hi ,
just had my consultant ring to say there taking me in on the 24 th of may to remove my 18 cm ( at the moment ) ovary cyst , its been getting bigger not smaller .
the cyst was found at a early 9 week scan measuring 10 cm then again at 12 weeks 16 cm .

if its not bad enough luck but in my last pregnancy i had my appendix removed at 18 weeks , my baby girl was fine , thank god .but am i pushing my luck now for a positive outcome ?!?

i also know how much pain im going to be afterwards :S

just wonder'd if anybody has been through the same ?? or had any operation while pregnant and had a positive out come ??

im just praying beans (baby) is made of tough stuff .

i know my last baby was fine but my hormones are making me one big massive worry bag .

I don't have experience of this, but didn't want to leave you without a reply. It must be a really worrying time, but try to hang on to the following:

a) Your consultant has recommended this course of action. If the benefits didn't outweight the risks, he would not have done this.

b) There is no such thing as "pushing your luck" by having this operation - it is totally unrelated to your appendix being done last time. You know that logically, there is no reason one would have any impact on the other.

I do know how easy it is to worry (have been a neurotic mess at many times this pg), and I really feel for you having this done, especially when you had your appendix out last time. It is massive bad luck. Can you speak to your midwife / GP / consultant about it, and just get them to go through the risks / benefits with you to set your mind at rest?

Good luck, I hope you have a speedy recovery.

I had a 10 inch cyst removed 11 years ago when I was 13/14 weeks with my second son. I had to be cut from my pubic bone to my belly button, but recovery wasn't awful, and easier than my recent c-section.

Awwwww, no experience if this but that sounds rotten :( I'm sure they'll make a fuss and take very good care of you :)

Wish you a speedy recovery Thanks

thankyou .

i'll be glad when its all done , and i can really start to enjoy this pregnancy with out allways worrry'ing what this cyst is doing .

i have spoke to my midwife but she seemed to know very little about it , but my consultant has been fab , and answer'd all my questions over the phone yesterday :)

Hi mad

I too had an ovarian cyst (dermoid) removed while pregnant, about 19 weeks I think, it had twisted/bled (they're still not sure) and I was in agony so I had a few days of morphine whilst they decided what to do and then the op.

The operation itself was fine, recovery was painful afterwards as you forget how much you need your abdomen for movement, things like stairs/turning over in bed etc hurt quite a bit for a few days so do make plans to take it as easy as possible.
It was much better after a week, hurt very rarely after 2 weeks and I was back at work after 3 just to give you a timescale.

Remember lots of big comfy knickers to go over the scar and same with yoga trousers/pj's

I also got a few extra scans to check on baby which was a nice bonus - he's 15 months now and fine just to reassure.

Errmm...not sure what else to tell you, PM me if there is anything you want to know though

EddieIzzardIsMine · 02/05/2012 10:32

Oh, and remember to ask for/pack laxatives! Do not need to be straining with sore stomach muscles! Same for wind, dont worry if you dont break wind for a few days after the operation but can feel it 'bubbling', apparently its normal....

ellangirl · 02/05/2012 10:51

Hi, I have just had (2 weeks ago) an operation to remove twisted ovary- I was 13 +2 weeks. I had a scar like a CS across bikini line. Mine was an emergency like eddie so I had a lot of morphine etc before because of the pain. As yours is routine you'll have a much easier time of it. It is sore for the first week especially, so make sure you've got lots of support planned. Pain relief afterwards is mostly codeine and paracetamol, although they can give you morphine and synthetic versions of morphine like tramadol or sevradol which work well. Def agree with not straining- the operation gives you terrible trapped wind and constipation! I would ask for lactulose immediately which is like a thick liquid, it's a stool softener rather than a laxative. You need to be careful about laxatives as they can cause uterine contractions.
I got loads of scan in the days afterwards, so that is reassuring. Also bear in mind you won't be able to drive for a few weeks, which is a pain!

Any questions please ask...

hi, thankyou SO much ! its nice to hear off others that have gone through this .

im feeling very lucky so far that im not in pain , people do keep asking me that and i have packed a hospitail bag in case something twist's in the mean time .

im really pleased to here you get lots of extra scans , as after my appendix i got none , wish worried me sick about the baby .

the husband has taken 2 weeks off to help with the other kiddies .

and the consultant has told me painrelif with be much better this time , all they would give me after having my appendix out was paracotomal :( . and i'll defo rember to ask for some lactulose.

just hopeing and praying i heal quick and babys ok .

also ladies can i ask are both your scars low down ?? as my consultant told me id have a cut under my belly button ?? would be better if it was lower , been very lucky and dont have any strech marks but a massive appendix scar , didnt like the idea of yet another big scar so high up .

again THANKYOU .

Mine is low down, like a c-section scar, looks like this (thats not mine btw!) -

<a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?q=cesarean+scar&um=1&hl=en&rlz=1R2ADRA_enGB476&biw=1280&bih=582&tbm=isch&tbnid=4XxI-5fC-gfFQM:&imgrefurl=csectionscar.net/&docid=ccKkNKjrVvEq7M&imgurl=csectionscar.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/scar2.jpg&w=640&h=480&ei=3Q-hT-blJ8n-8QPc99C5CA&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=561&vpy=204&dur=1483&hovh=194&hovw=259&tx=85&ty=79&sig=102308532174409927902&page=1&tbnh=175&tbnw=245&start=0&ndsp=10&ved=1t:429,r:2,s:0,i:83" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">scar

Hope it goes well for you, remember to get plenty of rest

ellangirl · 02/05/2012 13:52

Mine is c section scar too, but they might need to go vertically from under belly button to get better access depending on position of cyst and which ovary it is.
Good luck for the operation, you'll be fine. They wouldn't be doing it if it wasn't safe, and completely necessary.
