Hello guys, have my dating scan tomorrow and it occurs to me that I don't know whether I need a full bladder? The letter doesn't mention it?

Any clues?

Pretty sure that you should. However for the 20 week scan it's the opposite.

blackteaplease · 19/04/2012 19:25

Yes. I went for a wee as i was nervous and the couldn't scan. Had to go and drink more and wait half an hour.

Char11 · 19/04/2012 19:25

When I went, my letter said I didn't need a full bladder, but don't think it has to be completely empty either.

My last DC i had to have an empty bladder for 12 week scan. But my frst two I had to have a full one. Hmm

For my 12 week scan I thought I had to have a full bladder. Drank loads of water and then was desperate to pee - the first thing the doc told me to do was to empty my bladder! I had an vaginal ultra sound and then a scan so perhaps that was the reason. Just checked the google and there seems to be lost of conflicting responses - go full, you can always empty if you need to.

MillyStar · 19/04/2012 19:28

Yes you do, mind you mine was so full she made me have a wee then she sent me to empty it completely! You don't have to go overboard just have a cup or 2 of water x

Hermionewastherealhero · 19/04/2012 19:29

Yes, they told me mine wasn't full enough!

susiegrapevine · 19/04/2012 19:31

My 1st dc I went with a full one cos they said to then the man tried to scan me and said it was no good and I would have to empty it! I protested and said I was told to come with a full one and he said yes this was fine and right as it is much easier to empty it if needs be than it is to fill it. Makes sense really.

AWomanCalledHorse · 19/04/2012 19:31

They told me No in the letter (Queen Marys hospital in Sidcup).

MillyStar · 19/04/2012 19:32

By the way take a bottle of water with you or wait till you get there as antenatal units have water machines for you, if you fill it at home you'll prob be in agony im the waiting room

Thefoxsbrush · 19/04/2012 19:34

Depends on hospital I think, my letter said in capital letters that I did not have to have a full bladder due to technology improvements

sparklekitty · 19/04/2012 19:35

My letter specifically said you don't need a full bladder. I wonder if it depends on the scanning machine each hospital has.

PlumBumMum · 19/04/2012 19:38

My bladder was too full and had a scary couple of mins when midwife couldn't find dc3, she was pushed away over to the side, you can't win!

Astr0naut · 19/04/2012 19:42

I had to have half a wee when I had my 12 week scan with ds because my bladder was so full it was painful when they scanned! Luckily my pelvic floor was in tip-top working order then.

We had to have full bladders with 20 wk scan too.

DrSeuss · 19/04/2012 19:42

My letter specified a pint of water an hour before. It stated that water was the only suitable drink and that alcohol was no good!

Chunkychicken · 20/04/2012 09:34

It occurs to me this might be too late, but I'd phone & check, as each hospital seems to do it differently. Mine def says full bladder.

Sastra · 20/04/2012 11:59

Thanks guys, I called and they said I didn't need a full bladder, just needed a bit in there :-)xx
