Nursing clothes

Have you purchased any clothes in order to make life easier when bfeeding? I was thinking I might need to buy a few tops and someone told me you can get specific nursing clothes.

You can, but I didn't find them useful first time round. H&M and Mothercare amongst others stock them.

This time I've just bought a couple of wrap dresses which i can pull to one side and cheap boob tubes to wear under normal tops so I can pull my t-shirt up and not get a cold stomach whilst feeding DS. It also means I'm not fussed about flashing my hairy jelly belly mid feed.

I found some of the specific styles of bfing tops not very user friendly - H&M used to do (well they may still do them like this!) an top with a cross over section and a 'modesty' panel behind. The modesty panel had two small holes cut out where you poked your nipples though so the baby could feed. This meant when the baby finished a feed you were left wearing a peep hole top with your nipples sticking out. Not very nice!

Also Mothercare used to do a range of tops that had a panel the full length of the top (-ish!) that had the feeding holes in the sides by the waist of the garment - this meant you had all your back and sides out on display while you fed so it wasn't 'discrete' like the sticker on it said at all!

Try on the top/dress before buying (or have a good look at it) as you don't want a bfing top that leaves you exposed if you want to keep covered (not that you should cover up to bf of course but you may want to!).

The cheapest option is some vest tops with stretchy straps/neckline in a toning colour to a top with a loose or stretchy hem and pull down the vest & bra cup then lift top to latch baby on - sides and back and tummy are covered and top will fall down or can be pulled down as baby unlatches.

I found I could pretty much wear anything if I had a muslin with me, now I wear baggy tops and DD is big enough to cover the rest ;)

I wore anything that could have a boob whipped out of the top, usually vests or low-ish v necks, tucked a muslin under my bra strap so it draped over the top part of my boob, whipped them out and fed anywhere and everywhere! Although I'm not particularly well-endowed (although they were amazing just after having DS Grin ) which I do think makes it easier.

I've just bought a couple of plain black nursing vests (which have the same sort of let-down straps as nursing bras) and which I can wear under pretty much anything... I bought mine from La Redoute (about £13 each), but I think quite a few places sell them (although I struggled to find many very cheap/ plain ones online). The ones I got were fine, but the size came up quite big on me- I think they anticipated you'd be larger than normal after having the baby, and so added quite a bit extra to the size..

I mostly where my regular tops with a vest under.

Have a couple of feeding tops some are better than others.

I just bought some cheap vest tops to wear under my normal tops. Nice lng ones that I can tuck in so my flabby belly doesn't end up on display!

melliebobs · 18/04/2012 11:43

to b honest they are pricey, a faff and you don't really need them. A stash of good nursing bras yes ( i'm really leaky and even with pads go through 2 a day) then i just got loads of strappy tops to wear under my normal clothes. Lift hoody up, vest down with no exposure

I got a load of boob tubes from primark for £1 - still pregnant and using them as bump bands but plan to use them to stop my belly hanging out if I have to lift my top to bf

I'd second nursing vests - it means you don't need to wear a nursing bra but can just lift your top up and undo the clasp, stick baby on but without exposing all your tummy to the world. I was a lot happier when I found them :)
