Can I take a HPT 5 days before AF and get a correct result?

Hi to all,

I am a mum of two already but never tested for either of these until I'd missed a period.

I am due on in 5 days. But for the last two days I have been experiencing a constant dull ache and mild cramps, no spotting though. I've also been very windy! Blush And previous to this very tired.

My last period was on the 7th April, this was a week early. From this I worked out I should have ovulated around the 21st. Me and my husband had sex on the 14th and somewhere around the time of ovulation also, although we used condoms he does not put then on straight away :-/

Anyway my question is if I were ro buy a test do you think it would show a true result? Don't really have spare money to waste this week.

Any advice would be great!

Short answer - probably not.

You won't get a false positive, so if the result is pregnant, then you can trust it. But if the result is negative then you'll have no idea whether you're not pregnant, or whether you are but your hormone levels aren't high enough to detect yet.

So best not to waste your money. Is there any reason why you really want to know this week?

how many days is your cycle usually?

if it's usually fairly short you might get a correct result earlier.

it sounds like you expect it to be 28 days though, in which case you're less likely to get a true result at 9DPO (i.e. 5 days before period due).

having said that, i got an extremely faint positive at 9DPO. so faint that i thought i was imagining it. tested again at 11DPO and got a strong positive.

randomly, the 9DPO test was still in the bin, and when i fished it out Blush, the line had developed further and was nearly as dark as the 11DPO test.

The bog standard Clearblue + tests say they're 99% accurate the day your period is due, down to 50-something % 4 days before iirc, so you could get an accurate result, but a negative result doesn't necessarily mean there's no pregnancy.

Poundland tests not bad btw, and you get 2 in a pack.
