Was wondering what Mums carry about in their change bag?

Hi, I was thinking about change bags but can't decide if I need one as not sure what Mums actually carry in them?

I'm going to use reusable nappies and wipes, so I know I'll need them, a wet bag, a few muslins and maybe a change of clothes or two...

Is there anything obvious I haven't thought of?

I'm currently thinking I'll just through everything into my medium size Longchamp bag...

Everything I need for that trip but always:

nappies
wipes
nappy cream
change of baby clothes
fold up mat
scissors?!?
bibs
a few cartons of ready made formula
a couple of sachets of gaviscon
bottles (twins)
spare dummies
babies health record books
purse
phone
erm..make up ha haGrin

other random stuff gets added too today I also have an unopened letter (its probably a bill junk) and a teddy bear.

I was surmising to the hubby the other day why my neck has been hurty lately. Hmmm...

Advice...you will have loads in it get a MASSIVE bag the BIGGEST you can find!

minesapintofwine · 30/04/2012 00:10

oh I joined the boots club but never got the free bag even though I rang up on reflection though it def isnt big enough for me!

LadyBabsWalthamCuddles · 30/04/2012 00:36

EVERYTHING but it's also my handbag Grin

fairimum · 30/04/2012 09:57

as for change of clothes, i soon resorted to a couple of spare vests and baby grows rather than an outfit as easier to change them into and takes up less space!

Indith · 30/04/2012 10:04

I just have a handbag.

Purse
Keys
Muslin

are always in there. School run etc don't take nappies, nowhere to change him!

When out at groups etc add

1/2 nappies (cloth)
wet bag
wipes
a sleepsuit

I took ds2 to a baby group the other day, he is dc3 and I used to go to the same group all the time with my eldest, the lady who runs it was teasing me as I was there with just my handbag as with the PFB I used to take a massive bag with about 6 nappies, 2 or 3 changes of clothes and goodness knows what else besides!

DonkeyTeapot · 30/04/2012 10:51

I used to carry a minimum of three clean nappies - one to be peed all over before it's even fastened, one to be filled immediately, and one to actually wear for a while!

A clean vest and sleepsuit for when clothes are soaked during the aforementioned peeing before the nappy is on.

A few breast pads and sachet of lansinoh. Even if you don't need them, someone else might. I've given my spares to friends who've leaked through in the past.

Hi can anyone pls tell me what to pack in the hospital bag pls. It's been 3 yrs since I had my second and my memory is mush! Not due til November haven't had any scans to confirm yet.

StarshitTerrorise · 30/04/2012 17:53

I have ALWAYS wondered this. I just used to stick a couple of nappies, a small packet of wetwipes and a sleepsuit in my pocket to go out.

Changing bags look humungous and I just have never understood what they are FOR!

susiegrapevine · 01/05/2012 09:04

Hey to get the free boots bag you have to go to the shop they always have them on the shelves so pick one up but to get it free you also have to buy a pack of nappies! Obviously this is not a problem as you will need them lol! Even if you are using reusables its a good thing to have if you are going out for the day.

RetroMum1 · 01/05/2012 12:14

The kitchen sink!

I have 2 toddlers and a baby on the way so once they're born I will have

3 newborn nappies
2 toddler nappies
Wipes
Sudacrem
Nappy bags
3 bottles
Milk
Muslins
Spare vest
Spare baby grow
2 drink bottles
Snacks
hairbrush
Phone
Wallet
Keys
Suncream
Plasters
Sunglasses

Whatever toys they decide they no longer want to hold!

Hi, I will add a second (or third/fourth/etc) recommendation for the freebie black Boots bag, I got one with my first DC who will be five this year, and it is still going strong for newborn DC3 Grin

It ain't the prettiest, but it is the perfect size (eg. large-ish handbag sized), adaptable strap, changing mat included blah blah. Best of all, it's freeeeee and wipeable. As for what goes inside it? Everything at first; you will streamline what you take out with time and experience Smile I was down to one toddler nappy/snack/drink/wipes... Now with DC3 I have to take bottles/milk/sleepsuit/tidgy nappies too. I keep it as light as possible though, there is always enough of the other random crap left in my car as and when needed.

I'm a sad loser very attached to the old Boots bag, it's been through a lot being left on the car roof several times and rescued by various pedestrians when I drove off Grin

I seem to mostly have crumbs and sticks these days... but I guess that wasn't the question!

You sort of need everything as it's been said before and it really depends on the age, like other posters I find I have more now when DS is 2.5 than when he was a baby.

To start with you only really need the mat, nappies, nappy bag, wipes, change of clothes 1 or 2, dummies if you want, muslin plus all your stuff.

With DS I carry, 3 or 4 pairs of pants, wipes, changing mat in case of big accident, 1 pair of trousers, 1 pair of socks, 1 jumper, beaker, snacks, back up snacks and emergency bribe snacks he doesn't know about, kiddie alcohol wipes, arnica cream, plasters, suncream, sunglasses, hat, my purse, phone, lipbalm, snack and drinks for me too :o

At the other end of the cost spectrum from the Boots bag, here is some changing bag porn. Gimme gimme gimme Grin

Oh rich - great link! Those orange leather bags are the best I've seen - not obviously a change bag for a start!

just to say I'm on my second free boots bag, it's been redesigned slightly since DS1 and the outer pockets are more secure.

i am currently using my new one for newborn DS2. the pack of nappies i had to buy got used up in no time. his hobby appears to be pooping like big brother did. i can never decide if 10 poos a day is better than the poo explosion every few days..

anyway...

new baby:
nappies
wipes
bags
hand sanitiser
1 or 2 sets sleepsuit/vest
couple of soft bibs
couple of muslins
fold up change mat
bum cream

toddler:
nappies
wipes
bags
hand cleaner
muslins
bum cream
cup of water
bribes snacks

I still have a change of clothes for my 2yo toddler too, plus all the other bits listed above!! Blush Tbh, the 1 time I left it out, DD threw up EVERYWHERE & my parents had to take her into matalan in her vest & shoes to buy a new outfit.

I also carry calpol sachets & spoon, walking reins, tissues & my 'usual' handbag items. Loads of nappies too, as DD isn't always relied upon to not wee for Britain then do a massive poo...

I used to always have LOADS of breast pads & a feeding cover-up, as I leaked loads & wanted to feed wherever & whenever.

RetroMum1 · 02/05/2012 17:14

I have just purchased the sugarjack holly ready for DC3, it is big enough that it will fit the bits in for all 3 of mine. I also like that once your done with change bags you can take the middle out and it becomes a normal handbag.

forevergreek · 03/05/2012 13:53

Look up 'melo baby' changing mat. Is a mat that you can storage small pack of wipes/ a few nappys/ bags etc.. Is our key thing that goes everywhere. Can put in own bag or under buggy or in rucksack / car etc.. Means everything is together and whoever has the baby with them can just remember that.
I've never taken more than 2 nappies and one change of clothes out personally but we usually return home at lunchtime for naps as have baby and toddler and only single buggy.

MummyLuce · 03/05/2012 18:24

Changing bags are sooo expensive. Im going to use my medium longchamp for baby stuff and my tiny little cross body bag for my phone, keys, purse and kindle. sorted x
