Acupuncture! I only discovered it in my last 3 weeks of pregnancy having spent the rest in agony. I was pain free for those 3...

Hi Mama2 I have had acupuncture for 15 yrs and wouldn't hesitate to use in pregnancy. Just try to get a recommendation and ideally someone with experience in this area. Can you get a referral now to your obstetric physio? I did last week (13 wks) she spent an hour with me. She assessed me and my pelvis was out, she adjusted it and now I'm exercising to strengthen the right muscles. I've got my belt at the ready, a DVD recommendation from her and will be getting my birth ball thing out again to do pelvic tilts etc. I'm not to wear heels and I've been asked to sleep in particular position to limit pressure on the hips (can you tell I'm on a mission?!) I was very glad to have the appointment I was going to wait until I had pain before going but glad I took my midwife's advice and saw her now.

Chiropractor. Make sure he/she is a member of the British Chiropractic Association and ideally find one that specialises in pregnant women.

Catsycat · 24/04/2012 16:01

Osteopathy! Saw her as soon as I got any twinges this time, as with previous 2 pgs I had PGP. She has completely kept the pain at bay (plus sorting my back when my 2 DDs spilt water all over the bathroom floor, which I slipped in - ouch!). The woman is absolutely fantastic. I only see her once a month, and she is well worth the money (£40 per session).

Where is she locAted?
Which one would be better to see?

Move your legs together. If you are going to get into a car, for example, sit in the seat, then lift your legs together into the car. When turning from one side to the other in bed, stick your knees together and move them over to the other side together.

If your SPD continues, research adequate birthing positions.

babbashouse · 24/04/2012 17:27

sedgieloo - what is the special sleeping position?! Do tell!

Catsycat · 24/04/2012 17:28

My osteopath is in Evesham, Worcs. Not sure if its a case of acupuncture, chiropractor or ostepath being best - I think it might be a case of personal preference, and seeing what works for you. I use osteopathy because it was what I tried first, and it worked really well for me iyswim.

BlingLoving · 24/04/2012 19:29

I'm with Catsy - I think it depends a lot on the practioner and how it works for you. I can recommend chiros in the broad South West London/Surrey area. or in the City there's one I know that is good.

BlingLoving · 24/04/2012 19:30

Also, try a hot pacl on your very lower back. I had an ice pack for certain areas and hot pack for others but can't remember exactly but I do remember the hot back at the bottom of my back. Helped a lot.

Advice re getting in and out of cars very good. I put myself back massively getting out of the car one day. Agonising. Embarassing too as I was in fact driving myself to a chiro appointment at the time...!

I have had it in all pregnancy but im onky around 5/6 weeks and ican feel the start of it, esp the end of the day.

Im in london

Where in London? I can offer recommendations for the City, Putney, Surrey/SW border.

sedgieloo · 25/04/2012 08:09

Re sleeping position, she gave me a print out and a picture I'll try to describe.

Lie on side.
Pillows under head
One thin pillow under bump
Body in a straight line
Three pillows in front of thigh
Take top leg (bottom one stays straight) move so the thigh at a right angle (ish) to underneath leg and rest knee and calf on these three pillows.

You can feel this take all the pressure off the hips, prior even at this early stage I was getting soreness 'inside' my hips on the side I was laying on.

I would rec osteo also because they will keep your hips aligned, if they are out like mine tend to be it is going to make everything grind and move about and hurt. Physio can do this also - if they are experienced in obstetrics, same really for osteo, mine is married to a midwife, sees all the pregnant women/kids, another in the practice I saw when he was away was clearly too scared to adjust my (heavily preg) body, so do get a recommendation and/or interview them on the phone first.

i have found antenatal yoga helpful.

BlingLoving · 26/04/2012 12:29

Try Putney Chiropractic. It's not too far from Twickenham and they have a number of chiros who specialise in pregnant women.
