internal thrush cream

Is it safe to use? I am 27 weeks pregnant and sent DH out to get me some external cream, but he has come back with an internal and external cream combi, which I have never used before. It's not a pessary, but has got some applicator thing with it.

It says on the back do not use when pregnant, but is that just them covering their backs? Should I just stick with the external cream? Tbh, I can't be bothered to make a GP appt for a bit of thrush.

I suffered thrush 3 times in first 4 months of pregnancy. Third time I DID see my doc. The advice he gave me was that the pessary is the only internal option suitable. He also said the external alone is pretty useless. Luckily it hasn't reoccurred.

Good luck

I had thrush recently - I'd usually take the tablet, but as we're currently TTC I checked with the dr and they recommended I use the pessary and external cream. Maybe check with NHS direct if you want to be sure?

What is the difference between the pessary and the internal cream? I might check with NHS direct, thank you.

I can totally understand why he external cream alone would not work, but it usually works for me in my non-pregnant state. Tbh, it isn't something I suffer with a great deal, so not 100% about all the different creams/ pessaries/ tablets etc.

I was told to use the pessary at 36+5 by doctor. My waters broke at 37-had to be induced after 3 days. Midwives said no link but I am not sure.

The pessary is a single 'dose' that you apply with an applicator, I would imagine its easier to do than the internal cream.

Is the cream clotrimazole? If so its the same as the pessary.

whenskiesaregrey · 16/04/2012 21:13

The internal cream is 5g, containing 500mg of 10% clotrimazole. External cream is 2% clotrimazole.

It's in a pre-filled applicator.

Hmm, pessary says 2% but 'double strength', so not sure, but think there's probably not much difference between them.

Thanks for your help. I told DH don't get me any tablets or pessaries, so he got me this cream, and now it seems he would have been better off getting me the pessary!

With the pessary and internal creams it's usually the applicator they have issues with (as this is adding an unnessecery, foreign object to your vagina). If you can get it in there with your fingers they're usually happier.

The tablet is a definite no-no unless prescribed by a consultant. I had an 8wk patch of thrush late 1st and into 2nd trimester and 3 rounds of pessary and external creme did it.

Remember, if you're in the UK you get you MATEX card and will get all this stuff free if you visit a prescribing MW/GP/hospital.

Also, if you do use the pessary it's TOTALLY NORMAL to have a rush of fluid usually the morning after you've inserted the pessary (mine was enough to soak my pants, and trouser-crotch), mine was accompanies by some white chalkish stuff. But, if worried, always get any fluid-rush checked.

It might be worth making a drs appt as when I had it, they took swabs to check it def. was thrush and not a bacterial infection/whatever...

Meanwhile eating (and applying externally only if it takes your fancy) natural, unflavoured yogs, only using gynea tested body washes (like femfresh) and no deoderising products, drinking plenty of water, wearing cotton pants, hot-washing your pants in non-bio (don'tuse fabric conditioner either), ironing the gussets (if you have the patience) and going comando or at least avoiding clingy stuff in that reigon, when you can, will all help.

Thanks Oeisha I'll give the internal cream a go. I think my cause is wearing pantyliners everyday

It's a diffiuclt one. I had fairly heavy discharge anyway during pg, but found cotton pants with a thicker gusset like these (not sexy, but it worked) were the answer, and changing them twice a day. You can have them delivered to your local Waitrose for free if it's easier. They wear big, so if you're a 14 get a 12. I found the 14s lasted me through late pregnancy and through the double-maternity padding phase post-partem. In fact, I'm still wearing them as they're so comfy, even though they're too big (I lost 2stone in pregnancy - Snufflix is 12wks today!).
