Maternity pants/knickers, what are they and do I need them?

I mean they are pants, obviously! I mean what is the difference between these and ordinary pants? Can I just buy normal pants in bigger sizes as I get bigger or is there something special about these?

TIA

You dont need special ones. I'd advise against disposable ones too. I'd get normal pants in bigger sizes but not too big.

I got M&S value range black granny pants. I'd normally buy their 10-12 and I got size 16 thinking I was/ would be massive post birth but they werent tight enough and so didnt hold the pad in palce well enough.

No just get big comfy pants, I got m&s but just one size up

Bunbaker · 16/04/2012 16:42

I just wore my normal ones. Being pregnant didn't make any difference because they weren't belly buster big pants anyway.

sparklybec · 16/04/2012 16:43

I think they're just cut low at the front aren't they? I've not felt like I needed to buy special knickers - I wear minis anyway and they sit under the bump fine, just whatever I was wearing before I was pregnant!

I bought a pack of 5 maternity pants from Mothercare in my usual size but they are the same shape as normal non-bellywarmer style pants but twice the price. I would stick to regular ones. These do seem like decent quality though and unlikely to fall apart as quickly as the cheapo Primark multipack pants I usually get.

lilbreeze · 16/04/2012 16:47

I've just worn my usual knickers the whole time - they're fairly low cut anyway so sit comfortably under my bump. If you usually wear waist-high granny ones you might need to buy some new ones though Grin

I just bought a few cheap packs of cotton bikini shaped knickers in a size up from my usual.
Usually your hips widen in pregnancy even if you don't put on any weight, so most of us will need to size up unlike lucky Bunbaker

Aworryingtrend · 16/04/2012 16:47

Thanks, I will stick to normal ones and save the cash!

I wish Mumsnet had existed during my first pregnancy 13 years ago; I remember splashing out a shocking amount on 'under-the-bump' knickers from Mothercare, I was on minimum wage and could have better spent the money on cake!

whattodoo · 16/04/2012 16:52

No knicker has ever beaten the comfort of my mothercare maternity thongs.

But I bought a couple of packs of tesco's big pants for the post-birth bit. Too embarassingly grannyish to hang on the washing line but they were so cheap I just chucked them away.

Bunbaker · 16/04/2012 16:54

Not luck. My knickers weren't high waisted so they sat under the bump, plus they had a lot of stretch in them. I have found out the hard way that cheap knickers are a waste of money and buy them from M & S.

ElephantsAreMadeOfElements · 16/04/2012 17:00

If you want under-the-bump your ordinary knickers will be just fine. You may want big granny knickers for after the birth, though, a size or so bigger than normal (presupposing that your ordinary knickers aren't big granny knickers anyway).

I have also splashed out on around 5 'maternity vests' only to discover that cheap ones (about £2 in Primark for example) a size up serve the same purpose and probably will do until very late pregnancy. Having said that, the New Look £3.99 ones are a bargain and have the side 'ruching' for a bigger bump!

Sorry to change the subject but have spent so much money on maternity clothes the past few months!
