Itchy palms and feet at 25 weeks

Woke up this morning with severely itching palms of hands and soles of feet. It's now subsided slightly but I've been worrying myself by using Dr Google, which seems to say that this can be a symptom of cholestasis if it occurs after the first trimester. I had severe pre-eclampsia in my first pregnancy, characterised by raised liver enzymes. A little concerned that my liver is just generally a bit useless!

Not sure if I should wait to see if I get more itching over the next day or so before contacting my doctor. Does anyone have any experience of this?

Yep. Could be cholestasis, get it checked out.

strawberrypenguin · 02/05/2012 08:45

I would get it checked, better to be on the safe side with these things

With OC the itching is worse at night, and is characterised by itching on hands and soles of feet, no rash. I would get it checked out.

FluffyJawsOfDoom · 02/05/2012 09:36

Definitely get it checked asap!

Thanks! Will call the doctor this morning. I know that it makes sense to get this sort of thing checked out, but worry about bothering people unnecessarily / blowing things out of proportion. Good to get a sense-check on this!

How did you get on Snowrevolution. I had OC in my last pregnancy. Twenty five weeks is quite early to get it but it can happen and you've certainly got the classic symptoms. Have they done blood tests?

Hope you are feeling a bit better now. If theyv'e not given you anything for the itching, my consultant told me 2 weeks ago it is safe to take piriton in pregnancy at the normal dose (in fact he told me I could take up to double the normal dose)

Doctor ordered me a battery of blood tests to see if it's cholestasis. Waiting for results. No itching this morning though. Does it tend to come and go with cholestasis, or is it more persistent?

Glad you got this checked. It may not actually be OC - as you say, it could be your liver being a bit rubbish. I had itchy palms and soles in my first pregnancy, but didn't mention them to anyone (as they weren't bad) and ended up with severe pre-eclamptic liver failure. (Though DS was born hale and hearty and I went back to normal in super-quick time.)

Hope the results come back OK!
