Big beginner question coming up....
I did a shop in ASDA this week and bulk bought some "new baby" nappies. But when I got home, realised they are size 2, to fit 6-13 lbs. The size 1 are actually the newborn ones and fit 4-11 lbs. Assuming baby is a "normal" weight, will it be ok in the size 2 I've bought or should I get some size 1 - if so, how many would you suggest to get going as presumably they outgrow them quickly?

Can you tell I haven't done this before....?!

Buy one small packet of the smaller size. I bet he/she'll be ready for the size 2 ones by the time you finish the packet!

Nappies are a nightmare aren't they?

I tried size 2 when DD was 2 weeks old, but even though she was in the weight category it leaked through down to her leg because they didn't fit because they were still big.

We are still using newborn and DD is a month old now, I would recommend them unless your having a particularly big baby (I was told I would which is why we didn't have many newborn).

You can get Just4Bums which are on the Kiddicare website where you order months worth for £20, if you don't use any packets then you can send them back for exchange for bigger/refund. They are good as well.

Congratulations and good luck btw Smile

It's handy to have a bulk selection of the "next size up" nappies, as babies do eventually grow into them. But so much will depend on the size (and shape!) of your LO when they arrive you might want to get a pack or two of the smaller size too. If you have too many, the supermarkets are usually happy to swap over unopened packs for the appropriate size. I bought loads of size 1s in an offer and opened the first pack just as DS announced he was too big for them by doing a leaky poo all over my MIL. Sainsbo's were most obliging

ShoeJunkie · 16/04/2012 15:00

DS was only in size 1 for a few weeks. He was 8lb 6oz but very long and the size ones just didn't fit properly. We're about to try reusables now though!

TruthSweet · 16/04/2012 15:05

Mine have been in size 1 for as long as possible (and also size 2 for as long as we could manage) as the newborn nappies deal with bf baby poo so much better than the active/stay dry kind that start at size 3.

Don't forget as you go up in size the no. of nappies in a pack goes down but the price stays the same so there is no advantage in putting baby in a bigger size until they actually outgrow a size.

TeWihara · 16/04/2012 15:32

Very true Truth, DS is 4months old and well out of the weight range for size 2 nappies but still easily fits them. They are cheaper too. Size one's are even cheaper, so I'd definately buy and use them for as long as possible!

It is very hard to gauge how much to buy in advance when you don't know how a big a baby they're going to be though...

blushingmare · 16/04/2012 17:45

Thanks all! And this might be a how long is a piece of string type question, but how many nappies would expect to get through a day in the first weeks?

about 10 is a good guide.

My son is 9kg and wears size 5 + junior nappies, although he would/should fit into a much smaller nappy, i feel the 5's certainly fit him better across his bottom and higher up his back and keep everything in, if u see what i mean, lol. We used t buy from asda n only bought branded nappies, but we found that huggies, even wen he was 7kg they just weren't protective enough and we found pampers also not t be very good for the number of hours he sleeps.

The best nappies we've found are from Aldi, there £5 for a pack of 48 and i love them, they keep it all contained n he no longer has nappy rash, he can still move easily enough in them. I certainly would recommend Aldi nappies t anyone :-)

TruthSweet · 16/04/2012 21:54

nicki - my 12.8kg/87cm 2.6y wears size 4 Sainsbury's eco nappies (has eczema and they don't disintegrate as badly with her cream as some other brands do). Even then I possibly could go down to a 3 but that might be pushing it and I've never had any of my DDs in a size bigger than 4+ even when nearly 3y and potty training/night time.

I wonder if needing bigger nappies is a boy 'thing'?

Chubfuddler · 16/04/2012 21:57

My nine month old is in sainsburys Eco size 4 + Blush. She wees a lot and weighs about 24 pounds.

TruthSweet · 16/04/2012 22:06

Chub - DD3 has a good couple of inches of waist band left before we'd need to move her up AND I turn the waist band down to minimise contact with her skin (plus it helps keep the cream off the binding so the nappy doesn't fall apart while she's wearing it Blush!). She must be a mini thing! Admittedly she still fits into a 3-6m skirt with fitted knickers....Shock

TeWihara · 16/04/2012 22:21

My DD shot up the nappy sizes or they leaked horribly around the legs, I think she just wasn't quite standard 'baby' bum/leg shape? DS is fine, as I said up there in nappies much smaller than his weight range.

I have no explanation.

Chubfuddler · 16/04/2012 22:23

Dd had lgs like lamb shanks. They are huge.

TruthSweet · 16/04/2012 22:26

DD3 has diddy legs - as do DD1 & DD2. They can share leggings - I have some pairs that DD1 wears as cycling shorts (she's a tall 6y), DD2 wears as clam diggers (she's a tall 4y) and DD3 wears as normal leggings. They are 9-12m!!

melliebobs · 17/04/2012 09:26

It really does depend on the make of the nappy. Dd was 7lb13 wen she was born & size one Huggies were perfect. But size one Pampers we're too big lengthways and newborn from Boots were too wide even though they all covered her weight

I'd take a couple of a few brands till u find what fits
