I am eating so much rubbish food

Bleugh. I am pregnant with my second baby - 6 weeks. With my first pregnancy I felt great, really energetic, no sickness, no symptoms at all. I ate loads of salads and fruit and good protein and felt really smug and pleased with how well I was feeding this foetus...

Well this pregnancy and I feel hungover permanently so I am eating basically nothing but white carbs and crap - pasta, chips, chicken kiev, big cheese sandwiches.

I even had a sausage and egg mcmuffin yesterday and my god was it amazing.

This is likely to pass isn't it, and I can go back to my normal fairly healthy diet?

The one saving grace is that my metabolism goes into overdrive when I'm pregnant and despite stuffing myself on all the worst things, I haven't put on a single kilogram.....

I was exactly the same. I'm vegetarian and my diet is usually full of fruit and things. In my first trimester I had awful morning sickness though and lived off bread, chips and bland pasta. 35 weeks now and I'm well and truely back on the fruit and veg and in fact completely put off the idea of carb-rich foods.

I've only put on 16lbs in my whole pregnancy so far, so I'm sure you'll be fine :)

steben · 28/04/2012 08:30

I am exactly the same - the crap I am consuming is awful I am basically living on baked potatoes, cheese and tomato pizza, pasta and sugary cereals. The only saving grace is I am eating a lot of fresh fruit - which probably isnt that good because it is full of sugar. However this is my second and I was exactly the same with first - lost everything I put on and have a very healthy toddler. Sometimes I think you just need to try and not worry and as long as you are attempting some balance and taking vitamins etc...it will be fine.

PricklyPickle · 28/04/2012 08:31

Hang on, I thought being pregnant was the ultimate excuse to eat rubbish! You enjoy your Mcmuffin Ozzie, you deserve it.

nannyl · 28/04/2012 09:03

I had an HG pregnancy...

in the early months i did an entire month where i ate no fruit / veg at all in any form (I couldnt)

For ages they only things that passed my lips (though often repassed my lips on the way out soon after) were things like red coca cola (bleugh, hate that stuff) Mars bars / kit kat chunkys / iced finger buns / ribena / ribena ice lollies, bought cheese sandwiches

(Normally i am a health freek who would only eat fresh delicious / healthy home made food)

towards the end i couldnt get enough water!!!!!

When i was in hospital, the midwifes said it doesnt matter what you eat, if it stays down its fine

MockCroc · 28/04/2012 09:27

I ate so many quavers in the first few weeks I would be too surprised if I gave birth to one! Veggies I normally love (inoffensive things like brocoli and onion) made me feel nauseous. It passed in the second trimester and I went back to normal. Except I couldn't get enough sweets to supplement my diet. Now in my third tri it is still Pretty normal, actually i am loving fresh fruit, salad & veg, except for craving chocolate around the edges. I just had a packet of rolos for breakfast Hmm! Eat what you can and once you can stomach fruit and veg again you can catch up on the good stuff!

Vessel · 28/04/2012 11:29

same here - I keep intending to eat some fruit or veg or ANYTHING REMOTELY HEALTHY. At the moment, the thought makes me literally sick.

Olivetti · 28/04/2012 12:32

Same here 6 + 4 today, baby 2. But I am bloated up like a balloon, and just feel FAT. I haven't done any exercise for about a month, usually I swim a few times a week. Am hoping if I start that gain, I'll at least tone up...

oikopolis · 28/04/2012 16:11

i was exactly the same. am now 22 weeks and haemoglobin/iron levels are perfect (i was SHOCKED when the Dr told me that) and have only put on the weight of the baby/waters.

listen to your body. i ate absolute junk in enormous quantities until 10ish weeks, when ms struck and i could barely touch food. i had put on a little bit of weight by then, so it acted as a buffer, and when i got to the end of the 1st trimester my weight was the same as before i was pg (which is exactly what the guidelines say it should be at that stage).

am now able to eat a wider variety of foods and the weight is going on at exactly the right rate.

as long as you're exercising, and the food you're eating is making you feel satisfied and comfortable, keep going.

luckysocks · 28/04/2012 21:05

I've been rubbish all the way through this time. I am sorry to say that I put the weight on too, in spades. Although I did lose it all again without trying too hard after DS.

