Brown/pink spotting 13+1 - need reassurance

Well after making it all the way through the first trimester without a hitch, seems I'm starting the second trimester with some spotting [:-(]

It has been throughout today when I wipe and is pinky/browny tinged mucus.I have very very mild cramps too. I keep reading that it can be normal but am still worried and am going to the docs.

Does anyone have any experience of spotting in late 1st/early second trimester where everything was fine?

Hi, I had spotting from 7 weeks with my ds2. It peaked at 15weeks with a biggish bleed. It was because the bottom edge of my placenta had come away a bit. I had a low lying placenta with both my ds. It caused light needing and spotting until my bumps grew and the placenta moved out of the way. It was reassuring when I started to feel the baby move as then I knew it was ok. It is very worrying whatever the reason. Spotting us more common than we realise. I hope everything is ok for you. Do get checked out to be on the safe side. Hugs.

Thanks. It wasn't much and seems to have stopped for the moment but it has knocked me sideways. Have been overly anxious and was just start to relax after reaching 12 weeks and having my scan and this seems to have set me back into constant worry mode Sad

Pregnancy is such a worrying time. Just try to relax. Are you seeing the doctor tomorrow? I hope they can reassure you and that it is all ok as it was for me. Thinking of you.

Just wanted to chip in and say I had two spells of bleeding in my pregnancy - the second was I think about 16 weeks and went on for about 2 weeks. I remember feeling terrified.
The midwives weren't very concerned and all was well - my DD is a year old now. :)
You are doing the right thing getting checked if you are worrying - but it is surprisingly common and if its stopped that's a good sign.
I seem to remember the brown colour was less of a concern to the midwives than when it was bright red. ( I had that too!)
Hope you get some reassurance at the doctors.

Hi OP how are things today?

DueinSeptember · 01/05/2012 20:57

In my last pregnancy I had spotting from 15 weeks to 24 weeks off and on. All was ok in the end. No real reason for it, was possible cervical erosion.

Have you had your scan yet?

Had a bit of spotting in this pregnancy too (last week), but that was probably due to having sex as it happened the day after. So we're going to avoid it until the baby is born. Have you done anything like this that may have irritated your cervix?

Hope it has stopped today - it's so worrying when it happens.

Nothing today I'm pleased to report! So relieved.

I went to my GP who was fab and took it all very seriously without panicking me so I feel very reassured and much happier today. He organised a scan for Friday - a week after my 12 week scan! - to check there's nothing untoward. Hopefully there will continue to be no more spotting and I'll feel reasonably confident going there and will see a wriggly baby again.

Thanks for your reassurance ladies, it really ,really helped Smile

So nice to hear of a kind and helpful GP and an extra scan too! Glad it's all looking on for you. Let us know how you get in on Friday Smile

Hope you are ok?

Hi tiredteddy - all was good. They could see no trace of any bleeding inside the uterus, baby looked active with strong heartbeat and I am hugely relieved.

They said it could have been due to cervical erosion which is nothing to worry about. GrinGrin

...and now I need to RELAX!

I had spotting/light bleed on and off from about 10 days from week 27. Had numerous checks - including an overnight stay and steroid jobs for the baby's lungs to be on safe side - and baby is fine and cervix is fine and placenta is high and fine - one doc suggested it could be cervical erosion but they can never be sure. The blood looked like LOADS to me and was really scary but it was only ever on wiping and the midwives were very sweet but were basically suggesting that they need to see a much heavier bleed before they worry... Which I guess is reassuring in itself!

Seems its Just One Of Those Things and they never find out what causes it. None of the docs or midwives were ever concerned with the amount of blood, and I never had any pain or cramps. One MW told me she bled on and off throughout her second pregnancy and was in the hospital every couple of days...! She went on to have healthy baby at full term.

I haven't had any more for about 2-3 days now but am still holding my breath and knicker checking every 5 mins, but am slowly relaxing. If it is cervical erosion then it could come back or continue on or off, but as long as I have no pain, the bleeding doesn't get any worse and I continue to feel the baby move, the docs are not worried.

Am having a growth scan next Friday so will ask sonographer to have an extra check and the placenta maybe to see it its all looking good.

It has sucked the joy out of pregnancy a bit but I keep telling myself that this happens all the time..and I know that there is nothing wrong with me or the baby.

Hope you have a great rest of pregnancy!

tiredteddy · 05/05/2012 09:53

Glad all was ok, and now relax Grin

Pumpster · 05/05/2012 09:55

Glad all is okay, I had lots of scans due to bleeding with my last 2 dc and all was well, so worrying though!

Whysoserious · 05/05/2012 12:15

Thanks ladies. It is scary but I think if it happens again now I'll be much more relaxed about it (hmmm...we shall see Wink ). I like to think I will be anyway.

I think I got off very lightly (literally) - it must be so worrying for women that bleed all the way through. such a pain as well!

Glad you're feeling better. If it's any consolation I am 18+1 and started getting brown spotting a fortnight ago. Been to EPU 3 times with it and they have been fab but I seem to have developed a little polyp on my cervix which might be the culprit. Apparently the pregnancy hormones can cause them.

It is a worry - know exactly what flipflop means about sucking joy out of pregnancy - but they only seem to get worried about (lots of) red blood, clots, abdominal cramping in mid abdomen, rather than brownish blood / discharge. Hope everything goes well for you x

MessyTerrier · 05/05/2012 22:02

I had the same thing with all three of my children and they are all fine. The light cramping sensation was apparently due to uterine expansion.

Try not to worry. Good Luck! Smile
