Is this true or old wives tale?

Both DM and MIL have said that I shouldn't be picking up 14 month old DS as it could result in mc (am 5 weeks preg). Is this true or just a myth? Obviously I have to do it (putting him into bed/high chair/going up stairs/into buggy etc) so hardly something I can avoid.

Any thoughts/advice?

OWT
obv be careful but many many pregnant women have successfully picked up their toddlers many many times over the years!

littlemissnormal · 02/05/2012 18:20

I'm now 39 weeks, didn't find out until I was 22 weeks and have continued to lug my 3 year old around when needs be.

All I'd say is take it steady and if it feels uncomfortable, don't do it.

Myth.

I was told by consultant when I bled I could take to my bed if I wanted, but it would make no difference to the outcome of the pregnancy.

I took to running up and down stairs holding a toddler when heavily pregnant to induce labour. Didn't work.

That's bollocks. I'd just be careful if you start getting SPD, muscle strains or high blood pressure etc as it'll out extra strain on your body to pick up your toddler.

My MIL told me that if I picked up anything heavy I'd cause the cord to go round DD's neck in the womb. I went to my Midwife during my first pregnancy in tears because of this advice. If i'd have let her, she'd have phoned up MIL and given her a good telling off for spreading nonsense!

Myth- my baby is 4 days old and I have a heavy 3 year old and never stopped picking him up! Even with my gigantic bump! Xx

EdlessAllenPoe · 02/05/2012 18:35

although you could do your back, no harm to the pregnancy.

TodaysAGoodDay · 02/05/2012 18:36

It's a myth, but you could damage your back later in pregnancy. Just use your common sense.

AceOfBase · 02/05/2012 18:39

Well I am clearly doomed to mc if that's the case Hmm since I pick up my dcs (3 and 4) and carry them :o
It's a load of shite don't worry about it :)

Thanks sooooooooo much all. You've really reassured me. My Mum's just been on the phone ranting and raving about how DH should be hiring me a nanny to help with DS (I'm a SAHM with 1 child!) when he 'knows' heavy lifting could 'damage me' Hmm ... Grrrrrr......

My midwife mentioned to me about lifting my 13 month old and said that it's no problem to the baby but could hurt my back so to be careful.

Congratulations!!!

iloveholidays · 02/05/2012 19:09

You might want a nanny when morning sickness kicks in!!!! :)

facejacker · 02/05/2012 19:17

ilove, I think I'd need some help when the lo comes along! Just can't afford it at the moment, and no need to tbh. Lack of finances is just another stick DM can use to metaphorically beat DH with for not providing DS and I with (and I quote) the help and care we deserve (lol), so I didn't actually believe it when she said how 'dangerous' it was. Thought I'd check with my guru mn!

How nice of your mum to offer to come around and help with your toddler and presumably lots of housework so that you needn't do anything strenuous. I'd take her up on it. Wink

Obviously take things easy when you feel you need to and be careful of your back when bending, but I'm sure you'll be fine.
