Would appreciate and experienced mummy advice please. Do I need all of them or is one better than the others? Think I'm now finding things to worry about Blush

IMHO, all you really need is a bouncy chair. We had one similar to this. It's useful to have a safe place that you can put the baby down when you need to, and the chair is good as they can still see what's going on.

We also a swing thing from Mothercare and it was shit. I had hoped it would gently rock DS to sleep but it was noisy and mechanical and a total waste of money.

We also had a doorway bouncer that we got very little use out of as it took two people to get DS into it.

Oh, and we had a Bumbo too -that was fantastic. But some people don't get on with them at all.

My advice would be to buy a cheap bouncy chair and then see if you can borrow some of the other things to try out on your baby.

I'm just going to have a bouncy chair. I'm not sure if you even need that if you only have the baby though, I'm just getting one because I'll need to be able to put the baby down somewhere when I'm looking after my other children.

I don't think anything else is necessary, although if you want to spend your money on it...

(having said that, if once your baby's born and it has really bad colic/reflux etc you do what you need to to get some respite from the crying etc, and then I've known people swear by the rocking chairs).

We got a bouncy chair from mamas n papas. £27 and it's got a vibrate. Dd loves it

Buy a cheap bouncy chair so you've somewhere to put the baby, and then if you have a colicky, hard to settle baby, think about getting a swing - was a lifesaver with our dd, but I think they are fairly useless for most babies, so I would only get one if needed.

I got a lovely basic bouncy chair from TK Maxx for dd1, and I'll be digging it out for dd2. It was a Cossato one and it played tunes and vibrated (which was the only thing that settled her when the colic kicked in) and had little soft toy bar but it wasn't a fancy one, and it was really reasonably priced. I was Shock in toys r us today and saw a bouncer for £90, and that was reduced! You'll only get a few months use out of it so there's no need to go mad!

My dd never liked the bouncy chair, I was given one, but won't get one for this baby. Dd did love the swing though. She would happily sit there while we ate dinner, which made me happy!
I didn't have a bumbo or a Bouncer. Most of the time I just carried her in a sling.

HamblesHandbag · 29/04/2012 20:02

don't forget you can't use the door swings until they can hold their heads up properly - 4 months ish. Bouncy chairs are most useful for somewhere for them to sit in safety while you go for a wee/eat your tea/put washing in etc

In the early days you probably won't need anything so see how things go once baby arrives, we got a bouncer chair (not a noisy one - she didn't like those) when our daughter was around 2,5 months because she wanted to see what's going on and I could have her in the bathroom when I was showering etc
A month ago we bought her a door bouncer because all she wants to do now is bounce on our knees :) and at over 8 kg it gets painful to hold her for more than 10 minutes :) She absolutely loved it from day one! But my friend's baby didn't like it at all so I would say try before you buy :)

EggsMichelle · 30/04/2012 06:52

I would love one of those door bouncers, but I can imagine the dog charging at it like a toy and the cat biting its feet!

BikeRunSki · 30/04/2012 07:10

My both loved their cheap bouncy chair (rainbow stripes, JojoMamanBebe) and hated their cousins ' one with vibration and music. Bumbo quite useful later, although DS worked out how to get out of it very quickly. Both have loved door bouncer but the absolute best 'baby depository' has been a Jumperoo. We are lucky that friends have lent us one because they are £££. But DD -6 months - absolutely loves it.

CakeInMyFace · 30/04/2012 10:14

I had a bouncy chair and it was brilliant. It was lightweight so I could carry DD in one arm and the chair in the other when I needed to do cooking / laundry / etc. She loved sitting in it (even used to take it to the park and things). It was only £30 from Mothercare - I wouldn't bother with the swings. Some babies don't actually like them either! I tried DD in one once and she cried the whole time she was in it.
