Not me Tanya but my five year old son was recently diagnosed with this. It has been a steep learning curve for all of us, as I'm sure it was for you at 8.

I know that hunkermunker had gestational diabetes so I'm sure she'd be interesting to chat to.

Congratulations on your pregnancy. How is it going? What changes have you had to make if any to your management of your diabetes?

Its going very well so far thanks. Your son will be fine.I went through a phase of not wanting to do my bloodtests from about 13 - 16, but then i realised i had to do them at least once or twice a day so reluctantly did them, eventually i grew up and knew i needed to look after myself.Apart from that i think i've handled it well. The only changes i've had to make in my pregnancy is eating little and often and making sure i eat the right foods. They keep a very close eye on you at the hospital anyway. Is your little boy on insulin? If so, has he learnt to do his own injections?

I'm glad to hear your pregnancy is going well. My appetite was all over the place in pregnancy. Have you had to make adjustments to your insulin or just check your blood sugar more often?

Yes he is insulin dependent. He started doing his own injections pretty quickly, but seems to prefer us to do them again at the moment. It was as if he needed to prove to himself that he could do it, then once he mastered it he felt OK again.

He has been a bit angry lately and emotionally but I think he's coming through it.

It's inspiring to hear about adults, like yourself, who've grown up with it and are fine.

Good luck with your pregnancy.

By the way, diabetes seems to be quite rare. I've yet to meet another RL diabetic (apart from the ones I've seen at clinic). Have you found this, or have I just been unlucky so far?

Hi Tanya - yes, I had gestational diabetes and controlled it with my diet - so not quite your situation.

Hoxtonchick takes insulin when pg but is diet-controlled the rest of the time, I believe. She was a fantastic source of advice and support when I was pg.

Congratulations and hope all goes well for you - you'll be monitored closely, I am sure.

I'm having to check my blood sugar all the time. I do at least 6 a day. They changed my night time insulin and they expected me to need more of it.... but it worked out i had to reduce it dramatically.Although it now is creeping up slowly.
Your son will go through those anger stages for a while on and off....well if he is anything like i was... i used to say Why Me? all the time because i'm the only person in my family who's got it. Got 3 sisters and 1 brother. Its good though that he's had a go at doing his injections himself. The only thing that he'll have to get used to is the not eating chocolate and sweets that he may have enjoyed. At least he's young enough... i can still remember the last time b4 i was diagnosed having a full mars bar.Don't miss it at all now.It did me a favour.
For Hunkermunker: Did you have any trouble at the birth?
