Cervical polyp in Pregnancy (17 weeks)

Hi all,

Have had on and off problems with 'vaginal pressure' / odd discharges over last few weeks (swabs came back clear of infection), then 2 incidents of brown spotting in the last week. Tonight after speculum exam doc said I had a tiny cervical polyp which may have caused the spotting.

Has anyone else had a cervical polyp in pregnancy? And did it cause any problems? "Dr Google" (:o) seems to suggest that some cause no problems but others can get bigger and bleed quite a lot so was just wondering if anyone has experience of this? Please feel free to PM if you don't want to share with the whole world :)

Im 12+6 and gybae saw a small polyp poking out the entrance to the cervix- she took out a piece there and then to send to histology. (Kind of wish she explained to me what she was doing before she did because before I knew it she was showing it to me on a piece of tissue paper). I am now passing brown gunk for the last two days (I was told I would see spotting for a few days after) but this is not helping my anxiety at all.

@ArthurandJessie Hi, came across your comment .. I am 23 weeks pregnant with a cervical polyp protruding out of my vulva.. I was told to have it removed but I read some stories online about how it could cause miscarriage or pre term labour😰 I am really scared... dont know what to do..

ArthurandJessie · 23/04/2020 14:37

Hi love ! Sorry your in this situation ! You will have to have a good chat with your doctor about the position of your polyp and what they think the risks are ! In your case your nearly at viability which is good news ! When do they want to remove it ?

Ppmom · 24/04/2020 17:46

@ArthurandJessie I am due august 15 .. they want to remove it sometime in July.. God!! Been so stressed out since the last two days... also this may be TMI but the polyp seems to pop out during no 2 otherwise I goes back up or something.. This whole thing is giving me anxiety!!Sad

ArthurandJessie · 24/04/2020 18:36

Well that's good you will be really near the end of your pregnancy if there are any issues ! It's so horrible isnt it :( mine did that to start with then it stuck out all the time and I had to wiggle to make it go back up whenever I sat down 🤢 try not to stress July will soon be here and itll be gone for good ! If it's making you super uncomfortable go back again I had to go back several times for them to do anything ! I dread to think how big it would be now if I'd just left it like they wanted but I had mine much earlier than yours x

@ArthurandJessie I read online that it the female hormone estrogen is responsible for the polyps during pregnancy and that sometimes it goes away on its own... how I wish !😫 Before pregnancy I never had a problem or showed any symptoms at all... What about you?

ArthurandJessie · 25/04/2020 13:33

Yes same ! My doctor said it was the rush of hormones and mine developed so quickly having twins it was double trouble 😅 I do have a family history of polyps though both my nan and mum had to have some removed but they were alot older than me !

ArthurandJessie · 25/04/2020 13:34

Is this your first baby ? I was also told alot of them fall off during birth 🤢

Ppmom · 27/04/2020 20:54

@ArthurandJessie Hi! Sorry for the late reply... yes this is my first baby.. the doctor told me that if the polyp is not removed before delivery then it might cause excessive bleeding during birth that is vaginal birth.. Also standing for quite some time makes mine pop out and bleed a little.. Btw did you have slight pressure in the uterus when u had the polyps? Today i felt a little pressure almost like tugging feeling in the uterus.. trying to stay calm but it is just a challenge to maintain my coolConfused

Hi - I realise this is an old post now but came across it in my searches. I had a polyp in my previous pregnancy (undiagnosed) which caused a lot of bleeding during vaginal delivery.

I now have another polyp and am pregnant again. The consultant this time is saying polyps do no cause bleeding. Just wondering if anyone delivered their baby naturally and whether there were complications? Or if anyone was advised to opt for an alternative route.

Shanbeer · 04/08/2020 16:34

Exactly what I’m going through.. feeling very uncomfortable and disgusting sometimes.. I wanted it to be removed so badly.. but doctor said to wait till it fall off by itself.. but it’s so irritating.. unable to move..

Shanbeer · 04/08/2020 16:36

Really that’s a very good news .. I feel so uncomfortable and disgusting .. in how many weeks they removed it?

Prettylittlelady · 05/08/2020 08:00

I’m 30 weeks pregnant and I have a cervical polyp - it was first found at 21 weeks when I had some light spotting. I was checked and sent for a scan and all fine. Then had another slight bleed around 10 days later - again it was confirmed it was the polyp.
Since then I’ve not had any more bleeds/spotting but obviously if I do I’ll go straight in. All seems ok for now I've been told it’s only around 1cm and they said they have seen them up to 6 before in pregnancy.

