Ibuprofen and Co-codamol in 2nd Trimester?

My doctor has just prescribed both of these for severe SPD pain. I'm 22 weeks.
I saw my doctor friend just afterwards and she said you should never take Ibuprofen in pregnancy. Dr. Google seems to agree.
The info on co-codamol seems a bit more ambiguous.
Does anyone have any experience of taking either of these in pregnancy?

I am VERY surprised about the ibuprofen. I was led to believe you shouldn't take this or aspirin at all.

Can you check with your MW, or have you asked the pharmacist to check the contrandications for both?

I think there have been other posts about the co-codamol so perhaps do a thread search. Also, they give you codeine during labour, so that might help.

Def check before taking them though. Have you been referred for physio? That would be a better bet than drugs I expect for SPD.

I had Ibuprofen at 24 weeks because my back was killing me in the middle of the night and that was the only pain relief at home (I am not in the UK so couldn't have gone to a pharmacy). I read in the little pamphlet that it was allowed if your doctor advices.

I have just had major surgery when pregnant (14 weeks) and was given codeine and paracetamol for post op pain. Codeine is regularly prescribed for more severe spd in later pregnancy. I have not been given any NSAIDS for example ibuprofen or aspirin, and no voltarol etc as the consultant explained these are not safe to use when pregnant.

By the way, too much codeine causes constipation which may have a lot to do with why it's best avoided if pregnant!

Surprised at Ibuprofen as I was told not to take it under any circumstances by Midwife but the consultant has told me to take codeine if I absolutely need to under same circumstances as you.

Thanks all - I have done a bit more googling/thread reading now and it seems that yes - the co-codamol is probably fine at this stage especially at the dose I have been given (8/500).

I am seeing a physio and doing everything I can but the pain is v bad at night and I'm finding it hard to sleep.

Everything I have read seems to say that the ibuprofen is a real no-no and I am a bit Confused as to why the doctor prescribed them.

ibuprofen should be fine in the second trimester, provided that you don't have a clotting problem or bleeding.

in other european countries ibuprofen in the second trimester is ok. I am always a bit Confused about how the advice differs from country to country.

the package leaflet only says that you should consult a dr or pharmacist in the first 6 months of pregnancy and not take it in the last trimester

I think there is relatively new research about ibuprofen and the risk of miscarriage in the first half of pregnancy, esp in first trimester. New things are being discovered all the time about drug safety in Pregnancy. I don't even want to think about the amount of strong painkillers and other drugs I've had in the last week! I trust my consultant though, so I would avoid the ibuprofen if I were you.
I think all painkillers apart from paracetamol are best avoided in last trimester. Your SPD is likely to get worse though, and I hear people have have good result from visiting chiropractor so that might be worth a try. I will be as soon as I feel first twinges!!

Don't wait until it hurts Ellen!!! I regularly see a chiropractor as I had a hip problem (partly inherited, partly from a fall I think) & would find my groin/hip grinding when I walked if I'd been sat still for a while. It's been better since I've seen the chiropractor regularly & changed my job!!

However, I do find that its more effective if you go regularly before the pain hits. I was scheduled an appointment before I knew I was pg, so saw him throughout & although I was uncomfortable, particularly at night, using a DreamGenii pillow & doing the stretches really helped & I didn't need pain killers. He also takes credit for my straight-forward 12hr from show to baby labour, but I'm not so sure!!! Wink

I'm only 10wks this time & very stiff already (lifting & carrying a 26lb 2yo can't help!!) but will see my chiropractor as regularly as I can in the hope it won't go any further. I totally recommend chiropractors. :)