I simply can't get enough sugar. DH is more of a foody than me and thanks to him I do eat healthy stuff around the edges of my main, chocolate and confectionary based diet. I crave pints of coke but bravely manage to substitute with the much healthier alternative of orangina.

I genuinely worry about gestational diabetes and I try to be sensible, but this baby DEMANDS sugar Confused

Ozziegirly · 29/04/2012 03:30

I would probably kill for an orangina - I fancy it SO much but can't find it anywhere over here (Oz). Have been having lucozade instead.

Earlier today I stood at the fridge and ate 4 laughing cow portions in a row. Now having french bread with cheese and more laughing cow.

Mind you, I did get gestational diabetes last time even with my incredibly healthy diet so maybe I won't this time with my carb based extravaganza.

It's not even that enjoyable as it's like being hungover, it's not like you really enjoy the food, it's more just to fend off queasiness.....

^ agree it's not that tasty is it! you're sort of stuffing it away in a vague belief that it will make you feel better, but it never really does!!

i LONG to have a proper appetite/feeling in my tummy/normal taste in my mouth etc., the whole experience of eating has definitely changed since i was upduffed! it definitely feels like i am hungover a lot of the time.

cakelover75 · 29/04/2012 16:51

Hello,

I'll join you in the eating crappy food. If I can get some Innocent smoothie (which counts as 2 portions) or even a glass of fresh orange juice or apple juice then it's a start.

Unlike you, I have put on almost half a stone already and am only 9 weeks!

Ozziegirly · 02/05/2012 07:19

Today I have hit a new low as all I have eaten are crumpets and cheese.

Sigh.

I am so glad it isn't just me! I was über healthy before I got preggars. I was ttc for a long time and had got into the habit of eating well every single day. Not any more!!! I feel like I've constantly got a low level hangover and all I seem to be eating is beige food-toast, potato croquettes, biscuits, and anything involving cheddar cheese Blush. I felt quite guilty but this thread has made me feel loads better! Smile

I have also done NO exercise apart from going horse riding which you're not meant to do!

elizaregina · 02/05/2012 10:42

same here - nothing with first child, vague morning sickness, nothing dramatic, this time, very sick - hungover - craving crisps and salty things, sausage rolls, anything like that!!! more savoury rubbish than sweet, still couldnt bring myself to eat macdonalds though! swtiched from brown granary to white bread! loads of crumpets etc...am praying in a few weeks i can try and get some balance back...

justlemonade · 02/05/2012 18:44

Pasta and sauce was all I ate for 12 weeks. Then it eased off and I decided to try some cake to supplement my restricted diet Grin

MummyLuce · 02/05/2012 19:22

I was the opposite! For the first 12 weeks I couldnt look at anything remotely junky and iced water, mangoes, oranges, tomatoes and salads were literally all I could eat...a fat lot of good it did me..by 18 weeks I was aneamic and have had to take strong supplements from the doctor. Im now 33 weeks and cant stop eating junk! danish pastry for breakfast, maccy d's for lunch, kitkat chunky for afternoon snack and chicken korma and chips are currently in the oven!
You miss out on so much fun stuff when you're pregnant (wine, friday/sat nights, sleep in general..) that I say eat what you like when you like..it will balance out over the course of your pregnancy, and your baby will take from you exactly what it needs! Take an all round vitamin supplement for pregnant women if you're concerned! x

Ozziegirly · 03/05/2012 04:49

I have used this thread as a suggestion box for beige salty based things to eat Grin

Potato croquettes you say....mmmmmm

I have forced down some grapes today, on top of two white baps with cheese and half a box of peppermint thins.

Ok, a whole box of peppermint thins. Blush