I had a cervical polyp. Caused bleeding at 6 & 8 weeks and then fell off on its own at 13 weeks. Not had any bleeding or problems since.

Hi, i know this is an old thread but i’m looking for advice too!!

I had a bleed at 10 weeks, spent the night in a&e, had a scan, baby was fine, bleeding went down as unknown cause.

I continued to bleed weekly but every time i phoned, they told me to monitor, if i started to fill pads to return to a&e (never happened, was just spotting so i monitored at home) although i was spotting at least once a week!

Fast forward to 20 weeks, i had another bigger bleed so phoned maternity triage and refused to leave until something was done about it. They did a speculum exam and found i had a cervical polyp, they told me it was definitely causing the bleeds. I was referred to a specialist for a colposcopy.

I am now 24+6, i had my appointment with the specialist who performed the colposcopy at 24+1. He said its nowhere near as big as he thought and that he was tempted to remove it there and then but refrained due to the risk of pre-term labour.

He is now saying he wants me back in at 34 weeks to remove it, it may need to be done in theatre as he is worried it may bleed excessively and will need stitches. He doesn't want me to give birth naturally whilst it is still there as he is worried it may bleed excessively then and make birth more traumatic.

I’m now petrified i’m going to end up having this baby at 34 weeks, i’m a first time mum. He said it’s more likely to cause pre-term labour because its hanging from the entrance to the cervix so when removed, the cervix may end up being stimulated enough to open. I know as a doctor he wouldn’t suggest removing this at 34 weeks with the risk of pre-term labour if the baby wasn’t going to be safe, however it is really freaking me out!!

MummyWebber · 20/09/2020 14:48

I had my little boy 8 weeks ago now after having 2 cervical polyps.

Natural labour with my first baby ended up very complicated because the polyp caused a lot of bleeding. I ended up in theatre straight after baby was born, with heavy blood loss and lots of uncomfortable stitching backing together of my cervix.

Polyp was then removed 6 weeks postnatally but I had another 2 appear by the time I was pregnant with baby number two.

This time round I opted for a cesarean. I was not given the option for removing the polyps because of increased risk of bleeding as blood supply to the cervix is greater when pregnant - however I guess it’s a more controlled way of causing bleeding rather than taking the risk of bleeding during labour.

This thread has been so helpful! I’m 13w+3 and I was told I have a cervical polyp the previous week. I was called in the doctors office after notifying them of light spotting during wiping every couple of days. They immediately diagnosed the source as a very tiny polyp. However since my examine I’ve been spotting daily. Still very light and only with wiping but still very concerning. I go in for a regular prenatal appointment tomorrow but I’m going to ask a million questions after reading this thread to see my options. My hope is to have a water delivery and NOT a cesarean. I’ll keep you guys updated for any other mums out there experiencing these pesky polyps since there doesn’t seem to be any other information out there for us!

Hi, I’ve also got a cervical polyp found around 16 weeks. On/off issues with spotting (never any fresh red blood) and yellow discharge. Had a few high swabs and low swabs, as well as blood tests but no signs of infection. Has any one noticed that it’s very random when it might cause a problem? As in I am not doing anything strenuous and it will just come on? I phone the maternity department to inform them of the spotting and told to keep an eye on then it disappears but comes back randomly a few days or a week later? Any advice or experiences welcome. I just often get told it can happen in pregnancy but I never feel massively reassured.

Hi all,

I've had a cervical polyp diagnosed by my consultant yesterday - I'm 36+2 days pregnant at the moment. She gave me the option of having it removed or just leaving it alone as thankfully it's not caused any symptoms or bleeding, but she did warn me that it might cause more bleeding in labour/after birth or might cause issues/bleeding if I was wanting to have sweeps prior to labour.

I've decided to have it removed - I'm already at a high risk of bleeding as unfortunately I haemorrhaged after having a TOP for fetal abnormality with my little boy last year.

She's got me booked in for tomorrow afternoon - hopefully it all goes well as it's only a small polyp (about 1cm or so from what I can feel). I figure even if it did end up triggering labour at least I'm almost classed at term at this point so it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world...
