Waters broke at 28 weeks, anyone managed to get to 34 weeks?

I lost all my waters last Tuesday, I have been in hospital ever since. The fluid is pink and is coming out steadily, filling a pad every few hours. Baby is monitored regularly and seems fine, I'm not contracting but am having dull period like pains. the thing is it seems impossible to get consistent info from the doctors and midwives. I was told I would be in here until the baby is born and now today a doctor has told me I can go home tomorrow, I don't want to, I feel reassured by the monitoring and will be a nervous wreck at home. I keep hearing that if I manage to last until 34 weeks I will be induced, just want to know if anyone has actually managed this? I'm absolutely terrified I'm going to lose my baby.

I can't help personally but there is a poster southsearocks who was in the same situation and held on to 34 weeks.
As for you have they given you steroids or anything which might help the baby? Have you been counselled on your options.
I couldn't leave this unanswered.

MuckingFuddle · 01/05/2012 14:39

Hi Lotstar,
Can you ask to stay in hospital ? The last thing you need now is to be even more anxious and worried. The inconsistent info must be very frustrating can you ask someone to clarify everything and explain why you being given different info. Failing that can you visit the hospital or midwife daily for monitoring ?
You must be coming up to 29 weeks now and had the full course of steroids ?
Every day that your baby is still inside you counts in it's favour so try to take each day at a time rather than focusing on the 34 week mark. The full course of steroids will also help.
Have you had a chance to speak to the staff in NICU ? They may be able to reassure you and advise you on what will happen if you do have baby before 34 weeks. www.bliss.org.uk/ will also have lots of info and support.
My water broke at 30 weeks but I went in to labour the same day and delivered 12 hours after - the fact that nothing has happened with you yet looks promising hang on in there just try to relax and take each day as it comes .

Good Luck x x

Thanks so much for replying, it means a lot. I'm going to make it clear to them that I want to stay in hospital if at all possible. My OH doesn't drive and we have a young daughter so would be pretty stuck trying to get back her when labour does start! I've had the steroid injections, and antibiotics as I'm group b strep positive too!
A doctor from the NICU came to talk to me a few days ago but it's all a bit of a blur now. I've seen that many different doctors and midwives I can't remember who has said what!
Muckingfuddle - you don't mention what happened after delivery, was your baby ok?

I have Twins Lotstart so 2 babies Grin I had a c section and babies were both checked over before they were brought over briefly to say hello before going to NICU.
They were both in hospital for 5 weeks until they could maintain their own temperature, reached a certain weight and feed without a nasal tube.
They were both fine no problems due to prematurity other than being small sleepy and weak - which is normal.

They are now 22 month toddlers doing really well and you wouldnt know they had an early start. 30 weeks sounds early but in the grand scheme of things not dangerously early and there are far less health implications then if you have a baby before 28 weeks.

Staying in hospital sounds like the best thing for you and your baby hope your getting lots of RL support.

Keep us posted and Good Luck x

hi Lostar, sounds like you're in the right place, I hope your bubba can stay inside as long as possible - the steroids will help his/her lungs & give the best possible chance - 28 weeks is a good gestation in terms of survival & long-term outcomes.

I had a 29 weeker (but he measured 24/5 weeks) - at that gestation it was considered that a section was safer than vaginal delivery, and he was whisked away quickly to NICU - I didn't hear him cry, but I understand that some babies do at that stage.

After being stitched up, I was wheeled along to NICU to see him (still in the hospital bed!) but was very shocked & tearful. It was a week or so before I was able to hold him.

It might be an idea to ask if you could have a tour of the NICU? Another thing to have a think about is a good breast pump, as breastmilk can really help to reduce the risk of a nasty bowel condition called NEC, which can happen in prems. As mentioned previously, the Bliss website is a good source of information & support - they have a careline & lots of information booklets

Good luck, am hoping things go as well as they possibly can

My waters went at 30 weeks and dd was born at 32+2
My waters went at 22 weeks and ds was born at 27+5

Its very possible to hang on for a decent amount of time :) good luck

bump4 · 01/05/2012 22:31

Hi just to say my waters went at 27, 24 and 18 weeks and my 3 managed to stay put until 34/35 weeks. I leaked continously with all 3 of mine, and was scanned every fortnight.

Its a really good sign that nothing has happened so far.

Just keep drinking lots of fluid and try to rest up as much as possible.

Good luck.

Thanks so much for your replies, feeling much more positive now! Been over a week now, fingers crossed will last a bit longer, 30 weeks on Friday!

Good to hear your feeling more positive. Are you still in hospital ?

lotstar · 08/05/2012 23:21

Yes still here, still hanging on! Will be 31 weeks on Friday. Bleeding a lot and keep on getting rushed to delivery ward for monitoring, very stressful but worth it to keep little one in for as long as poss!

hello lotstar that is good news that you are at 31 weeks. are your fluid levels okay around baby? guess your being monitored really really well. do they know why you are having bleeding? hang in there baby star!

duchesse · 09/05/2012 00:04

You want Southsea and her epic US prem birth thread from last year. Basically her waters went at 27 weeks while she was on holiday in the US and her little boy held on for a further 7 weeks afair.

Good luck. It is certainly possible. The medics will do everything they can to keep your little one in as long as possible but if early birth becomes inevitable, at least your LO will have had steroids etc and will be in the best possible position. Crossing everything for you.

CointreauVersial · 09/05/2012 00:05

I immediately thought of Southsearocks, who went through the same thing while stuck in the US. Hope she's doing OK, haven't seen her around.

OP, all the best, stay positive, take each day as it comes, and keep that babe in the oven for as long as you can!

homeaway · 09/05/2012 14:40

Here is the link to southsea's epic story star, it has a happy ending :) :

Hope you're OK, OP.

lotstar · 13/05/2012 17:20

Thanks for that, will def have a look at that thread. Still hanging on, still in hospital and still losing fluid and blood! Had a scan last thurs and the baby's growth is right on track, the only thing wrong is the lack of fluid. As quick as the baby makes it it just seems to come straight out. Just wish I would stop bleeding, no matter how much they tell me baby is fine etc I can't help but panic when I see all the blood...

Hi Lotstar - glad to hear that you (and bubba) are hanging on - every day inside makes a big difference to your bubba - and I know (having done the waiting game in hospital myself) how hard it is for you.

Stay as strong as you can - you are doing a tremendous job in a very difficult situation - take care of yourself xx

PoppyS34wantssleep · 13/05/2012 18:48

Oh lostar, you have my sympathy. I'm also in hospital with bleeding and know how scary it is.

The first time I was in there was a lady on the same ward who was leaking fluid at 28weeks. I saw her yesterday when I was being admitted and she was at 34 weeks, so it is possible.

lotstar · 05/07/2012 12:21

Just a note for anyone who is in similar situation and has come across this thread via google... I managed to last until 31 + 5 before going into spontaneous labour. Had lovely baby boy weighing 3lb 13oz on 16 May. He spent just under 3 weeks on nicu before taking him home, that was a month ago now and I'm currently sat on the sofa feeding him. There is light at the end of the tunnel!
