I am posting for my friend who is as described. This will be her 4th child all quick vaginal births. The hospital want to admit her now until birth to see what happens and where she will be safe. They are not going to attempt turning the baby because the placenta and cord etc is low down where babys head should be if you like. Now my query is what are they waiting for ? My friend is really quite anxious etc about leaving her other 3 kids for any length of time but knows that babys well being is at stake here ...so is considering as a last resort paying for a private c section next week ...I must add she has been told that the baby is very unlikely to turn by herself now as it has ran out of room...according to scans baby is a good fair size...Thanks in advance for your thoughts and sorry for the ramblings.

Hello

It might be so that if she goes into labor they can give her an emergency c section if required as it sounds like the placenta is blocking the birth canal.

Normally she would have been scanned at 36 weeks and then had a c section booked. Has that not happened?

No but she has an appointment Monday morning so perhaps that will happen then...hopefully.
She is rather worried about going into labour and the whole thing sounds rather dangerous to me.
Thanks for your reply Frog.

My lower twin was resolutely transverse and I was admitted on the spot at 34 weeks, because they said that if I went into labour and dilated, the cord could slip out (prolapse) and then they only have minutes to get the baby out. I just had to sit tight and wait and then they did a section at 36 weeks.

Afterwards I spoke to a midwife friend who had attended a homebirth when the cord prolapsed and she had to transfer to hospital with the poor woman's bum in the air, and her hand right up, holding the cord in! Yikes! The baby was ok btw.

As for a private section, I'd be v surprised if they'd deliver her that early just because she had asked - private consultants are bound by the same ethical boundaries as NHS and I don't think they like to do them before 38 weeks for a singleton.

I feel for your friend, having to jiggle the family etc but it's worth it in the end.

Gosh BagofHolly thanks for your story...all that about prolapsing has us a little more freaked now...Understand what you are saying though.

Look at it this way - they wouldn't want to go to the expense of admitting someone to just sit there, with no good reason. Has your friend refused admission? Have they said what to do if she has any twinges? And a plan of getting to hospital VERY fast?
I don't want to worry you and apparently prolapse is rare but v v bad when it happens.

I'm sure viva/shag and other mw's will pop up with a far more experienced view.

My baby was transverse at 37 weeks and I was told they would prefer to wait to 39 weeks to get closer to full term...but then the placenta was never in a dangerous position. I WAS told to come straight in if I saw any bleeding...so yes, proximity to hospital and not going far from home was a priority.

She turned again before 40 weeks so I was approaching a normal birth, as I thought, only to find she was breech again at 41 weeks...do babies can turn, and turn again. (obviously at 41 weeks it was a CS for me).

Hope it works out fine for your friend...I am home today with DD & all very well despite the breech stress.

Hiya thanks yes she has so far refused admission but may go in monday, though she lives a mere stone throw from the hospital and is on strict bed rest at home. She has a good support network and we understand her desperation at not wanting to leave her kids.

Just an update incase anyone was interested. My friend spent the weekend at home on all fours gently rocking backwards and forwards whilst watching tv etc...Not all weekend but on and off...she was advised to try this method and it worked ! Yay a scan this morning has revealed that the baby has turned and the cord and placenta have moved up and everything is where it safely should be ready for a normal delivery...Fingers crossed it all stays this way.
