21wks and no movements yet - should I be worried?

I'm currently 21 + 4 and as yet I've not felt any movements or kicks from my baby. This is my second and with my ds I'm sure I was regularly feeling him from around 18wks. I know that this time the placenta is all in the front so maybe that?s affecting things as well. When I was scanned at 19 weeks all was ok and bb was moving well so. Anyway should I be concerned at lack of movement and when should I feel something?

Hi Boggler, I'm a little behind you at 19 weeks but I haven't felt anything yet and I also have a placenta sat at the front. I think that must provide quite a cushion between 'us' and the kicks. My MW told me the 'norm' is between 18 and 20 wks but can be a few weeks after. I'll put money on you feeling a swift kick before me!

Can't say for certain, only had 1 term pg with DD & only 10wks now, but I think the position of the placenta would be a big reason why you can't feel much yet. He might be kicking into space towards your back or if he's kicking forward, it might not be enough to get through the placenta.

I'm sure more knowledgeable Mums will be long soon.:)

I think if you have an anterior placenta that can definitely make movements much more difficult to feel. It's good you have had your scan and know that all is well. But if you are v concerned you could give your MW a call just to put your mind at ease.
Sorry not that helpful - someone will probably be along soon who has more experience/info.

HerrenatheHHHarridan · 26/04/2012 13:29

Short answer is no!

I didn't feel my first until 25 weeks due to awkwardly-placed anterior placenta. I felt my current one (second) at 19 weeks even though he's got an anterior placenta too (less inconveniently placed I presume)!

If I were you I'd be looking forward to next midwife appt when she gets the doppler out, but I would try not to worry - most likely your baby is perfectly fine :)

I had anterior placenta and I never felt anything. Really ever. DD was fine.

It was annoying when being told to do the kick count thing.

With my second I didn't have anterior placenta and felt a lot all the time so the difference is quite amazing.

I am 28+1 with anterior placenta and had the same worry as you, but I started feeling some movement around 24/25 weeks, even now I don't get really strong kicks etc yet MW says baby is fine and is moving away in there so it must be the position of the placenta.

Aworryingtrend · 26/04/2012 13:55

Hi sorry to hijack thread but please could I ask when and how you found out whether you have an anterior placenta?

HerrenatheHHHarridan · 26/04/2012 13:57

found out at 20-week scan - it's not a problem unless it's really low AFAIK.

Aworryingtrend · 26/04/2012 13:59

Thanks Herena. I'm only 14+6 so a while to go til i start feeling movements I guess!

HerrenatheHHHarridan · 26/04/2012 14:03

No probs. Just wait until you're at 35 weeks and the little darling is kicking hard just below your boobs!! Or even better, if s/he tries to tapdance on your cervix Confused

Boggler · 26/04/2012 14:46

Thanks for the advice, I have googled anterior placenta and it's common to feel less movement but even so I'd like to! If it wasn't for my expanding tum and sickness I could easily convince myself that I wasn't pregnant lol x

I have an anterior placenta. I felt the odd occasional movement from about 22 weeks, but didn't feel anything substantial until after 28 weeks. Funnily enough both the ultrasonographer and my MW said that I might not feel anything until 28 weeks, so obviously the baby was listening! I still have huge variation in amount of / strength of movement depending on which position the baby is in (32 weeks tomorrow). I found it very stressful because I also have a reasonably small bump (due to being tall apparently) and the two things people always ask about / comment on are movements and bump size. Today she has decided to lodge a limb in my ribs at the back however and I can definitely feel that...
