Waking with a bit of sick in mouth...what is it?

Sorry for the no-holds thread title.

I woke from dozing this morning with what tasted like a bit of sick in my mouth, but this happened 3 times over 40 mins as I was trying to get some extra winks. It was not pleasant!

Has anyone else had this, knows what causes it or what can be done to make sure it doesn't happen again?

Maybe it is sick and you were sick in your sleep?!

FluffyJawsOfDoom · 27/04/2012 17:00

Could it be acid reflux?

MandaHugNKiss · 27/04/2012 18:18

What is it? Well, it's disgusting, isn't it? Grin

I'm guessing it's reflux. You don't mention how many weeks you are?

Things that may help: propping yourself up a bit on pillows so that you're not flat and the acid/sick doesn't get the chance to leak out of your stomach.

If that's not working then acid reducing meds like ranitidine will probably do the trick. Dr should prescribe as it's generally considered safe in pregnancy.

I would also think acid reflux.
I had this really bad with DC2, survived on rennies for most of pregnancy Grin.
Agree with propping yourself up where possible.
I also found cutting back on spicy foods helped a bit.

Sorry...I'm just about 30 weeks, and have been fairly lucky so far. Heartburn contolled by milk and love hearts! This mornings turn if events was most unpleasant though, and I just wondered about how I should deal with it.
Thanks for taking the time to answer so far!

It's caused by the ph hormones relaxing things including your stomach valve. That plus baby squashing your stomach. I'd get a prescription from the drs for some indigestion meds if it carries on, at least then the meds will be free. Propping up on pillows also good idea.

DairyNips · 27/04/2012 23:13

pg hormones..

I agree that it's heartburn - different people get it in different ways. I don't get it in the 'heart' area, but instead it gives me a sore throat :(

Sounds like gaviscon before bed might be good because it sits some layer of gloopy stuff) on top of the stomach contents to step the reflux (I think the antacids only work for an hour or so until your body produces more acid). Anyway it's worth a try and you can get it on free prescription from GP - hoorah!

And more pillows like DairyNips says...

Yeah reflux is horrid. Gives me a burning sensation in the back of my throat. Good luck with finding something to stop it!!
