't lying so forward.

I also have hardly put on any weight - I actually lost half a stone in the first trimester because of nausea and loss of appetite; and haven't put any back on yet but the bump is definitely there now! :)

Good luck - FX for you (and me!) and everyone else in this situation.

Plunkett · 04/05/2012 16:55

Try not to worry. With my first I didn't show till about 17 weeks. With this one I had a bit of a bump at 6 weeks like you but am no bigger (probably actually smaller) now at 12 weeks. Your body does a lot of funny things when pregnant and much of the early 'bump' will really be air/gas as your body adjusts - as things settles down towards the end of the first trimester so does this.

Yorkstar · 04/05/2012 17:13

With my first ds my new cohort of students in September did not even realise I was pregnant - da was born the following month! With dd was not properly showing until around 27 weeks plus. Try not to worry xx

Tiago · 04/05/2012 18:36

Hmmm - I like the idea of 'snapping back' in record time.
