Newborn bedding - what more do we need?

I know there are loads of posts on this subject, and I have grasped the basics, but I am worried we haven't got enough and at the same time don't want to overpurchase (we can get more very easily in our town).

DC1 is due at the end of May. We'll be using a crib, and the pram has a carrycot. We have:

2 x crib/pram size fitted sheets
1 x swaddling blanket (the shaped one made by Gro)
1 x cellular blanket

To me it seems that this is cutting it pretty fine and leaves no room for leakage emergencies. But if we need more, what should we get? I don't want to be lumbered with a load of expensive stuff if it turns out the baby hates swaddling, for example. I have been told that Grobags are OK from birth now as long as the baby is at the minimum weight, so perhaps I should get one or two of those? Or more blankets? Arrgh.

I couldn't have done without my sleeping bags. As long as they are suitable size for you baby then I would recommend. You will need at least two, One for wearing, one for wash/emergancys.

You should maybe get a few more sheets. If baby is sick in bed, nappy leaks etc, then you could be changing them a fair amount. Always good to have a few more spare.

I would get a few more blankets to, for when you take baby out, or its a bit chillier.

Imo you can never have too much but you can be stuck with too little.

Could you maybe ask for a few blankets as gifts? I still use one that I got given. Ds is now 4, but its lovely and just the right size for a snuggle :)

I'd definitely recommend at least two more sheets, in case of sick or leaky nappy emergencies. We managed with two blankets to start with, although with a May baby if the weather is hot you might not need them much. You might find your baby isn't keen on grobags so maybe buy one (or even borrow one if you can?) and see how you get on.

I think you are cutting it a bit fine. I don't think you need any more swaddling blankets until you know if your DC likes being swaddled or not (mine hated it). I would get another pair of crib/pram sheets as you will always have one of those over the mattress of the crib & pram. You can get crib/pram sheets in supermarkets for about £5 so it wouldn't be a huge expense. We used to have one cellular blanket in the pram & one in the moses basket plus a spare but you may want to wait & see if you get given any blankets as presents. If you do need more, then you can pick them up easily & can always improvise.

If you don't want to get more sheets, then you can always put a muslin over the sheet &, if that gets poo or sick on it, just remove that & the sheet itself may still be OK.

Thats just reminded me!
I used to put a folded muslin underneath ds's head and tucked in to the sides. Used to catch the sick and saved me on washing :)

Yes, we did the folded muslin trick too, in the pram carrycot and Moses basket. Saved washing the whole sheet if there was just a little bick of sick or dribble.

Grobags are great and very safe as soon as your baby is big enough. We've also found them handy for establishing positive sleep associations. DS goes in the grobag at the beginning of his pre-bed routine and I think it helps him realise that its time to sleep.

Lots of people use pillowcases as fitted sheets for prams and cribs/moses baskets. I have loads of bedding (presents and things left over from DC1) but I wouldn't be adverse to using a pillowcase!
