Fewer movements - can anyone reassure me?

Hi,

I am 27 weeks and for the last couple of weeks, baby's movements have been getting really strong and more frequent. Yesterday I had a pretty strenuous day - lots of working and standing around, to the point where today my lower back is killing me today!!
Anyway, I didn't feel him move much yesterday during the day which didn't surprise me as I was on the move so much, but then he was much quieter at night and today I've felt some movements but they have been much smaller than I was getting - more like the flutterings I had a few weeks back than the jabs I've been having recently.

Should I be worried? Or could it be that he's moved into a different position so I'm not feeling things as strongly?

Hope someone out there can reassure me...

Thanks, C x

Hello - I'm at 30 weeks and had very similar worries a few days ago. Bump had been trying to ram his way out through my stomach as far I as I could tell and then had a period of about 3 or 4 days where, although I could still feel him moving about, it was a lot less than it had been. As with you, the slow down coincided with a change in the amount I was moving about. Today and yesterday he is back to fly-kicking me in the bladder.

I'm not an expert but I would suggest you keep an eye on it and if you are still feeling concerned by the end of tomorrow, give your midwife a ring. It will all be entirely fine but it might put your mind at rest to speak to someone about it.

Hope that helps a bit.

Char11 · 16/04/2012 20:30

Thanks Coops, that does make me feel better. You're right, I will keep an eye on it and see how it goes tomorrow. I just had a glass of very cold water and he moved pretty much straight away, but again just a but more timidly than usual!
But hopefully the fact that he reacted so quickly is a good sign - don't think I'll torture him with any more just yet! Smile

I had the same thing around 26 weeks.

Try drinking a cold sugary drink or orange juice and Lying on your left side this is the advice my midwife gave me. When this didn't work & I'd felt little movement in 3 days ended up being sent for a trace. All was fine in the end.

Err on the side of caution. It's what their there for, and you can't be too cautious. Call your midwife, you should have an out of hours number too if need be. If the cold drink trick doesn't work I'd seek
Some advise x

Any change in movements should be checked out. Contact your midwife and ask for baby's wellbeing to be checked.

meditrina · 16/04/2012 20:45

Count the Kicks

N.I.C.E. Guidelines say: ?Any changes in fetal movements should be reported to a midwife?.

Char11 · 16/04/2012 21:23

Thanks all, I will give her a ring tomorrow, just to be on the safe side.

call NOW! I don't want to alarm you and it is highly likely that your baby is just having a restful period but any change in movements should be checked out ASAP.

I have seen too many posts from women who left it and then it was too late.

Please call your MW. No one will think that you are time wasting. I had reduced movements in my pregnancy, when I called they told me to go straight in. Everything was fine and as soon as I got there she started wriggling (typical) but the MWs were lovely and said that I was right to go in. They would rather they monitored for nothing than the alternative.

bonzo77 · 16/04/2012 21:36

Go to labour ward now. Do not wait till morning. DS is alive because I went in after just a couple of hours of reduce movement. My friend's daughter is not. May be she could have been. Sad

FairyPenguin · 16/04/2012 21:41

Go now. I had to go in twice for reduced movements and the midwife told me off so much for leaving it till the morning. She told me that if there had been anything seriously wrong, it would have been too late. I ended up being induced (was already 40 weeks at the time).

nearlymumofone · 17/04/2012 10:56

Go in for reduced movements to reassure yourself and be on the safe side. However I had lots of similar periods of reduced movement when pg with ds and everything was always fine.

RobinSparkles · 17/04/2012 15:46

How are you today OP?

Char11 · 17/04/2012 17:12

Went to the doctors this morning (I didn't read the last few posts until I got up today!) - anyway, all is fine, heartbeat good and strong, and in fact all movements went back to normal overnight and this morning. Big relief, but thanks for all the advice, if it happens again I will definitely call straight away.

On the down side, my lower back is much worse today so I am struggling with that, couldn't get in the car today, or put my own socks on - but will put up with it as long as little one is ok Smile. Dr did give me co-codamol to take but I'm only going to take it if I get really really desperate. He said it might make baby a little sleepy and I don't think I want any more worries about him not moving enough!
Anyone else taken it while pg?

Glad that all is well Char :)

Sorry to hear that you've been in pain though! The only pain killer I took in pregnancy was paracetamol for headache so I have no advice about co-coda mol. I suppose that at least if the baby goes quiet after taking it, you will know the reason why.

I hope I didn't scare you too much with my previous post! Hope the rest of your pregnancy is uneventful :)

RobinSparkles · 18/04/2012 18:52

I think that a friend took co-codamol in her pregnancy with no ill effects.

ContinentalKat · 18/04/2012 19:16

Try and sort out your movement issues with an osteopath before you take co-codamol! I had my 2 dcs in Europe and my mind always boggles at what medicines are casually prescribed during pregnancy & labour over here... Codeine is an opioid and passed on to baby through the placenta ffs!

ContinentalKat · 18/04/2012 19:21

By movement I mean your lower back, not your baby's movements, obviously. Well done for having that checked out quickly.

Char11 · 18/04/2012 19:33

Thanks Robin and Kat,
I do have an osteopath but unfortunately he's on holiday this week - typical!!
Will hopefully see him next week though

I took 1 tablet twice yesterday but haven't had any since, and am feeling a wee bit better - and baby has been moving as normal. Went for a swim which helped alot so I think I'm just gonna try and get through.
It was a bit weird at the doctors - I said, 'so, apart from making him sleepy there's no other risk to the baby?', his response 'I don't think so' - not really that reassuring!! Anyway, it still hurts but at least today I can get in a car so seems to be on the mend.

Thanks for all the advice and support.

Smile

Hi

Can I ask, from when should I feel baby everyday?
I am nearly 21 weeks and feel flutters pretty much everyday, is this it now should I feel baby everyday or could I still have days where I don't?

Thanks

Char11 · 18/04/2012 20:20

To be honest, I don't really know mumma, when I first started feeling movement regularly I had occasional days when I didn't feel much (like once a week maybe) but the last 2 or 3 weeks I feel something every day. But I have no idea about what is normal - its all new to me!! Confused
Maybe someone else will come along who knows a bit more.
