Is this just normal morning sickness?

Currently 6+1 with DC2. With DS I didn't have any morning sickness at all - couldn't even really tell I was pregnant until the bump appeared.

With this one, I've been feeling very tired and quite nauseous for about a week, but the past 3 days have been horrendous. I'm really struggling to keep anything down, have tried small sips / nibbles etc but sooner or later pretty much everything comes back up. It's better in the mornings, and I'm managing to keep breakfast down, but from about 11am it gets worse and worse. I'm often really hungry, while at the same time have no desire to eat, because the thought of eating (anything!) makes me feel sicker.

A couple of times I've been quite dizzy - probably dehydration or low blood sugar I reckon, so have started drinking gatorade this evening, which has stayed down so far.

So is this normal, and I just have to tough it out? And if aynone has any tips on how to keep stuff down, I'd be incredibly grateful.

See if you can get into docs they can give u anti sickness tablets. I'm afraid sounds normal I've had it in all 3 pregnancies luckily not as bad in this 1. Also I could only eat a little bit of rich tea biscuit before I got out of bed and sipped on 7up. Hope u don't have it for to long. And congratulations :)

Also forgot to add go armed with a urine sample at doctors as they can check it for ketones which is signs of dehydration x

oikopolis · 25/04/2012 23:49

OP if you suspect dehydration, leg it to the GP, you can get deathly ill from dehydration and baby can suffer too. insist on a drip if you have to, and get meds, there's no gold star for suffering!

it might be normal, but that doesn't mean you've got to go through it, vomming and not being able to keep things down is dangerous for your health.

Was like that with my first pregnancy for first 16 weeks and lost a lot of weight. Eventually I just persevered with eating as I knew my body needed food and if even a small bit stayed down that was good. Maybe try ice lollies for fluids and plain things like cream crackers. And of course ginger biscuits!

I think its only abnormal if it carries on well into the second trimester and beyond. Pregnancy is never normal is it? Go to the doc if its that bad you can't carry on like that especially with another child to look after

It's the hunger that is the problem. I'd advise keeping nibbling before you're feeling sick and even before you're feeling hungry. The sickness and hunger always co-incided for me - couldn't feel one without the other. Small amounts of food all day. Especially plain food, like someone recommended rich teas. And drink lots of water. Hang in there, hopefully it'll get better for you once you hit the second trimester...

mattysmum09 · 26/04/2012 10:05

ohhh its horrible isn't it? I'm not even BEING sick and i feel wretched so you must be feeling worse you poor thing. Weird thing is sometimes if i dont stay stil i feel better like when I'm doing something or i take little one to baby group and distract myself, but then its a vicious circle because when you feel rotten you dont want to do anything!

rudbekia · 26/04/2012 10:26

yup - was like this with my first. from about 7wks to 14wks I threw up like a trooper several times a day, felt like death, lost a load of weight and was generally miserable! Saw my GP in the end who prescribed me some tablets which I only took on the days that I worked....the rest of the time I lay on the sofa and felt grim. I did find ice lollies helped; as did toast and butter, mashed potato and plain pasta. You will get through it, just keep drinking. I was told even if you throw up after drinking, your body will have absorbed some of it x btw, I was fine once I hit 14wks and sailed through the rest of it....I'm sure it'll get better x

Another vote for seeing your doctor and getting anti-sickness tablets, they make all the difference. I was like you just before I was prescribed them, complete with the dizziness etc., and it sounds like you might possibly be dehydrated, which is when it gets a little more iffy. As the other posters have said try and nibble on plain food as often as you can to stave off some of the nausea and definitely drink something like Lucozade so you still get some calories and nutrients. But there are medications out there if you are happy to take them, and they can make a real difference. I was sick from 7w-24w and nauseous for the rest of my pg (not to scare you, most women do get better a lot earlier than that!) and it sucks, you have my sympathy. But if you are really struggling to eat and drink then it really is worth talking about medication rather than struggling through being so ill for weeks, especially if you have another DC to look after.

BellaCB · 26/04/2012 12:16

Oh, and as oikopolis says, there is no medal for suffering through morning sickness, losing weight and being perpetually on the verge of dehydration, not when there are safe anti-sickness drugs you can take!

Thanks all for your very helpful advice. Have made an appointment to see the doctor tomorrow, although so far today has been a little better, and have been managing to keep stuff down. Am working from home today, which is a lot less stressful - I wonder one of the things making me so nauseous was the constant smell of coffee / people wearing strong perfume in the office (have developed a REALLY strong aversion to both, together with an increased sense of smell - nice).

Anyway, thanks to all of you, and will get me to the docs tomorrow.

I was at the dr today, I told her my sickness was impacting my day to day stuff (in my case college, school run, dinner, sleep!) and she has given me some anti sickness tablets. Smile

Dropdeadfred · 26/04/2012 14:18

I was admitted to hospital at 6 weeks pg as I couldn't even keep a sip of water down. I was in a drip for a week... See your go and stress how bad it is.
